lateral collateral ligament surgery
Discussion
Very long story short, been to my osteopath this evening and she took a look at my right knee which has been troublesome for a few years.
She’s of the opinion that my lateral collateral ligament is damaged. I have way too much side to side movement in my knee, along with pain when I squat.
She’s doing a letter to my GP to refer me for an MRI but she’s convinced it’ll be a surgery job as it’s pretty bad and I’ll need reconstruction... she said something about taking tissue from my hamstring to reconstruct the ligament?
I’ve read on line various reports of the surgery with anything up to 8 weeks on crutches... that’ll be really difficult for me (have kids who live 50 miles away) so I’m now a bit vexed about the prospect of surgery.
Anyone had it who can give me an idea?

The fibula collateral, or lateral collateral is very very very very rarely damaged in isolation. The odds say that it probably will be something else.
Your MRI probably won't give as good an answer as seeing an experienced sports physio,
or a sports knee surgeon..........
MRI isn't the answer, but it will be of help.
Wiliferus I note you are in Berkshire.
I recommend speaking to Adrian Wilson or one of his team, The_Doc knows him and he did a meniscal repair and ACL tidy up a few years ago at the The Hampshire Clinic in Basingstoke. He private website is here https://profadrianwilson.co.uk/ .
He discovered I had a fully ruptured MPFL which hasn't been repaired as the knee is pretty stable for cycling, brace needed for patella support if skiing.
He also works in the NHS still at Basingstoke although you will be waiting a while on the NHS.
I can vouch for James Frimpong at http://www.fleetphysio.co.uk/index.php/meet_the_te... who works here in Fleet part time, the rest of the time he works at this specialist knee centre doing pre and post opp work https://activ8rehab.co.uk/
Good luck.

Is the question about the length of time on crutches post surgery?
I had a patella stabilisation procedure back in February and two months on crutches is about what I needed, but even after this, I was still struggling - I could drive at this point, but only because I’ve got an auto and it was my left leg. I think I’d have needed another month before driving if it was my right leg.
However, whenever I question my current lack of recovery (9 months on I’m still limping around, struggling on stairs and can’t jog yet) I just get told “everyone recovers at a different speed” so you may do better than I have.

Thanks ALawson, that’s very very useful info. I’m the Basingstoke side of Reading so that’s accessible for me. I may well book in the for a consultation and see what he thinks.
As for recovery, yes I suppose everyone is different. I’ll just have to see whether I end up down that road, and ultimately it can’t be helped. If it needs fixing, it needs fixing.

A little bird told me Mr Wilson had stopped NHS and gone 100% private just recently. Could be a rumourAs for recovery, yes I suppose everyone is different. I’ll just have to see whether I end up down that road, and ultimately it can’t be helped. If it needs fixing, it needs fixing.
We do the same operation irrespective of NHS/Private, but the aftercare and the waiting time (and biscuits) can be different.
But Private gets you easy choice of the planet Earth for treatment, on (usually) your timescale.
we all pay for healthcare, whether you pay again is your choice
2018 NHS budget £124bn, or £2,000/yr each
9% ish of GDP, and the EU countries that do it right spend more like 11%

Plenty of information on kneeguru.com

Have a good read about the anatomy of the knee and the common tests and results, will help a lot in interpreting the referral from your GP (which I assume you have posted above).
The_Doc will be able to put it into plain English!

To be fair, I know it’s not ideal for everyone, but personally I don’t think you put a price on your health. If I need to pay private for the best outcome, I will. numtumfutunch said:

I’m not knocking the NHS in anyway, in fact I champion the NHS, but sometimes sticking your hand in your pocket is the sensibke choice if you have the means.
