Considering you can barely ever get on any of the weight/resistance stuff at my gym due to over subscription and groups of mates hogging everything....I’m considering investing a couple of years worth of membership in something to use at home instead.
I have a small amount of space in the garage and was wondering if there’s a good ‘multi gym’ type bit of kit that doesn’t cost a kidney but would give me a good upper body workout that I can do at home in addition to cardio at the work gym/outside.
I wouldn't spend any money on a multi gym. I have a small amount of space in the garage and was wondering if there’s a good ‘multi gym’ type bit of kit that doesn’t cost a kidney but would give me a good upper body workout that I can do at home in addition to cardio at the work gym/outside.
Free, unstable weights and your own body will do for now.
At your stage, I would invest in the Convict Conditioning and/or "You are your own gym" calisthenics books.
I'd also buy/make a couple of sandbags and look up exercises.
Later, a 16kg kettlebell(and some instruction on how to use it safely), a chin up bar, a TRX type suspension trainer, a sledgehammer and maybe some dumbells. A Barbell later, but you really need some safety kit for using it solo.
Learn how to use the above kit properly, work hard and you will be doing well.

As for going to a more suitable gym, unfortunately I’m very limited where I am, and due to other constraints it’s pointless me joining a gym where I have 30 mins travel each way, would rather spend that hour doing stuff at home hence thinking about sacking off the gym and spending a couple of years of ‘gym money’ on some kit for the garage.

If you've got a brick wall you can bolt stuff to, why not get a pull-up/dip bar set. Should do for the majority of upper body work and you can supplement with resistance bands and kettlebells.I have a small amount of space in the garage and was wondering if there’s a good ‘multi gym’ type bit of kit that doesn’t cost a kidney but would give me a good upper body workout that I can do at home in addition to cardio at the work gym/outside.
My yoga session yesterday marked the end of 2019 in the gym for me. It has been a good year all told, I am stronger and looking better than I did a year a go - which is all I can ask for really!
I think I need to up my volume in 2020 and start including friday or perhaps a weekend day into my schedule.

Any suggestions on an app or website for dummies that I can use to build a bodyweight/a few free weight routine for home?
I’m in my 30s and trying to shift my belly flab and build some muscle. It’s proving to be more difficult than it was in my mid 20s
Look at my earlier posts.I’m in my 30s and trying to shift my belly flab and build some muscle. It’s proving to be more difficult than it was in my mid 20s
At its simplest: do some (both steady and intense) aerobic activity, do a variety of push, pull, hinge, squat, rotate, hold(resist) and carry exercises.
Imbalanced and awkward loads are good.

This forum has a wiki with much great info added over the yearsI’m in my 30s and trying to shift my belly flab and build some muscle. It’s proving to be more difficult than it was in my mid 20s
A decent app is called 'strong.'

For body weight routines there are a number contained on the Reddit BWF page.I’m in my 30s and trying to shift my belly flab and build some muscle. It’s proving to be more difficult than it was in my mid 20s
Here are some - https://www.reddit.com/r/bodyweightfitness/wiki/in...
and lots more reviewed here - https://www.reddit.com/r/bodyweightfitness/wiki/kb...
To get them into an app I use strong. I pay for it and like it - you can do loads of clever things with it (which I mostly don't do) but the information is presented clearly and it is straight forward to use.
Thanks for the suggestions folks. I spend a fair bit of time on Reddit so I’ll have a read on that subreddit. I’ve downloaded Strong and will see how I get on.
I’m weary of how busy my local gym will get in a weeks time so the idea of doing a workout at home is appealing plus the weights machines always seem to be in use unless I go stupidly early or late.
I used basic meal prep plus cardio to help shift 6kg over the past few months, had a few weeks off from it but that will be starting again

The most important thing is doing the work. It doesn't matter what app, notepad, calendar or none you use. Have an active life. Keep it simple.

My issue has always been getting my form right. It took me weeks to master proper squats. The benefit of an app is having proper videos/tutorials so I don’t end up messing anything up in the process. That and giving me the best exercise to do rather than me just free styling and messing it up.Have an active life. Keep it simple.

Fair enough. You can do a lot without barbells. I'm a big fan of bodyweight, kettlebells, sandbags, maces etc. You need to know the form for these too, of course, but they are not difficult to learn.

Ive been reading the "World's Fittest Book" by Ross Edgley - My wife bought it for me for Xmas.
It's an easy read, and covers a lot. The emphasis on keeping it simple I agree with, and some of the brief anecdotes about the people he has met are interesting. Having read a fair bit in the past, I've not learned things I didn't know (I prefer "Maximus Body" as a mass-market strength and fitness book). I'm not keen on the layout, the frequent quotes *from himself* make me laugh and the even more frequent filtered/airbrushed photos of him posing in very low riding pants are a bit twee.
His very developed physique and apparently large capacity for training and seemingly incredible feats of endurance whilst retaining the big physique does raise the obvious question about pharmaceutical supplements, though....
