I managed to stop myself by cutting my nails really short, it worked, great.........nope I now bite the dry skin on my fingers instead which is worse!!!! frown
Yeah, i do that too..can be quite painful when you over do it!
I tend to nail bite and bite the skin when I’m stressed, to the point my girlfriend will look at my hands and simply say “what are you stressed about now?”
It's just a habit with me, one I can't stop, Mrs Bobbers gets so annoyed with me doing it she quite often just belts me one to stop me!!!

Just a suggestion smile

But why doesn't everyone reading this thread that still bites their nails/skin makes a big effort to stop today, II promise you after four or five days you will actually be proud of yourself for breaking the habit, then shape them with a pair of small curved nail scissors.

I would be interested if you report back and let us know how you went on. biggrin

One tip. When a nail has grown long clip it, as if you get a snag it can be all too tempting to resort to form.....

Anyone still doing it should just stop. You look like a moron, it's extremely irritating for other people and with even great hand hygiene you are putting all sorts of bugs in your mouth when doing it. Really gives me the rage.
Sir! Yes sir! Ha only joking, i couldn't give a fk what someone like you thinks, especially if you get so worked up by something so insignificant. Ive been bighting my nails all my life, its no ones buisness, least not yours. You mention hygiene, but i very rarely get ill, maybe one cold a year, so thats not an issue. Id say the one here looking like a moron is you pal, maybe some therapy might help?

Surely the best solution is to wear false nails? wink

Anybody else done the same
same here - I bit my nails until I was mid 20s, tried all of the disgusting paint things and always went back to biting them. not sure why I did it, habit I suppose. I used to bite them super short. Horrible really.

Then all of a sudden stopped and never looked back - It wasn't a conscious decision, it just happened.

The problem I now have is that they get too long. I do bite them to shape them rather than using clippers but have never bitten them down as I used to before.

It's much nicer to have nails rather than stumps. I think it is horrible when you see a grown up with nails that are bitten.

When this thread popped up yesterday I made the decision to give it another go, it will probably take atleast month of growth before i would need to locate any nail clippers though!

I'm a biter, done it since I was about 8 or 9.

Used to use the nail varnish stuff but would get used to the taste after a while.

Seeing this I'm going to try and give up. Now.

I suspect that that sticking your fingers in your mouth does expose you to more germs than someone who doesn't. I also suspect that regular exposure to a bit of dirt and germs has huge benefits with keeping your immune system working well. I cant remember the last time I was ill, maybe it buggers up your ability to remember things smile

The body does indeed build up immunity to germs. There's probably more germs on your phone mouth piece than in your toilet bowl.

I have just taken some 'before' pictures and frankly i am too embarrassed to post them, but maybe they will help to motivate me.

My OH was a a nail biter up until a few years ago.

The event which stopped it in its tracks was her 7 year seeing her doing it, and asking her what she was doing. She casually replied ‘ biting my nails’.

A confused look came over his face, and his next logical question was simply “ why?

She was, pardon the pun, stumped for an answer.

Seemed to do the trick.

Sorry to those of you who do, but have you thought how childish you appear during, or indeed, after the act?
My only defence is I don't bite them in public/at work etc. TBH it's no worse than seeing people smoke or vape; it's vice just like any other.

Hmmnn, not so sure - you are chewing/eating bits of yourself, hardly call that a vice!

And you need to be of an age to be able to smoke, whereas biting nails is the sort of thing you grow out of when you're 10.

Sympathies to those of you that feel you have to do it, it really does makes you look silly.

I've been biting my entire life. It's got to the point that, if I let my nails grow even a little bit, I find I can't type because my nails hit the keys rather than the flesh of my fingers. As I have to type huge amounts for my job, I guess I'll just keep biting them.

Having said that, I've got no great drive to stop. Don't see it as a problem that needs fixing...

I bite a little, but my much worse habit is chewing pens. I go through several a day and every now and again get covered in ink. Not sure why I can't stop - I've tried - but next time I'm deep in thought I'm back at it!

This is something I’d like to stop this year.

I have been doing it my whole life and my nail beds are wrecked, but even a minor aesthetic improvement would be welcome.

I’ll start from today and see how I go!
I bite my nails when I’m anxious and when I’m stressed, I also rub the left side of my head on the temples when I’m stressed and it gives me all these funny little spots

You can get stuff like clear nail varnish with a bad taste that stops you biting your nails aswell.
