Having another migraine at the moment. Taken a sumitripitan once I got the aura as it felt like a bad one coming on. 50 mins later I still cannot see properly and the headache is building. Also taken ibuprofen and cocodamol. Sunday ruined.

Currently on my second migraine. I think the sumitripitan has really messed me up. Never felt this bad after a migraine and never experienced a issue with my vision for this long after one.

Always get the feeling a migraine is imminent when driving to work on a sunny winter morning with the low sun filtering through.

Do you consistently drink alcohol? Alcohol cab Leach magnesium levels.

No I drink a lot less than I used to. I had a bottle of brew dog nanny state on Saturday evening but that was all. I drink maybe 2 beers a week, much less than I used to. I did have a good drink the weekend before but no migraine.

I don't think there is an immediate cause then effect. I think it's a lessening, body coping then a trigger that helps it along.

It's not a switch. For instance I can't drink coffee or tea (even decaf) but I can drink coffee in alcohol.

Magnesium is definitely a factor. Especially in aura migraines.

Thanks, that is interesting reading and food for thought. I am going out on Saturday evening and was planning on having a few beers so I will test whether or not alcohol is a trigger for Monday, or specifically, beer, as I drank some cognac several weeks ago and didn't suffer a migraine for over a week.

My wife is also collecting some magnesium supplements for me and my gp has prescribed me a stronger dose of propranolol.

That was interesting. Been feeling crappy for most of the week. Took my blood pressure this evening and it was fine but my heart rate was low. Called 111, told me to go to a & e. Spent. Few hours there and my heart rate had picked up a bit, enough for them to not be too concerned. They want to reduce my propranolol dosage as they think it's too much and is causing me this issue. Dropping from 160mg a day to 120mg a day. Hopefully it is still affective against my migraines.

Just had my first migraine for 2 weeks. Aura but only a minor headache. I might actually still he able to function today.

No alcohol for 2 weeks, taking vit d and magnesium daily. Happened about 5 minutes after getting out of bed.

Talks of the prominitory phase.

Kinda rings true.

I've been on magnesium for months. Not had a whisper. So this week I hit sausages, cheese, wine and chocolate.

A day after having cheese, a large glass of red and quite a few small bits of chocolate one day later I had a aura that lasted exactly 20mins.

I've not had a migraine for three months.

I need to start keeping a food and drink diary. I am still alcohol free and other than that my eating habits haven't changed. I am going to my works Xmas do next Friday so I'll be having a few beers then, but not too many as I am on call. It'll be interesting to see if it triggers a migraine. I hope not, I have a fridge and cupboard full of beer to drink, plus I'm at a beer festival in 2 weeks. It would be really disappointing if after drinking beer for 20 years that it has suddenly become a migraine trigger. Since I started to get migraines I have drank alcohol and not experienced a migraine a day or 2 later. Sometimes it has been a week and others 2 weeks.

Beer can be a big trigger for some just as red wine can.

You can also be sensitive to something then develop further sensitivity to it. I.e. I can't touch caffeine now after years of overdoing it.

Thankfully caffeine isn't a problem for me, but I have reduced my intake of it anyway as I thought it was a trigger. I am going to have a beer this weekend. I was checking my drinking habits and found that it is inconclusive whether or not my migraines are caused by drinking alcohol. Sometimes I have not had a migraine at all, sometimes next day, sometimes 2 days later. But I do not know if I would have had a migraine anyway. I'll soon find out. If I have a beer tomorrow night then I would expect a migraine on Tuesday or Wednesday. I am hopeful that I do not get one.

Purely lack of sleep for me. Can almost guarantee that after a week with limited sleep I get loss of vision on the edge of vision, followed by geometric multi coloured flashing patterns (quite spacey !)

The headache follows in about 5 minutes, which is just enough time for paracetamol and ibuprofen mix to stop any pain.

Once had one during a reactor startup and I just had to push through, drinking lots of water and consciously trying to relax and not tense any muscles, was suprisingly effective.

I’ve had them since I was around 16. Up until I was 30, they’d be quite rare, maybe 2 a year, excruciating headache, neck tension feeling like my shoulders want to climb above my ears, combined with vomiting and bright flashing aura so bad I’ve been known to be screaming about the brightness even in a pitch black room.

Used to take Syndol which worked ok but not great.

Wind forward a few years and the symptoms aren’t so bad, the nausea isn’t there and the headache is less intense. They only really come on overnight so also believe they’re stress related (feels like when my body relaxes at night, the neck tension takes over and triggers one)

I take Zolmitriptan if one starts and it’s enough to prevent it getting worse. Ideally I still need a dark room, paracetamol and ibuprofen and to sleep it off but often now I can function if I take the Zolmitriptan in time.

GP also prescribes a low dose of Amitriptyline taken at night which helps with the tension and I now feel I can function like a normal adult except on the rare occasions it’s a particularly bad one.

For anyone suffering I’d say 110% get a decent GP... there could be other triggers such as high BP etc, and if tests show you’re ok at least they can try some of the triptan medications.

Any tips/stuff one can take to prevent the aura or lessen it?

I was out drinking with a friend on Sat night and I didn't know he suffered from migraines.

He went private to a neurologist who prescribed him candesartan.

He takes one a day and the difference has been dramatic. Since taking it he's also noticed he doesn't get a thick fuzzy head anymore. He didn't realise he suffered from shadows until he took the medication.

I've just changed medication. I've come of propranolol as it doesn't seem to have been making a difference and I am getting the visual disturbances side effects. I am now on amytriptiline, starting at 10mg for the next 4 nights moving up 10mpg every 4 days upto to 75mg. If I stop getting migraines at say 30mg then I don't need to increase the dosage.

I had a migraine yesterday evening but not much of a headache. I didn't sleep very well but that is because I was called out to fix an IT issue. Hoping that the visual disturbances go away soon. Seems to mainly be in my left eye.

Google "Daith piercing".

My DiL has suffered from migraines for many years and had her inner ear pierced several weeks ago and since then has not had a single headache or migraine.

Coincidence? Maybe but she would normally get at least one a week so there might be something in it.

You can pay me later if it works smile
