How long does it usuallty take for gout in the big toe joint to go away?
Been to the docs. Got Naproxen tablets and advised to drink loads of water which I have been doing.
I've had it over a week now and its no better. Getting seriously pissed off with it!
You need Colchicine. That disolves the crystals that have formed. Naproxen will only reduce the swelling. It'll go in 2-3 days with the correct treatment.Been to the docs. Got Naproxen tablets and advised to drink loads of water which I have been doing.

Great. Yet another bun fight for another doctors appointment to get the correct stuff. I'm guessing Naproxen is cheaper? Thanks for the info though FB

Then once it's gone get your Uric Acid checked, and treated if required.
My experience of Welsh doctors through my late parents is shocking,

I posted the same advice on this thread on the 21st December 2019.
Cochicine to get rid of it, then Allopurinol for (probably) the rest of your life to keep it at bay.

This time I only got as far as the assessment nurse (they decide if you need to see a doctor) who gave me Naproxen as this is the first time they have seen me with it.
Called them up yesterday. Apparently I've already been treated so my only option is to see the doctor. The first non-assessed appointment is in 2 weeks time!
So Cochicine isn't option this time. Been reading about cherry capsules, any good?
I swear by diclofenac when I get an outbreak.
I probably should go to the doctor rather than buying it OTC when I'm out of the country. Had it diagnosed via a blood test at a work medical so I think my medical history probably says I suffer from it.
I find cherry pills from Holland and Barrett can help, but equally they might be a placebo. Weirdly I'm not entirely sure that gout is tied to foods for me. There's no real pattern - one thing which there is a pattern though is stress. A stressful couple of weeks and I tend to get an outbreak.

This is why GPs get it so wrong. They assume it’s always triggered by the same thing whereas the reality is we all get triggered by a myriad of things. So its now march and i have the gout back again.
I'm not even sure it ever totally went away. The colchicine did get rid of the pain but the advised course of 12 tablets ran out before the symptoms.
Back to the screening nurse again today for my 3rd round of colchine and finally they agreed to blood tests/doctor appointment.
A question to colchicine takers. I now have 14days supply but the advice leaflet suggests the maximum course should only be 4 days.
Its pretty nasty stuff, anyone taking it long for longer periods?

Are you not on allopurinol?
No. Just colchicine and naproxen. Due to the way my local surgery works I havent actually managed to see a doctor yet as everything has to go through an assessment screening nurse who perscribed the above. I now have a doctors appointment for 2 weeks time so maybe that will be their advice when I go.K77 CTR said:
Normally the maximum dose for acute gout is 6mg for the total course. 14 days seems an odd prescription. It can be given 500mg twice daily whilst starting treatment on allopurinol but that wouldnt be done in an acute flare.
Ok thanks so a max dose would normally be 6 days at 2x 500mg a day?I have been given 28 pills with so hence the confusion. A 4 day course has some pretty unpleasant dietry implications for me so 14 days doesnt sound like much fun!
I'm in a similar position. Moderate to severe pain in the ankle right in the joint, i have AS so they sent me for a bloodtest. Inflamation levels normal, urate level 0.53, no idea how this compares.
Been lingering on for nearly 6 weeks now, neproxen hasn't shifted it. Rung doctor and been prescribed colchicine so pick that up tonight.
How long do peoples flair ups generally last?

Allopurinol - long term - to keep it away. I been taking Allopurinol for some 10 years.

Doc told me to wait until I had 2 or more episodes in a year before starting taking allopurinol. This is only my 2nd one ever that I know of, first one over 18 months ago. Allopurinol - long term - to keep it away. I been taking Allopurinol for some 10 years.
