Have ordered the vitamin D test kit from the NHS lab shared by someone earlier. Do we need to stop taking daily supplements before test or it doesn't matter? Thanks

Why is she reluctant? Just tell her some random bloke on the Internet told her she should, I'm sure that'd work hehe

There are so many factors at play in a situation like that - nutrient status is the main reason (be it iron, D, B12, B9 etc etc etc as well as just a sh*t, highly processed diet), poor sleep, medications, stress and so on. But something so quick and cheap I cannot understand why someone would be reluctant to try it.

I had a situation with my father-in-law where he was tired all the time but wouldn't admit it (he said he was normal, I claimed him needing a 1 hour nap EVERY afternoon was not normal, blamed it on his medication. I offered to pay for his test under the proviso that if it came back low he would pay me back. He'd been isolating due to covid and his result was the lowest I've ever seen. We also found numerous other issues and he's really turned himself around which is great, but some people can be so stubborn.

I love helping people, I refuse to help people who refuse to help themselves, though. This can be challenging in practice though hehe

Today's John Campbell video on an Israeli study into vitamin D deficiency and COVID severity. Pretty convincing:

So I've just had the results of a test.
I had been taking 500iu daily in the winter months but upped that to 5,000iu for about 5 days a week for the last 2 months.....still got some 500iu tablets left so been taking 3 or 4 of them on the other days to use them up.
My result is 124 nmol/L so I'm happy with that.

With spring sun forecast over the next week are we at the time of year now we should stop taking daily Vitamin D supplements? Do you get enough from the sun at this time of year with just face and hands exposed?

Depends.
Half an hour a day is supposed to be enough but you won't be getting half an hour every day will you,not with British weather.
Plus if it's sunny you may well be using sun cream which prevents D absorption.
Personally I take every opportunity to get a few minutes of sun every time it's out, even if it's just having a brew in the garden when I come home from work,or a walk to the shop for a pint of milk.
If you're inside an office all day and live in a flat you may still be deficient.

If your shadow is longer than your height, you won't be making any. We can't make enough this time of year for optimum levels without supplements. It's hit and miss whether we can make any this time of year, we're right on the cusp of being able to, we could probably make some, but a pretty paltry amount. I'm going to keep supplementing for a while yet (not least because I came down with covid Saturday laugh )

I generally supplement full strength from September to end of March, reduce the dose a bit between March and end of April, and from then on I supplement very little (depending on whether and my activity levels) until September.

So I've been taking 2-3k IU per day throughout winter and reduced that over the last week or so to 1000 IU a 4-5 days per week. Cloudless skies forecast for the next week so I might get my shorts out to soak some goodness in.

I have a (potentially) stupid question…

Thanks to this thread I started to take supplements of Vitamin D and Magnesium. I have found these have improved by energy noticeably (I no longer have to have an afternoon nap and generally feel much better.

However I have found that alcohol now has a much greater and quicker effect on me. Would that be the magnesium causing my systems to work quicker or is it just coincidence?

I wouldn't have thought it'd make a difference in the average person. Are you quite a heavy drinker? I gather those who consume lots of alcohol are often lower in magnesium.

No not at all. I just read that magnesium is good for making all your bodily functions work at a more effective level so thought a few occasions I have drunk recently and had some adverse side-effects could be down to my body now being a temple rather than a crumpled heap of bricks biggrin

hehe I doubt it, old chum. Glad you generally feel more energetic too. Now I just need to convince people that a diet without processed foods is the way forwards too! hehe

I have just got over covid. Came down with a sore throat Saturday and got a positive PCR, only other symptom that day was a mild headache. Sunday headache had gone but coughing very occasionally, body a bit achy, pretty tired (had 3x30ish minute naps during the day!) and still sore throat. Felt considerably better Monday, Tuesday almost back to normal save a tiny bit more tired than normal, by today I feel 100%. Only a bit rough for 1 day, and even that really wasn't that bad.

Ah well, must just have lost my ability to hold my alcohol then!

Thanks - it’s genuinely changed my life (in the smallest sense) and will carry on taking them smile

I’ve been taking magnesium citrate for the last few weeks to try and help with IBSc. Took 200mg for the 1st 10 days, and now at 400mg (my total magnesium intake is now around 200-220% of RDA).

Not real improvement in my IBS, and no noticeable change in my tolerance to alcohol!

If anything it can make IBS worse, I have never said it would help with IBS. IBS can be caused by a huge number of factors, anything from food intolerances, previous infections, poor diet, bacterial overgrowth, medications (omeprazole etc) and countless other things. If I'm looking to sort someone's IBS then there are supplements that can usually help even without looking into the cause, but the cause and diet must be investigated for the best possible outcome smile

One thing is for certain, IBS is a term often used to say "you have a bowel issue and we don't know why". There is always a reason why, it's just finding it, and then solving it.

I have a stupid question... Well they say the only stupid questions are ones that aren't asked, but this is definitely stupid laugh

Over winter i've been tired for a lot of the day, and can be knackered by 8pm even though i've had a decent length sleep the night before. I've been taking vitamin D tablets and it's helped a lot, but I was wondering about the doses.

I have 12.5ug tablets which is 500iu, which after a bit of research is a small ish dose considering i'm very white and live in England and we've just had winter.

Is it just as simple as taking 2/3 a day, or do I need higher dose tablets and keep to 1 a day?
