I have been a long sufferer of the dreaded Gout and know how miserable it can be. For me I have worked out the following; Red wine, Mushrooms and Olives will bring on an episode. Everone is different and will be affected by all manner of foods and drink. However, I was fortunate to go to a temporary Doctor at my surgery and he too suffered Gout and prescribed me steroids. If I get an attack I take ten steroids on the first day then eight on the second day and so on. But if it goes you stop taking them. I have been doing this for 4-5 years and combined with avoiding certain foods/drinks I rearly get an attack now.

I'm in a similar position. Moderate to severe pain in the ankle right in the joint, i have AS so they sent me for a bloodtest. Inflamation levels normal, urate level 0.53, no idea how this compares.
Been lingering on for nearly 6 weeks now, neproxen hasn't shifted it. Rung doctor and been prescribed colchicine so pick that up tonight.
How long do peoples flair ups generally last?
Below 0.3 is the level, we’re gout shouldn’t happen. 0.53 is high. Mine was 0.45 after a month w9thout drinking, and now on allopurinol. But that’s not a guaranteed prevention. Mine is generally now about 0.26, but in this weather you need to drink plenty of water, especially if you like a drink too. I had a session on beer and gin on Saturday and now have a small flare up. Caught in time thought no too bad. Been lingering on for nearly 6 weeks now, neproxen hasn't shifted it. Rung doctor and been prescribed colchicine so pick that up tonight.

I hardly drink (and I’m talking 1 or 2 units a month max) and eat little red meat or any other of the trigger foods. I do have a sweet tooth though and have been hammering the star mix lately so this is the only thing I could think of food wise. I am reasonably active, probably 3 miles walking 5 or 6 days a week and normally train bjj but can’t at the moment due to Covid. I’m 6’ and 14st 10 but stocky, carrying a little timber but not too bad. I drink 3-4 litres of water most days. Just worried I’m damaging the joint a bit now as it’s been so long. Hopefully the tablets will kick in soon as I’ve just started on them.

But monitor your own UA. Don’t rely on the doctors in these times, they’re just too slow. Have a look on amazon for a BeneCheck monitor. Get the UA sample sticks and a disposable skin-pricker kit. I use these and it’s pretty good to be honest. You can then use this as your own evidence to the doctor to get on to allopurinol if it’s always above 0.3. I’m on two 100mg allopurinol a day. I’ve read about people on three times that to control their UA.

Colchicine is what you’re on now to get rid of the UA crystals in your affected joint(s) - gout. Allopurinol is what you’ll be on for life to stop the UA levels causing gout.

Yes, sorry. I got a touch mixed up with the multi quotes. Colchicine is what you’re on now to get rid of the UA crystals in your affected joint(s) - gout. Allopurinol is what you’ll be on for life to stop the UA levels causing gout.
How long did colchicine take to work for you?

Started taking allopurinol after the second one which was quick behind the first one. It was that one that was stubborn to settle down.
