That's an odd attitude, given that you could impregnate your wife despite "other contraception". I'd have thought that you would have wanted to be sure.According to a GP, it is the people who don't give the samples and don't discover that the OP wasn't successful who end up with the unwanted conceptions....

I’ve never understood the choice to go for the snip - opt for the pill use a rubber or a femidom or insert a coil
The risks of any operation are always present and as others have pointed out the chronic pain (irreversible) is not (to me) a low enough probability 1 in 10....
In addition has anyone looked at the levels of prostate cancer for those who have had the snip v those who have not? Regular ejeculation is a good thing regardless of age and it may be the case that helps prostate cancer issues
You still ejaculate after the snip. I've got women pregnant while using those other forms of contraception, that's why The risks of any operation are always present and as others have pointed out the chronic pain (irreversible) is not (to me) a low enough probability 1 in 10....

WRt the risk of permanent pain...
- Some may argue that a lifetime of being kicked in the balls is preferable to more children.
On a more serious note, other methods of contraception have lower probabilities of success, and pregnancy itself is more natural, but still carries a level of risk, which increases as the mother gets older. As do the the risks associated with an abortion, physical and mental.
I'm not going to argue with people as to how they view these risks. It's a personal decision that only you can make, (with the consultation of your partner, probably.) But make that decision with as many of the facts as possible. An educated decision is best, but that decision is yours.

Confused.
I was done when I was 35; I'd had my kids and was adamant I wanted no more, the Dr at first was reluctant to refer me due to my relative young age but I the end he referred me; 8 years later and absolutely no regrets.
Regarding samples, I produced them in the comfort of my own home and posted them off.

After about 10 weeks you provide a "sample" to make sure you're swimmer free. Possibly again after 6 months, I'm not sure.

The worst part by a long way is the sample you need to provide a couple of months later. A small, depressing room in the hospital with a thousand stories to tell. I couldn't stand the thought of even sitting in the chair so chose to stand. I was very grateful for a pre-prepared 64GB SD card in my phone
Does this still have to happen on site then? No option to produce a sample in a more comfortable setting and take it in?Aside from the physical experience does anyone have any thoughts on the psychological impact?
I'm seriously considering it though in the back of my mind I'm thinking I'll suddenly see my life in two halves - before the snip and after the snip - and having had it done that I'd feel that I was now in the second half of my life and starting the inevitable slide to my death bed. Maybe I'm overthinking it. I'm 43 BTW.

It didn't have to be on site, but it was not my local hospital. There are time limits to get the sample there.Welshbeef said:

You must only know well organised women then if you think putting contraception entirely in their hands is the way to go. Presumably not serious about using rubbers long term?Easiest thing in the world, we had our second in Feb 2011, I turned 34 in the March and was snipped in the May. Simple, painless, in and out procedure. Only thing I struggled with, the dissolving stitch didn't seem to want to dissolve, so I removed them both with a pair of nail scissors.

Given your username, the last part of this post doesn't exactly surprise me!Still waiting for my appointment after the GP referred me about 7 weeks ago. I was expecting some kind of "are you sure?" chat with the doc, (nurse practitioner actually) but she just keyed the details into the computer and sent me on my way.
