Hope everyones training is going well, mine is flying along nicely, road ride this morning 36kph average, then a 1k sea swim in now really cold water, big chest sesh at the gym, got a 105kg incline bench for 5 which felt good, then a race on Zwift, 15th from 300 starters.

Now you mention it, mine's going quite well. I've been keeping away from heavy weights and concentrating on calisthenics/bw stuff for 5 or 6 months. No injuries for a while, so conclusive proof that BP in any form messes up my rotator cuffs. Nailed a perfect form 15 sec front lever and nearly got planche now. Working alternately levers and pulls through steady state and pavel's pullup program but with calisthenics. Ever tried a front lever with a tiny 2kg ankle weight at the end of each leg? Brutal. Having fun though. Have to take a break soon... .

Doing lots of these at the moment - brutal! Hope the lay off isn't too enforced.

Lay off is planned in three weeks - a weeks skiing. hehe

Good L sit technique Marcus, well done. Have you tried doing them on the floor on your hands? Lots of compression drills and hanging leg raises needed and if you have shortish arms like me you'll need to perform them either on your knuckles or fingers. On the subject of bodyfat where do you think you are right now? I'm going to book a bodypod session at the University in town for myself...just out of curiosity. Reckon I'm about 10%.

Oh nice, I'm off to the French alps in April, not tried the floor yet but even doing these have really highlighted areas of strength that I have neglected, I'm up to a full minute of hold in this position, really is a a near full body workout, BF haven't measured it but maybe heading into single digits, think I have found the right balance of being lean and happy!

I hadn't done any L-sits in ages, so tried last night after seeing your post Marcus. I too managed a minute. Spread over 4 15-sec holds, sadly. However, I'm 93kg and approx. 26% fat according to my scales so we are certainly not in the same condition!
Last night:
Cable EZ curl 5x12
Rope hammer curl 3x12
Unilateral cable curl 4x8-12
Assisted pullup 4x6-10, followed by 5 sets of negatives. I cannot pull high enough to get my chest to the bar, so I've gone back a step to try and improve.
Seated cable row 6x10-12

Good stuff, I'm really enjoying this type of training, adds another dimension from the usual picking heavy st off the floor with a much reduced risk of getting injured too which is always bonus for the more elderly amongst us.

Word.

Have a look at getting a horizontal bar at home if you haven't already. Then if you fancy a year long (or maybe more) challenge front levers separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.

Well done on the L sits Animal. A full body exercise that's the start of a calisthenics journey for many.

Not done them in a long time. Used to have access to a gym that had high ceilings and girders that I could lob a ratchet strap over. Perfect for rings. Don't know how well that would go down in Pure Gym...

That's true. But I've noticed a number of places now are getting bits of gymnastic/calisthenic equipment in. It's rare I guess. I've got an adjustable high bar at home,,,but the ceiling's too low for muscle ups etc.

If its portable, can't you stick it in the garden if you have access to one? Mines been out there for roughly 7 years and still going strong. Its nice to train outside, even in winter.

I went to the gym for about two hours. Got some good lifting in, did some running on the treadmill and then got a good sauna soak. Then I ate an entire pizza. Evens out I hope.

Squatted with a bar for the first time in ages the other day, worked up to 140x 5 easy happy with that. Gonna concentrate on these 'core' type lifts now and less on the ego pressing

Just not practical unfortunately, though some of those outdoor high bars that are designed for all weathers..the kind in your local park,, wouldn't mind some of them.

Eleven miles up hill and down dale in the Pentlands and around reservoirs. Bit breezy out there.

Not sure if many Concept 2 rowers on here, but they've just added a 'real time' 1km course/loop to the app. There are pace-boats plus also other users that you can pass (and be passed by!). Shows time to user in front and behind and how many laps users have done etc, although first time today.

I did 2 x 5k today with the footy on TV and found myself watching the app more! Quite a nice feature and free (other than you need a machine or a gym membership), offers something different.

Seems a good place to ask given the knowledge and age ranges.

I’m 51 years old and have lifted since I was 13. As expected there is a bit of wear and tear on the body but nothing excessive.

3 years ago I had a hernia op which stopped me squatting and deadlifting due to various complications. I did bodyweight lower body stuff but very little weighted work.

4 months ago I started back with lower body work and my deadlifts have improved quickly - 100kg to 200kg. Form is great.

Squats have improved BUT my form is terrible. It’s a real struggle to hit depth and I just can’t not find a groove. It was always my best (and favourite) exercise so it’s slightly annoying.

I’ve identified tight ankles so I’m working on that and I suspect general inflexibility in my hips so I’ll add some work in there.

Any other thoughts or tips to get back in the groove?

Just found this thread!

I’m in my late fifties and up until twelve years ago weight training every week. Then work, life and an injury stopped me lifting and I lost interest.

Last October I decided to try again and see how the old joints, muscles and any problems from the previous injury would impact on lifting weights again. I found a local gym that would give me three months membership to try it out!
I promised myself to take it steady, listen to my body and not give a stuff about what others were lifting in the gym.

By December I was hooked! Signed up for a further 12 months and had no major problems with my body objecting to lifting weights! Main area I intermittently feel it is the joints.

I’m well pleased with my progress. In December the gym did a few challenges and I got the fastest treadmill mile at 5.27 min. I’m lifting heavier on every set than I was 12 years ago.

The difference working out again has made to how I feel is huge and the day to day benefits are clear each day.

I still cycle every week and enjoy that as I have done for ten years. But getting back into weight training has been the best thing I’ve done for a long time.

I was always an upper body only lifter but now I’m branching out to try other regimes and it’s an eye opener!

Never to old!

In gym at 6am before work for quick forty mins, incline chest up to 90kg for 5, decline up to 100kg for 5, close grip flat to 90kg for five then triceps machine, stack x 25. I had got flat bench back to 140 over summer holidays but have hardly trained since bit going so early makes me feel like I've turned a corner, time will tell. Tomorrow will be early dog walk and wed early gym for straight leg deadlifts, bent rows and single arm rows.

Yesterday, hilly road ride, then to the gym, started to do more strong man stuff like heavy bag work, managed a few lifts with a 80kg sand bag onto a 4 stack of wooden boxes, aiming to do the same with 100kg at some point, today quick hour on the bike, 34kph avg which included some hills and loads of traffic lights so pleased with that, then a freezing cold swim in the bay done in the dark.
