Its 4 years 11 months for me after 24 years on sift (37 actually working for the same company), not that im counting either.

Reading back through this someone said the same thing as me. People that work nights and evenings tend to sleep immediately after work, rather than immediately before. That's what I would struggle with.

I tried to stay up until 10am after nights. Although I only made it until 930ish, I slept until 1830. Up and out the house by 1915 for nights. Worked for me.

I'm loving my short commute! Woke up just before 0600. Able to have a unrushed shower, out the house by 0700. Stopped off at Tesco for some cakes and walk through the door at 0730.

Left at 1715 and home by 1740 after getting stuck behind a tractor.

Only two earlies as well!

I loved working nights. The shift pattern was 2 earlies, 2 lates, 2 nights folllowed by 4 rest days. Sadly undiagnosed Bipolar was triggered by this leading to a prolonged period of mania and hypomania. The circadian rhythm is a powerful thing and employers should imo be doing more around health of workers doing nights. That said, I did love the walk home along the empty streets.

My first ever night shift tonight.
My 1 year old had me up quite a lot last night so the plan is to get a couple of hours this afternoon.

I always have a normal sleep pattern for the first night of the block so end up knackered. Unless you force yourself to transition it's always tiring. TBH your 1 year old probably did you a favour, get your head down for a bit and you're away....

I’m on 4 on 3 off as training has been shelved and working around my wife needing to work too, so they aren’t long stints at the mo thankfully.
I’ve heard from people who’ve done 6 on the run because of overtime and they have been zombies at the end.
Will try and sleep about 2pm for two hours then I’ll be up then till 6am. Shift is 8-5.

We are considering a 2 day 2 night 3 off four shift cycle pattern as a resilience step if CV19 causes more staff to drop out.

Glad I am on days at the moment (well sort of, actually working 12 hour days, 6 days a week at the moment)

doing 7x 12 hour nights this week, this is night number 6.

Done 1 from the office and the other 6 from home, its strange working from home!

Im coping well with nights at the moment...its earlies that im fked on. Two or three hours sleep at most. Which then means im tired for the rest of the set.

I can do 12 hour nights not an issue, but 12 hour days (0700-1900) cant handle them at all, my deep sleep is 0400-0900 and alarm goes off at 0530 for days.

So my wife is coming to the end of her first rotation on nights... she actually loves it!

She has been doing 3 nights on 7pm-7am, 4 nights off, in a 5 week block.

Despite both our worries she has coped really well, managed to sleep fine, and hasn't been too moody at all...certainly no more than usual!!

Typically she gets to sleep around 8:30/9am, sleeps through until about 3:30pm, we have an early dinner around 5:30pm then she's off for her shift.

On her days off she's been going to sleep "earlier" sometime between 2 and 4am, but trying to keep her nocturnal pattern in place...this seems to work really well, she will sleep til 1 or 2pm.

Apparently there's a lot less BS to deal with on nights, and the shifts go a lot smoother, she's trying to fill out the paperwork at the moment to be rotated onto them more frequently, and wouldn't mind doing it semi permanently, unexpectedly it seems to suit her and us.

Result all round.

Night 1 went ok.
2000 start and got home and in bed for 0300 due to not much needing to be done at work.
Awake for 0800 to look after the baby and slept at 1000 till 1230.
Can’t see an early dart tonight so it should be a 2000-0500.

Half expecting to be pulled over due to there being zero cars on the road travelling to and from work.

I hate working night, hate it

But, turns out it CAN get worse - and that's when you have to do it from home. Yuck

It is a little weird from home, in the office at night there's office banter, at home there's just the dogs looking at me saying why are you still awake.

I'm about to start a new job. The hours are 0200 to 1030. Any suggestions on sleep, etc?

depends on how much sleep you think you need. Me personally, i do fine with around 4-7 hours, with a long sleep on on weekends or day off to refresh.
so during my shift week, I start at 7pm finish 7am, up til around half 10, crash, up at around 2pm, if i'm lucky i get some from the mrs (but havnt been very lucky for over a year) shower change and chill out until its 5pm and start getting ready for work again. I used to squeeze in a workout, but i havent in a while, should really get back into it seeing as the kids are off school at the moment

avoid eating red meat or complex carbs on a nightshift. dont forget fluids either and lay off tea coffee 2 hours towards end of shift. 3m er plugs are good to use.

I slept from around 2200 until 0130 and now wide awake...alarm goes off at 0500. Hopefully I can get a couple more hours!

After 9 and a half years of 0445 alarms I think I’m preferring nights at the moment.
Guaranteed sleep and plenty of time before going to work to do whatever.
