I have an 87 y/o relative suffering from this, a few yrs ago she had a scan, diagnosis and report from a specialist. The whole process (from GP, to scan, to specialist and diagnosis) took months, pain started to improve so she took no further action. Once she's up and about walking helps but she siezes up 1st thing in the morning.

It's back with a vengeance, anyone have experience of physiotherapy for this condition? Will the physio be able to treat her without a referral?

I do, but from the physio side of the relationship... Some areas have self referral (we've recently started) but otherwise it'll need a GP to refer. I'd hope, given the history, that it would just take a phone call to arrange but she might need an appointment.

Treatment-wise, painkillers, heat and movement are the solution. A basic exercise to try is lying on your (Not you, I know..) back with your knees bent and feet flat, then twist your legs and pelvis from side to side. Try and do 10-20 twists 3-4 times a day, but it's not no pain no gain so start steady. Sometimes one side is worse than the other, in which case twist away from that side more than towards it.

And get them up and about and walking as much as comfortable.

(ETA I'm assuming lumbar ie low back....)

I'd thought about this, but isn't it some sort of snake oil, with very low quantities of active ingredients?

Spondylolysis is an old term and not used very much now in the UK. It’s basically osteoarthritis (wear and tear) of the spine. Depending on where it is (thoracic or lumbar) a physio might help. Referral to pain clinic for injections possibly too.

Unproven in many areas for which it's being touted.

I keep up to date on Epilepsy, where the more lurid headlines seem to claim its a cure all. It really isn't.

Same as Low GI diet to aid in seizure prevention, Headlines are that this is the way to go. Well, reading clinical papers, there is some evidence; if you are a rat in a small scale study.

I had a discussion with a guy last year, who was on a meat only diet. He had read that this cured just about everything. This was based on fairly anecdotal evidence of a professor switching his daughter to this diet to 'cure' her of an early onset arthritis.

I mentioned to him that I have an immune disorder that causes scar tissue to form on the knuckles, quite painful at times.

It's much better now, almost no issues, since I moved countries. Must be the warm weather right? He totally agreed, must be.

Okay, or is it the different fruit I'm eating, or swimming in the sea a lot, or eating more rice, or....etc...etc..? Or did it just get better - as this issue has a tendency to do for some people.

Anyone believing that this magic oil is a cure-all is a bit thick. Yeah but well my uncle's friend had X and it fixed it for him...did it really? Must work for every disease then!

Ahh, I've the original diagnosis letter now, not spondylosis but stenosis (anterior bulging disc)

I'll see what the physio dept says tomorrow.
