The aura for me starts as a blind spot and I notice someone’s eyes for example seem to be missing. They then develop into a neon type diamond pattern that is really quite beautiful if it didn’t signify the coming blindness and slight nausea to follow.
That's exactly what I get. I was told that it's due to blood vessels constricting in the back of the eye and cutting off blood flow but I don't know how true that is.I had my first big one in about 2 years last thursday- I was looking at a spreadsheet and suddenly couldn't see it. Within 10 minutes I was struggling to put a sentence together.

Ouch, doesnt affect my cognitive faculties, only eyesight a bit and then a headache, which is lucky as I supervised a reactor startup with one (once I had enough eyesight )Currently taking zomig when the headaches are bad, but try to avoid them as they leave me confined to bed.

I take 375mg of magnesium a day. Should I be taking more?
I don't usually get a very bad headache when I get a migraine. It's usually either silent, or I have a headache each time I cough or swallow, but it isn't persistent. I do not think I suffer with cluster headaches. Tbh, if I were to get a migraine once every 2 months then I think I could live with that, considering I was getting them most weeks.

Long term sufferer here too sadly. Stress and food related. Food is the easy one (fish and chips are a killer as is some fast food). Stress not so with teenage kids!
I had them regularly last year and was taking sumatriptan, which was a bit hit/miss. The odd thing was that after taking sumatriptan my migraines evolved and I started throwing up (nausea from the migraine as opposed to the drugs).
I'm not quite sure what's changed (stress possibly) but I've now stopped taking sumatriptan and have gone into codiene and paracetamol, which seems to do the trick, if I take them early enough.
The trouble with bloody migraines is that I thought I was doing ok and then out of the blue I wake up with one on Sunday, feeling sick and then spend the whole day throwing up with a banging head. Never had one like that before.

I also get ocular migraines been having them since i was 11 now 49 used to get maybe 4 or 5 a year then suddenly started getting two a day, went to the docs who sent me to a neurologist who sent me for a scan which was all clear.
He did say i may have a PFO (hole in the heart) test was positive although a very small hole less than 20 micro bubbles but the neuro said often people who suffer migraines have a PFO ?
Mine start with a small blank spot to one side left or right it gradually gets larger and is accompanied with an arced flashing zig zag and i sometimes feel a bit fuzzy, the blank spot sometimes becomes quite large lasts 25 mins to the second every time and then it gradually disappears.
They don't really bother me i just get on with what I'm doing flicking my eyes around to try beat the blank area back to one a month at the moment.
No headache for me

google aspartame - it took 10 years of misery to work out that this caused all my issues - its in all diet drinks and even some non diet stuff
The day I stopped drinking robinsons barley water was the end of my misery
BE CAREFUL - in america, they have just renamed it

Joy of joys, back to having daily migraines at the moment. Had one yesterday afternoon and one started about 10 / 15 mins ago. I've not had any sugar free drinks with Aspartame in for ages, so I am convinced that it is not the cause. fk knows what is. Going to have to call my GP tomorrow, especially if it happens again tomorrow.
Found out that I'm coeliac in January. Since then I've been on a gluten free diet. In the precious four decades I've not gone a month (very often not a week) without a migraine/cluster headache. Now I've had six months free. I've not taken a single zolmitriptan.
There are downsides: gluten free bread is terrible and I've come out in hives. But compared with the headaches, it's wonderful!

My GP has suggested I take 600 to 900mg of Aspirin next time I get a migraine with a headache. Also prescribed me Almotriptan. Hopefully have more success with that than Sumatriptan.
TBH, while the headache is awful, the aura is worse as I cannot do anything for about 30 to 60 minutes when I have a migraine.

I had one a few weeks back. The aura came on just as I was about to leave for work in the morning. Ended up leaving late but thankfully a full blown migraine didn’t follow. Whereas last year September time I had a terrible one following an aura.
I know my triggers though, stress, poor sleep, and the low autumn/winter sun. I find taking Nurofen rapid relief helps.

PFO/Strokes and migraine may all be linked, and maybe migraines are on the spectrum of strokes. He did say i may have a PFO (hole in the heart) test was positive although a very small hole less than 20 micro bubbles but the neuro said often people who suffer migraines have a PFO ?

I used to get migraines, then had a TIA/Stroke, got my PFO closed and have not had a migraine since.
that said some of the drugs they put you on after strokes (clopidogrel) apparently have an anti migraine effect in themselves.
Its complicated area with no obvious answers.....
