Gave up 19 years ago after drinking around 3 cans of Tennants super and roughly half a bottle of scotch a day for around 8 years I just woke up one day a said enough is enough and never touched a drop since, I would love to have a steady drinking habit BUT I know I will go back to my old habits so I will leave it well alone

As a point of balance, I have been nearly tee total for 20 years. I feel tired all the time.
I had a blood test four or five years ago. I am borderline hypothyroid. Actually a bit below the line, but not by much. My only major symptom was feeling tired all the time. My arms itched, but not to excess. I'm overweight, despite cutting out lots of fattening stuff and exercising a lot.

I'd gone to see a doctor some years before and I saw him write TALT in my notes. My feeling that he couldn't be bothered was spot on. Now, with a new doctor, I'm being monitored. I also experience low blood sugar for an unreasonable time after exercise. It eventually sorts itself out but that's being monitored as well. It's a wonder I've got any blood left.

You should not feel TALT.

Check for the symptoms of hypothyrodism and also low blood sugar. You'll immediately feel you've got both, so be a bit careful.

Yesterday had 4 weak cider

Shortly I’ll have some - 2-4 at a guess.

So 6-8 for this week which I think averages out online with NICE recommendations.

Jan has gone quite quick, not been at all hard, not a hint of a craving which I used to get or at least used to get pangs that a Friday or Saturday night was passing by without honouring it without a drink, but not remotely bothered.

The zero stuff sort of does the trick, its not 100 percent the same but I am happy with it.

Not saying I wont drink alcohol again but want to get out of that friday Saturday thing, maybe a few on Sunday, sod it , Thursday, well its near enough or have had a bad day so reach for a tin.

It’s moderation really - and we all know it.
Work hard play hard but balance is key.

Cutting down is no bad thing fewer drinking days a week is a good start then trying to get weekly levels to NIcE standards “on average”. I hate it if someone tried to make me stop for no apparent reason apart from oh you’ve had a drink don’t you think you should cut down? Those sorts of comments made to me actually make me go U turn on that suggestion.
Dr Wife parents aside from that.

I’m enjoying a can now at home with the wife. I might have a total of 2-4, no issue if I want more clearly but (6nations starts next weekend) a chilled out weekend again low consumption/healthy level job done.

Now to try and stop this sex addiction thing....

Think I gave up about 5+ years ago. I only miss a nice pint of cider but other than that it doesn’t bother me not drinking. SWMBO makes up
For it though laugh

Enjoyed reading this

Good to see so many rising above the temptation

Wish you all the very best for the future

Boozing heavily is without doubt a curse

From a very heavy drinker to having a few enjoyable drinks. 7 years and all is good

Keep the faith

I had a G&T at the parents on Sunday and thought afterwards (it was bloody nice) I just want more.

I've got to work harder on a total stop.

There have been several occasions when "have some more" came to mind but have managed to not go for it

This problem is so complicated as there aren't two of us alike, we all differ in so many ways and handle problems differently

Find it good that you enjoyed a G&T, it's the next ten G&Ts on top of it that are the problem

If I was thee and at times couldn't stop after reaching the sensible limit set by myself, help from someone would be my next move

The choices for any big drinkers are

Stop altogether

Drink a sensible amount

Seek help as there is much help out there and the problem isn't anything new, it's not a weakness to be a heavy drinker it's an addiction, a trap easily fallen into

Getting pissed feels great to many of us but.........

Keep fighting it, you will get there

Inspired by this thread I'm going to manage a dry week in a few hours time. First time for at least 6 months, and not been too tough, barring a couple of hankerings mid-week.

Then a busy weekend is going to mean drinks Friday, Saturday and Sunday, before getting back on the plan on Monday.

You’re going to have to stop having that first drink I’m afraid. There ain’t an easy option by the sounds.

Just a general query. Why does the Friday/Saturday/Sunday need alcohol rather than a non-alcoholic drink ?

Because it's been a whole week and I'm fluppin' GASPING!!! Don't make the good the enemy of the perfect or I'll fold! smile

More serious answer:

Tonight I'm raising a glass to Brexit. Whether that's celebratory or consolatory isn't for this thread.

Tomorrow night I've a night away with Mrs Jim, leaving the BabyJims behind, and if that's not worth a couple of pints I'm not sure what is.

Sunday night I'm having dinner with a mate I only see once or twice a year, and I reckon that's worth one or two as well.

Then Monday = back on plan.

ETA: the aim is not to become teetotal. I enjoy it too much for that. The aim is to drink approx. 75% less. Cut out the drinks that are merely habitual, and keep the drinks that (for me) genuinely improve an event/thing/get-together/doo.

Great, thanks - wasn't being nosy, just interested to better understand what triggers the need for alcohol. Cheers.....beer

Good points, I'd also add that just beware that your tolerance is probably falling through the floor.

I was in a right mess after falling off the wagon and drinking what was quite usual. thumbup
