And on those off-days, when you can go out in the evening? No can do, the missus wants to actually spend some time with you.

Weekends? The kids want to spend some time with you. Maybe your wider family do. And friends.
Bit dramatic!

I can go for a 5 mile run in the evening and it's only an hour of the evening gone. My kids are in bed and my wife's normally having a bath.

As for the weekends, my kids spend the first couple of hours in their dressing gowns playing with each other - I'm totally happy to duck out for an hour or two at 7am and I genuinely miss zero family time.

Don't take this the wrong way, because it's not a pop at you - but you clearly don't work shifts. SWMBO has been well within her rights to have the hump with me for going out during rare spells we get together, it's not dramatic at all, it's me being selfish. Other times I skip the run and struggle to fit it in elsewhere.

My point remains the same - we've all got different lives, and saying it's a struggle to balance everything is something I can empathise with. Hence why I don't like sweeping statements that suggest anyone finds it a challenge to fit a few hours running in is a junk food eating coach potato.

Oh, side note: I wouldn't trade plodding round Parkrun with the youngsters on Saturday and Junior Parkrun on Sunday (when I'm off) for a faster training run. Occasionally I'll go off for a faster effort, but most of my Parkruns are spent doing it with the family and I'm glad we can do something we all enjoy together.

I do work shifts and we all have different lives so I won't argue the point further other than to say if it's important to you, you should do it. I'd never get the hump with my wife exercising if it was important to her.

Spending time with SWMBO is as important as the next race - just like everything, it's about balance.

And caffeine. Whoever added a timer to coffee machine needs a CBE for services to sport.
