Bowel cancer screening
Discussion
During my colonoscopy the doctor found a nasty yellow polyp. As he offered up the Death To Polyps attachment it fell off. It was a kernel of sweet corn.
Bowel - Normal.
I had concerns, they had concerns, they checked, it was fine. If jt hadn't been fine there was a good chance it could have been sorted out. Yes, the whole thing is undignified but it's considerably better than dying of ignorance.

As I've just passed my 60th, I've been sent one of these delightful packs. I will read and action it, but can't quite bring myself to do it today, the thought is revolting. I bet many don't bother, wondering what the uptake is? 10-20% I shouldn't wonder.
Got mine just before Christmas left it as I didn't want a holiday time mix up. Got a letter yesterday saying where is the poo 😁. So when the need comes tomorrow , I'm in 😂V8FGO said:

Never had the 'samples' thing. My BiL lives 15 miles down the road from me, is a year younger (56) but has been summoned for a routine/precautionary Colonoscopy. I haven't had that either, however
That would be right.
The screening starts at 60. And it's available for a reason.
My wife and I followed all the advice for 30+ married years.
Never smoked, exercised, not over weight, moderate alcohol consumption, good diet with little meat etc.
Within the space of four months, at 64 and 61, both got cancer. Myself as detailed above.
My beautiful, warm, witty, just all round lovely wife thought she had a chest infection.
It didn't clear. Admitted to hospital. Diagnosed on the same day with a massive lung tumour.
She died two weeks later. It still doesn't seem possible.
Use the screening tests and don't be fobbed off.
Thanks for sharing, that's a wake up call. That would be right.

I am very sorry to hear of the loss of your wife. We all live in some degree of fear of this happening but few suffer as you have; condolences. That would be right.

I'm 3 weeks post op from my latest of 3 ops for bowel cancer. It has been a very unpleasant 8 months but I am now cancer free.
I was only 52 when diagnosed, and no previous medical history.
I can't get my head around why anyone would avoid the tests. It is a truly horrible disease but one that can be treated easily if caught early.

A few years ago I had a camera inspection at both ends (not at the same time!). I had swallowed the super mix designed to clean you out some hours before going in and all was good, except the bds gave me an enema as well anyway.
That was all clear.
My point is i've now had an appointment for bowel cancer screening where they explain they're sending a self administered enema kit out. I'm not fking googling it for instructions.
Told the wife she's got to earn her money.

One of my workmates has just been though this - he's 62 but fit, active and not over weight.Eats sensibly and doesnt cane the beers...
Had the camera up the bum and then was diag as +ve Bowel cancer.
3 weeks later hes in the hospital having half his ahole removed.....
That all went ok and he doesnt need a stoma bag, BUT he does need some chemo, and this is whats really knocking him sideways...
The actual op to remove a section of bowel, he would be back to work in a month, but the (mild) chemo he is having is really screwing him up, and its very tought to see and hear....
(And just to kick him properly in the nads, the day he came out of hospital, the MIL who lived with them died in hospital!)
Get well soon Baz mate.

Had a colonoscopy this afternoon, after 2 unusual poo stick results. I'm 64 and previous 2 tests proved normal Received the second result with an appointment booked at a local hospital 10 days ago. Explained what they were going to do last Tuesday and sent me away with the laxative pack.
Took that last night and this morning. Not unpleasant to take, just the amount of fluid! Watched the procedure on the screen, showed me a small polyp, and removed it there and then. Results from that in a week. Didn't seem too concerned.
For those that get the kit, I urge you to use it. If your result requires further investigation, go ahead.Nothing hurts, and your life can be saved. Many thanks to the excellent staff at Kettering General Hospital.

Pretty well exactly my experience. No great problem and when the good news comes back it's all worthwhile.Took that last night and this morning. Not unpleasant to take, just the amount of fluid! My father died of bowel cancer in his mid-50s, as a result it plays on my mind. My GP has advised that the earliest camera session I can have is when I'm 10 years younger than my Dad's age at death so that's due in a year or two.
In the meantime I've bulk-bought poo sticks and do the test every 3 months, it's quite fun trying to catch the turtle. Just lay off the beer, fruit and spicy food for a few days prior, harder to catch an explosive one. You also want something more solid to scrape the polyp.

My Dad died before he was 50 from Bowel Cancer, for anyone reading this that is worried about the sticks or camera stuff, it's really straight forward - alot more straight foward than dying slowly and very unpleasantly.
The camera stuff is only uncomfortable - I've had it done twice (it feels a bit like indigestion as they zoom around your gut - you can watch on screen if you want - it's pretty cool!).
Seriously, just get it done

I listen to Christian O'Connell (still) after he moved to Australia, and last week they had a guy called Peter Logan call in who was Stage 4 with bowel cancer. Think he was in his 50's, and kept putting the test off. Now he's more or less terminal.
I'm 31, and never had great bowel movements. But after listening to the guy I want to get the test done.
