Two kids and near disaster later, I think it might be time for the snip. She suggested it 6 months ago but I've done nothing. I'll be honest, I'm utterly terrified of the idea.

So how do I go about it? Just ask the docs?

Does it hurt?

Can I still ride my bike afterwards? (I cycle to work)

Anything else to add?

Yes ask your GP who will refer you for an appointment with the hospital.

Still waiting for my appointment to come through.

I had it a couple of years ago, after two healthy kids, who have ruined my sleep patterns. Any more and I would need a different car, and I like my current one.

I had a quick consultation with the GP, who referred me to the right chap.

I had a quick consultation with the right chap, and took the wife along so she could ask any questions too.

I had the op, which took about 10 mins, was painless, and thankfully the nurse was unattractive. It was a bit cold in there too. I got a lift home and was on paracetamol for a couple of days afterwards.

The first week was a bit sore / achy. I worked hard to stop the kids jumping on me and wore snug fitting pants to keep everything from swinging around.

I went back to cycling after 9 days, and was fine, although occasionally a dull ache now and then. After a fortnight, there was no more pain. There isn't really a scar.

After about 10 weeks you provide a "sample" to make sure you're swimmer free. Possibly again after 6 months, I'm not sure.

I received a satisfaction survey in the mail after about 9 months, in which I summarised that I was very happy with the service, would probably only recommend it to close friends, but would not use again.

as above - see the GP, get the op arranged - really quick and simple, keep you awake so try not to look at any reflections in the operating lights!! bit of numbness etc afterwards covered by painkillers - back up and running in a couple of days

Well worth doing if you have reached that point in your life where you don't fancy anymore kids

There are reports that it can mess with ones libido, does anyone have experience of this?

I had it done last may and ended up off work for two weeks. I was clearly one of the people that it really hurt. Sitting down or walking was agony. Actual operation was not sore but the healing was. It was like a had been sledgehammered in the nuts and I was on Fentanyl and other pain meds for other issues and still felt the agony of it. I’d love to meet the people who say they are back to normal after a few days. Everybody I’ve met who had, all had bad dull aching pain for weeks. It is worth it for the results.

I found the operation surreal. Male doctor I'd had a previous appointment with and an attractive middle aged nurse collected me from the waiting room.

As I entered the room, there were two other young women. A doctor and nurse who were both training in new skills. Best to just leave any hang-ups at the door and accept they've seen it all before.

The funny part was when I smelled burning flesh. I'm sure my BBQ joke wasn't very original judging by their reaction to it.

Buy some very tight underwear and wear it for 4+ days afterwards. Dangling under their own weight is not comfortable.

The worst part by a long way is the sample you need to provide a couple of months later. A small, depressing room in the hospital with a thousand stories to tell. I couldn't stand the thought of even sitting in the chair so chose to stand. I was very grateful for a pre-prepared 64GB SD card in my phone wink

Certainly didn't for me, I found it liberating.

I had it done by my GP at the surgery, it was that simple.
Definitely worth doing and dentist appointments have been more unpleasant for me.
I had to take in 2-3 samples later, keeping them warm in my armpit on the way to the hospital. The last time there was no-one available to take the sample so they asked if I could return with another one in a weeks time?
'Again? Do you think I enjoy doing this?!' I asked the nice-looking nurse, feigning my irritation biggrin

I had it done at a local hospital. Wheeled me into operating room on the bed and there was the female doctor and four female nurses all just stood around watching. Hooked up to heart monitor. Started asking me what my job was etc and it was so embarrassing.

As per most of the above, I had no trouble after the initial discomfort for a few days. I was back on a bike, running, lifting weights etc. soon after. It was about 5 years ago.

Don't on day 3 sit down on the toilet as the brown otter that has been building up due to constipation from codeine is about to make it's way out in a big hurry. Jesus I nearly hit the roof as I banged one of the clock-weights on the toilet rim! Squat for a few days over a bucket in an unobserved area of the garden for number twos.

Whilst this did make me giggle a little, it doesn't describe my experience. Partly I suspect because I never had any Codeine.

In a similar position to the OP - under a bit of pressure to go for it. But the odds that 1 in 10 have chronic long term pain aren't doing it for me (NHS figures).

And what about aching from build up of sperm that can't go anywhere?

Absolutely straightforward for me. 10 minute op at my GP's, couple of days of a bit of discomfort, everything normal afterwards.

Regarding the chronic long term pain, I had the op back in 2011 now. For years I had a horrible dull ache like a kick in the nuts pain. Not all the time but sometimes it hit you like well like a kick in the balls.

But the past 3 years say I haven't experianced any pain down there.

Mentally make sure you are prepared too. I know we all think everythings rosy with our partners but things can change quickly. Men are still fertile pretty much forever.

I’ve never understood the choice to go for the snip - opt for the pill use a rubber or a femidom or insert a coil

The risks of any operation are always present and as others have pointed out the chronic pain (irreversible) is not (to me) a low enough probability 1 in 10....

In addition has anyone looked at the levels of prostate cancer for those who have had the snip v those who have not? Regular ejeculation is a good thing regardless of age and it may be the case that helps prostate cancer issues
