Serious question, albeit rather amusing topic, I guess.

I had COVID back in June of last year, I assume the delta variant. Ever since then I've noticed that certain smells.. are completely different. Namely excrement and I guess, farts? Stick with me, honestly.

Even now, any sort of 'poo' (even pig farm stuff) smells the same. It just smells like.. chemicals. Not unpleasant, just the sort of GCSE Chemistry lab sort of smell. I thought I was going mad initially, but it is still happening to this day and I can't think of another catalyst that could've triggered it. For the record, my taste appears absolutely fine and as a general rule 95% of 'smells' appear to be their normal, pre COVID versions.

I'm utterly perplexed, anybody ever come across this?

Edit: I don't make a habit of sniffing st, but I live rurally, and also after doing the business.. it lingers in the bathroom, I'm only human!

Edit Edit: Just Googled it and found a Reddit post with a ton of replies reporting the same. So strange! Always the same sickly sweet chemical sort of stench. I'm going to assume it's permanent, I doubt anybody has any answers.

I’m the same, I had covid last June and lost all sense of smell until earlier this year but everything smells acrid, like you say, like a chemical smell.

Got covid again three weeks ago and my smells gone again.

Just to add, Beconase helped me get my smell back last time.

Tested positive on Sunday afternoon. Only tested as we had a pack of LFTs left and I'd had a cold since Thurs that hadn't shifted. Turns out it isnt a cold.

Got to say, this omicron is absolutely nothing like the covid I got back in Mar 2020. That knocked me on my arse. This, I honestly thought was a cold.

Feeling about 80% better today. Hopefully back to normal tomorrow.

I hope this is the future of covid variants!

I had Covid in July last year and my smell and taste are not okay. I get the occasional tempting smell of something strong like a closed jar of coffee suddenly opened. But most of the time I have nothing or as you say a weird toilet type smell.

It comes in waves and is particularly bad at the moment, to the extent that I couldn’t eat dinner yesterday as it tasted like toilet. (The food was good, it was just me)

I could cope with the no taste thing, but the foul taste is starting to get to me.

I tested positive for COVID for first time last Monday after someone suggested my symptoms the night before were like the 2 times he has it. I am hardly ever amongst people these days so could only have got it out the previous Thursday night in a nightclub. I worked through the lockdowns in a people facing role and never got it. It's really floored me but only took 2 days off last week due to high temp, headache, eye pain and aching body etc. Felt ok Thursday and Friday but over the weekend it's turned into a head cold. Sneezing, snattering and feeling yuck. Brain fog and general can't be bothered so it's hard to concentrate on work.

My team have been amazing and friends etc have kept my spirits up and larder full. I live alone which I'm finding lonely at times but thankfully my partner isn't sick. Previously got it so probably has immunity etc.

Have lots of plans this weekend but still testing positive so I'm probably not going to risk it which will only make me more down. I've too much time to worry about things at the mo.

Same here. Farts / poo and, egg especially smell different. Scrambled eggs are ok but I don’t like the ‘new’ smell of fried or boiled.

In local food shop tonight some bloke was complaining he had been off work with it after tested positive a few days ago and still goes shopping and could have at least worn a mask .
I might have to go back to wearing mask in shops ,it seems to be a free for all and only a question of time until I get covid again

I think there is loads of that going on now. I never understood why the govt removed the requirement to isolate whilst positive. But once they did, this was inevitable.

Can you link the reddit post please? I posted on here last year that since having covid any sort of poo (and my local indian on cooking day - worryingly) smells the same - not chemically like you describe, but more like popcorn. In fact, if i've had a few drinks and then eat popcorn i have to remind myself i am infact eating popcorn otherwise i gag. I tend to avoid it nowadays. For six months since i initially had covid *every* bowel movement smelled exactly the same (popcorn type smell) and since then its 50/50 so has improved. Wierdly sewage and as i say, my local indian (which i don't use any more) still smell like popcorn. I can't remember what actual sewage smells like, haven't smelt it in a long time. I had covid Jan 2021.

Sounds like you could make a fortune as a sort of special forces sewer worker. Dealing with only the nastiest blocked sewers and such.

While old hands were throwing up, you’d feel like you were in a cinema foyer. hehe

It is certainly on the rise again, well anecdotally it seems to be around here anyway (Kent). Lots of people I know seem to have it at the moment. Add that to the restrictions being lifted regarding self isolation and yes shops and workplaces will be full of people well enough to walk around spreading it.

Yep - I kind of get the sweetness too. Now you say pop corn I don't think I'll stop thinking that.

In terms of links, there's a few - this is a bit older but has over 270 comments - https://www.reddit.com/r/COVID19positive/comments/...

There are a few more examples if you search for poo / excrement smells funny after covid etc.

Reassuring to know I'm not the only one, anyway.

Thanks. Frying onion/garlic has a similar quality, but not quite. I think, nay hope, that's what the local indian takeaway are up to.

Managed to avoid catching the virus up until now. Felt dodgy yesterday morning and got progressively worse through the day, chills, pounding headache, ache, temp in the low 40s. Really knocked me on my arse.

Got a bit snotty and have a little bit of a cough today but much better than yesterday. Weird it's taken this long, been on planes, worked throughout the lockdowns, had nights out at Christmas when numbers were sky high.

Same her, I've avoided catching it but felt ill over the weekend, positive test. I know of 8 others who have it too. Not too ill but haven't been out since Sunday, waiting for the clear result.

Day 20 for me. Still have a nasty cough and get knackered quickly. Washing the car had me literally on my knees.

That's harsh. I seem to have avoided a cough nearly all together. I keep getting a pain localised in the left of my chest which is normal according to the NHS Web page but I reckon nearly every symptom under the sun can be attributed to COVID.

I'm really hoping to be back to normal by the weekend I've tried to keep away from the rest of the family which won't be as easy once the wife and kids are home.....

Hope you feel better soon.

Myself and wife and newborn twins just coming out the other side of it. Mild flu but took a while to shake off without any sleep!
