Anyone else suffer from this horrible affliction?
I have had episodes from my twenties onward ( now 69 ) and they seem to be getting more severe the older I get.
The symptoms include bloating, cramping pains in my abdomen and constant farting which is really embarrassing !
Last year the doc. referred me to hospital for a colonoscopy which showed nothing untoward.

I may go months without an episode then suddenly, out of the blue the symptoms return usually lasting from a couple of days to a couple of weeks.
As far as I know, I do nothing different or eat anything different before an episode so am at a loss as to what brings on these attacks.
Should mention my diet, which is vegetarian ( not vegan ). Believe it or not I have never eaten meat or fish in my life, but that's another story.

Anyone have any advice on how I can avoid these attacks, or failing that how I can reduce the severity of the symptoms ?

Would really appreciate any help.

My brother's mild IBS settled once he took wheat out of his diet, as did my father's farting (though we took him off wheat for his Alzheimer's, to great temporary effect).

Keep a diary of food eaten and effects then you'll have some facts to look at rather than just 'AFAIK'.

Took me 30 years to realise that stuff with high ‘liquid’ fat like chicken legs, gravy and full fat mayonnaise caused my bowels to empty explosively almost immediately after consuming them.

It’s definitely stress that causes the more ongoing stuff like the bloating for me and not food related. When I’m not stressed, I’m not bloated at all.

My ‘motions’ are never the same from one day to the next though!

I get episodes that flare up from time to time as well and without fail always seem to come at around 2-3am on a weeknight so I end up having to go to the toilet every five minutes in pain.

Strangely though if I eat anything that is listed as being a common trigger it doesn't normally effect me. The two things i've been able to pin point as setting it off (although again not always) are certain types of supermarket garlic bread and those ready filled scones you get in M&S that have jam and cream in them although as I say it's not always 100% guaranteed to trigger it so I don't know what it is.

Something i've found that is a big help is taking a peppermint pill like Colpermin https://www.boots.com/colpermin-ibs-relief-20-caps... before bed if I think i'm at risk from something i've ate.

Wheat Dextrin sorted me out.

I have had IBS for over 25 years and up until 2 years ago it had become worse and worse.

I tried all sorts of things as it was becoming quite debilitating.

Wheat Dextrin is a soluble fibre and is used by chefs to make Tempura. It is also the ingredient that is resold as Ibuleve (sp?), which comes in a green container.

I put 2 teaspoons on my breakfast cereal and it keeps me right.

Even after finding this I would still have the odd flare up, but, touch wood, I have not had any since I started going regularly to the gym in October 2017.

Good luck in finding something that helps you out.

I suffered IBS throughout my mid to late teens. Around the time I finished school and entered further education it disappeared and I haven't had any problems since.

I've never much thought about this but in retrospect the insecurity and uncertainty of the teenage years and that period of my life, the general stress of secondary school, the bullying that goes with it, the stress of my parent's separation and divorce etc etc affected me physically and when my life settled down the problem went away.

Don't underestimate the propensity for psychological stress to manifest itself physically.

I only got diagnosed recently, all other nasties ruled after cameras both up and down!
However thinking about it I have had digestive problems since childhood.
I pretty much now know what sets me off and either avoid or still consume but prepare for the consequences. Unfortunately in my case this is rapid diarrhoea!
I constantly consume Imodium instants which work wonders for me.
My triggers are:-
Pork especially if fatty
Fatty chicken
Fried food
Prawns
Milk (unless lactose free)
Bread
Yeast
Beer, ales are worst
Probably others
I still eat the above but just careful when and where I am.

Pretty much exactly the same as me. I still eat the trigger foods as well, as long as I’m at home! Can be quite satisfying having a damn good clear out actually hehe
