Well I had another night of about 4 hours sleep if I'm lucky last night. I hope this passes soon, but funnily enough, I actually feel more alert than I did when I was drinking.

One funny thing I've noticed, which is probably withdrawal, is I am very, very, very thirsty at the moment. I've googled this and apparently its quite normal once you stop, and is supposed to pass.

Friday today. No drink for me tonight, and it will be first time in living memory I haven't had a drink on a Friday hehe (ok maybe not when i was a baby / child!)

I'm already planning my strategy for my day in York for my mates birthday tomorrow. I know that it will be unwise to try and drink like I normally would on such an outing so I'm planning to have regular soft drink breaks to try and lessen the blow - I absolutely love lemonade and lime so I'll go for the diet option between pints.

Hopefully on Sunday I won't be dying but I'll be getting back on the wagon regardless.

I haven't got an awful lot planned this month so I could have a sustained dry period quite easily if I so wished, and that is the plan. I think it's helping me to have a goal (beach body by the summer!).

I hope you don't mind my rambling updates, but this is a big deal for me and it helps to talk about it smile Even my work colleagues seem interested in how I get on as I'm well known for being a massive piss-head.

By all means ramble away !

I think there's a number of people watching how you get on, if only to see if 'a massive piss-head' can actually achieve what must have seemed fairly impossible not very long ago.

I guess the body needs a lot of fluid (plain water) while it adjusts. As long as you gradually start to feel better overall it must be well worth a bit of determined effort to get over these early-day issues.

Congratulations on the progress so far. bounce

Unfortunately moderation isn't something some folk can stick to. I would always suggest abstinence as it's much easier to not drink at all, than try and drink in moderation. Have one beer and it'll weaken any resolve not to have another.
Moderation is so difficult
Obsession - everyone has it on something

Then start later. We held off until 10 the other night (up from 9pm!) before buckling and having a drop before we went to bed.
It would have been a different story if we'd started at 7....

Well done! I must admit, it does feel weird not to be drinking on a weekend, but that was always going to be the case. Thank goodness for distractions!

I honestly cannot remember when I last did a no drink Friday night. Likely 12 months ago.

Now the challenge of 6N and Wales playing to face tomorrow.. one day at a time.

Oh and it’s not not drinking due to nothing in the house no easily have 80+ beers and all the other stuff. Temptation here and denied it.

Good work guys.

I turned down pub with colleagues tonight, to come back and look after my daughter whose been off school with infection.

Have 12 good beers in cupboards I could have started but not interested. I am convinced having alcohol in the Flat, and not touching it for 30 days, hardens one’s resolve - knowing you can reach for the wine, but not bothering is liberating from obsessive/addictive patterns.

Had tap water and got call from a friend once my daughter was asleep. First 60 minute phone call I’ve had in 20 years, and Best Friday night in in months - how sad ha ha.

And another paranoia-free, depression-free, non-nausea Saturday morning in 8 hours.

Well jealous. My sleep pattern is screwed at the moment.

I'm now in the pub nearly finished first pint. God knows how today is going to end lol. Wish me luck hehe

Funny old weekend. Good on Friday. Then Saturday was a mammoth 14 hour drinking session. Oddly enough though, I wasn't that badly hungover yesterday, which I wasn't expecting given I'd not drank for 5 days. And yesterday, I was back on the wagon. Didn't have any drink, and I'll be honest, I didn't dread today anywhere near as much as I normally dread a Monday.

I've lost 3lbs this week, and a few have commented saying I look better already (less skin redness, just generally more alert and not as miserable hehe). So onwards with another week. I don't have anything major planned for the coming weekend so although I may allow myself a couple of drinks, I wont be going daft and I definitely intend to shelve the traditional Sunday drinks.

Last week was an 'average' week I would say, sometimes I drink a lot more, others a little less....

Monday - 3 very large home measure G&Ts
Tuesday - 1 large whiskey
Wednesday - 1 pint Lager
Thursday - 1/2 bottle red wine
Friday - 3 pints lager, 2 bottles (330ml) Leffe, 4 or 5 large whiskeys
Saturday - 5 pints lager, 2 bottles (330ml) Leffe, 1/2 bottle red wine, 4 large whiskeys
Sunday - 9 pints Guiness, large glass white wine

So that's what, about 90 units? Fully able to function and do what I need to do the next morning. Trouble is, the drinking during the week doesn't even feel like a lot, because I wouldn't be drunk and I can justify that I'm not silly on school nights - but it all adds to the total.

Definitely need to cut down me thinks frown

It is funny isn't it...?

When I was in my 20's I used to drink to get drunk. I loved being drunk.

That 'phase' probably lasted 5 years or so.

Since then, I reckon I probably consume about 3-4 units of alcohol a year.

Hardly drink at all . I have a house full of beer/wine/spirits for friends and family when they visit.

But I would much rather have a cup of tea. lol

Since we've assured posters that we don't want to be judgemental, I'm not sure whether to go 'WOW' or 'OUCH'

These are the ones I can see.

Easy way for women to stop drinking.

The illustrated Easy way to stop drinking.

The Easy way to control alcohol

Stop drinking now.

Advice appreciated.

Haven't read the others so perhaps they're ten times better, but Easy Way to Control Alcohol has worked for me.

To be fair, My consumption was at least 100 units a week until about a week ago!

Sounds bad, but its easily done. Just one bottle of wine a night and you're knocking on 70 units. Chuck a weekend into the mix when you may, for example, have 2 bottles on those nights, and there's 100 units straight away.

I must admit I consider myself quite lucky in that when I want to stop I can do - last year I did dry January (and then February just because) and can easily just not drink when I put my mind to it. The problem is, I enjoy it- I would generally rather have a scotch instead of a desert as it's more of a 'treat' to me. I don't feel addicted or dependent - although maybe that's the first sign?!

So I stayed dry from Monday to Sat.

Sat I had 7 500ml mix of Cidar a and beers
Sunday I had a very gentle 4 500ml of ale.

To me that combined total is hugely down on my usual consumption. Normally those 3 days.... well could be 40 500ml drinks so I did 10.

Did I feel that I missed out? Nope.
However I did watch the rugby without any mates round —- has they been round well we’d likely be 7 beers before KO...

This week well I’m aiming for he Dry Mon to Sat ie dry Friday night but then also go for a dry Sunday. Drink on Sat for sure and let’s try to keep the total to a max of 7. If so over 2 weekends I’d have 18 500ml drinks vs 80+ 500ml drinks. Save a fair amount to boot in £ and surely all else being equal lose some weight.

Certainly plenty of variety, although I think you need some Cider and Vodka in there too. Maybe some cocktails?
