Have an elderly friend who had this problem flaring up for a while. He cut out eating anything with tomatoes in and problem went away. Worth a try.

My experience is that doctors read about gout in medical books and think they know what it’s all about BUT the reality is that every sufferer is different, has different trigger foods and reasons they have gout* and when it comes to understanding the way to really test for it they often fall short. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had to educate doctors on the subject.

  • Although it’s a uric issue, for some people it’s the kidneys not doing their job properly to filter it out and for others it’s the body over-producing the acid so even properly working kidneys can’t cope.
Allopurinol is an inhibitor which stops/reduces production of uric acid by the body and thus “cures” gout.
it'd be funny how outdated doctors ideas of trigger foods are if it weren't so damn serious and annoying. I eat drink pretty much all the "trigger foods" all the time and get an attack once or twice a year.

Allopurinol, is that the one the doc wants me on, but I've heard it gets worse if you stop taking it, so once you're on it you're on it for life?

It’s certainly one of the many trigger foods and one you would never think of.
It’s such a pita as everyone seems to have different triggers.

Yes it’s for life. I’ve been on it for about 14 years now and have never had a single twinge in those years. I’m sure if I stopped I’d be back to get to getting attacks but cannot imagine them ever being worse than they were.

I don’t drink much, as has already been said everyone has a different trigger.

I take 100mg of allopurinol daily for gout, still get the odd attack every few months that lasts for 24 to 48 hours. Maybe I need a stronger dose.

Get your Uris acid tested. On the scale they used for me, sub-300 was safe. 300-350 was high. 350-400 probable gout attack pending. Above 400 is very high. Mine was 430 before allopurinol treatment, then 340 after 100mg a day. Now it’s 280 on 200mg a day.

I'm going to make an appointment after new year to get it tested. As I type this I have a little bit of pain in my right foot that I usually get when I have an attack. It's not mega painful thankfully, but not ideal. Thanks

If it helps. . . . Gout needs to be treated with drugs initially as the home remedies aren't man enough BUT they are good after initial control by your Dr; it takes time to find what works best so by a diary only for gout and write what you try along with a written 'daily' score out of 10 of how you feel

Sorry, didnt realise this thread carried on.

Right, had blood tests done, and again it shows im 'threshold levels' but given what I've told this doctor he (still) doesnt believe its gout, x-ray normal again.

So he's also booked me in to the muscular skeletal team for examination, since he thinks its ligament issues.

Ironically the day after I saw the doctor it hurt a lot, I had 2 days of prednisone left, took them, and it went away. However it then came back in my other foot a few days later.... Doctor still not convinced.

However the blood test showed a couple of other causes for concern, a high liver enzyme signifying either alcohol problems or 'fatty liver', since I've been doing epic boozing and piling on the lbs recently it could be either, so its off for an ultra sound on the stomach to check the liver out. In addition it seems I have high blood sugar, not dangerous yet, but possibly pre-diabetic. So either way a pretty drastic diet overhaul needs to happen which has started already, along with cutting out the booze for a little while!

More blood tests booked in too, so quite a lot needs to be worked out!

So your showing signs of metabolic syndrome and gout can be part of that but could be sub clinical at this stage?

Sort your st out. Lose weight, exercise, better diet etc and it won't be a surprise I'd the gout pain sorts itself out.

Think of the gout (suspected) as a symptom of a wider issue, you need to treat the cause as best you can to get the best outcome.

Oh and what specific part of your foot hurts? Just out of interest.

Very interesting, that looks like it could be it.

As for the foot, it depends, usually the outer edge and the area around the ankle bone, spreading to the balls of the feet. Doctor here still isn't convinced its gout.

Just had a load more blood tests today, 6 vials taken.

Have already started a strict diet! but thats often the way, I manage to drop some weight eat healthy but then go away for a month or two. Its going to need a lot more focus to stay healthy on the road, but obviously needs to be done!

Although gout can attack any joint, I’ve never heard of it attacking the outer ankle to the ball!

How long does it usuallty take for gout in the big toe joint to go away?

Been to the docs. Got Naproxen tablets and advised to drink loads of water which I have been doing.

I've had it over a week now and its no better. Getting seriously pissed off with it!
