Not much, I'll have a good drink maybe once or twice a month at a push.

Hangovers are my biggest deterrent and I don't see the point of having a couple - I drink to get drunk.
I am the same. If I go out, I'll have a few, but I am a complete lightweight. I don't drink at home though, and am not a beer fan.

Your comments about beer bottles reminds me..

In the months leading up to me giving up booze, I discovered real ales and speciality beers (nice!) which tend to come in small glass bottles. Our glass recycling had it's own small tub which you put out next to the paper/cans sulo bin. Seeing how many glass beer bottles had accumulated every 2 weeks was a real eye-opener. Perviously, the cans would get burried under the newspapers and wrappers in the other bin and you wouldnt see them.
Somewhat similarly, since I started brewing my own beer, and making my own ciders, my consumption has gone down.

Once I started saving the bottles and reusing them, it was quite eye opening seeing how fast they built up at the side of the sink.

I also appreciate the drink more after the effort that has gone into making it!

Strange when we popped back to the old Uni bars we frequented it was deadly quiet. Appears kids these days drink far less or have less £ to do so.
I think both are true here. I started boozing in the early 2000's, Friday and Saturday nights in town were packed, the streets were full, the club's were full, the pubs were overflowing with late teens early twenties folk. The council closed the roads on a Friday and Saturday night to reduce the risk of people getting run over.

Now, even a busy night seems dead. The age of drinkers seems to have gone up, the drinking holes 'more refined', and more eating places.

True to say that some younger friends of mine struggle to see the same attraction of alcohol as previous generations. Many seem to just enjoy socialising, TV, going for a meal etc - without the need for significant drinking. They don't generally bother with the traditional pubs as much as a few years ago.

I think a lot of us grew up in pubs, when you could still smoke, and I think thats a huge difference to todays pub goers.....

What got me lower, was learning how delicate the Liver is to scarring. It is irreparable, and plenty of examples of folk in their 50s falling prey, eg Sean Hughes.

Suddenly seemed not worth it to binge, and now try and drink the French way
“Binge drinking” was something the yuppie era seem to think they invented. They even named it thus, because they had discovered drinking loads of booze in a short time, and none of us old farts had ever done that before.......

Hanging around with drunk people is one very good inspiration to give up drinking oneself.

Are you drunk when you post on here, generally? Just as it would explain EVERYTHING...

You're obviously not making it well enough wink

My consumption has gone up as I can now make what I want for pennies and there is always some in the house. Before If it got to 9 or 10 (PM!) and I fancied one or two I would be less inclined as I CBA to go to the shops or they were shut.

Well over 100 units a week, and have been doing so for about 20 years. I had a LFT about 3 months ago and no problems at all with it - I seem to have a Shane MacGowan liver. I do have a couple of nights off a week though - Sunday in particular as Mondays are bad enough already without starting them on a hangover!
And yet I have a friend who drank about 40 units a week, and was warned that his liver was inflamed and he needed to cut down drastically, to 10 units a week.
I assume it is genetic - my father and grandfather were both big drinkers, not hammered all the time but just keeping a buzz on all day, from 9am to midnight - and my grandfather was a surgeon! He lived until he was 91...

I never really thought about my consumption before I saw this thread. I always considered it as fairly steady but nothing serious. I work offshore, so have 2 weeks out of 6 completely drink free as a detox. During the 4 weeks home I rarely go out, so just drinking in the house/garden. Also every day is the same when home, so all follow the same pattern.

Sun - Mon: 1 or 2 bottles of beer whilst preparing lunch. 1 or 2 good glasses of wine with lunch. 1 bottle of beer prior to dinner. 1 or 2 good glasses of wine with dinner. In the hot summer months there is always at least 1 large g&t per day in the mix and more thirst quenching beers.

So in a normal week at home it is about 60 units a week heading probably north of 80 in the hot summer months.

Good grief this has been a sobering post and it is soon lunch time.......

My wife weighs exactly half my body weight and drinks the same quantity as me when we go out, with no ill effects.

Her father is an ex professional rugby player and even north of seventy he eats like a horse and drinks alcohol every day, whilst remaining athletic looking and slim.

I cannot help but believe genetics play a big part in ones ability to metabolise alcohol.

Ex armed forces here, massive drink culture.
In the forces you’d drink pretty much every night and all weekend when you could.
Gradually, after leaving the forces , I got that down to weekends only. Still too much. Knocked down to either Friday of a Saturday night. With still a quite high tolerance level, I’ve decided that’s too much still ( could easily put away 10 pints and a bit more of strong beer/lager)
Now I’ve knocked it on the head completely.
Tired of the hangover and feeling like st for a couple of days.
I’m not even having the odd one or two, that’s because it won’t be, they will turn into probably 10. So what’s best for me at the moment is none.
