Anyone had a hair transplant?
Discussion
Hey guys,
Been following this thread recently because in the last to 2/3 weeks I've noticed thinning and loss of hair on top, not sure what is causing it atm. But it's starting to get me down quite abit and as usual family members are non-supportive.
Anyway has anyone here had an hair transplant also a type 1 diabetic, if so I have a few questions:-
Can type 1s have one safely?
Did it effect your BGLs in anyway?
Where did you get it done?
Costs?
Do you have to stay on any types of medication before/after the procedure?
Did it work?
I'm thinking of starting Biotein as apparently if helps hair growth, has anyone tried it? Is there anything else one can take to help it come back, I'm 48 btw.
thanks

Hi guys,
Can anyone recommend me a hair transplant clinic for those with Afro hair, I’ve been looking online and looking at reviews but it’s sometimes hard to tell if the reviews are real.
I’m of Caribbean/Indian decent so my hair is not quite Afro, neither is it straight. So I’m seeking recommendations rather than just chancing it. I know people that have been to Turkey to get it done but not in the UK.
Regards A

I started another thread, but reading the last 3 years of this one has made me revive it.
Some of these results (well all actually) are amazing.
I'm approaching 50 and have had thinning hair all my life, now it's fairly bad at the front and temples. I would consider hair transplants, but I am particularly interested to hear of anyone who has had them done, who in hindsight, wouldn't have bothered? Have they been good, but now after a few years, has started to fall out again?
How long did it take to start looking 'normal' again? I'm thinking around 3 months? Would you advise going shorter now, to lesson the effect of going shaved for a few months post op?

Not had but considered one. I think you've to give 12+ months to get the finished look so to speak. You'll look like you haven't been ran over by a lawnmower after a couple of weeks then it's common for the hair in the transplanted follicles to fall out before it regrows. Some of these results (well all actually) are amazing.

Success depends on a few factors, not least the skill of the surgeon, followed by the quality of your donor area. It's recommended to get and stay on finisteride.
I fall in and out of the idea of having it done. A mate got a hair system aka a wig. Funnily I don't think I could but reckon they're more for the bold as a coot type, but his looks bloody good.

Why do you think it would fall out again? Some of these results (well all actually) are amazing.

The results can really start to show even around the seven month mark (in my experience), but it won't be final until up to 12 months.
I would advise "...going shorter now, to lesson the effect of going shaved for a few months post op". Otherwise, if you pop into work two weeks later with a stubbly head, people may ask questions. It'd be even more difficult if you were pretty much bald on top, because after two weeks you'd have a noticeable hairline again. Though, that eventually disappears temporarily as the newly planted hair sheds, then it's back to normality for the next five months or so until the new hair starts to grow in.
Thanks guys, I was only asking about long term results to see if this was a temporary (i.e. a couple of years) thing and then they started losing hair again?
I see some places do the long hair FUE, which means they don't shave your head, I'm going to investigate these as at least I'll look 'normal' during the process, although no doubt it will cost significantly more.

Wow, what a difference.
I have always had a high hairline, used to get slapped on the forehead at school. "Slap head!" Found a picture when I was about 24, big forehead! It is funny because people say now "You are losing your hair mate, just shave it off" I say "Losing? Losing! I never had it in the first place!'
Now it has gone further, but I have loads of hair everywhere else.
If I had the spare cash (hair and flights, I don't live in Europe) I would do it.
Unfortunately being a short arse I can't hide this as from front or side on i have a great hairline and thickness. But top is gone. Am I better to wait a while before going for transplant?
Alot of my loss I think was actually from scratching as I have eczema and this is the reason I cannot go for a full shave it off.

Have you considered using medication to slow it down / stop / possibly regrow hair?
With any surgery you need to get to a stable position first.

does hair loss ever stabilise??
Total unknown surely. A pal of mine started going big time in his mid 20s. What's left, almost a full covering in the right mood, has now been totally static for well over 20 years.

You have a natural hairline which is the thing that would put me off having a hair transplant. A lot of them look daffy.Alot of my loss I think was actually from scratching as I have eczema and this is the reason I cannot go for a full shave it off.
I presume a decent hair surgeon has dealt with others with eczema so they might have some ideas after having a look.
You might have a full thatch waiting to spring back.

re grow back its been like this a long time.
full thick tbh pretty great hair at the sides but im 90% sure I have done the damage over the years scratching my head when there was a very bad spell with my eczema

Sorry what do you mean natural hairline puting you of from having it?
It's always the restored hairline at the front that winds up looking a bit suspect to me in many cases. I'm sure there's a load of good surgeons who do a fine job, but there's a bunch that look like blatant hair transplants to me. I'm on way baldness wise, and it's all at the front, but I can't face winding up with a stupid hairline, or destroying my hormonal balance with drugs trying to keep the hair, so nature will take its course.
If the front was intact like yours and it was a case of filling in further back, I'd be a lot more inclined to consider it.
In Dec 2019 I got a hair transplant with GetHair in Turkey. Not including flights it cost 3200 quid and I think that was for 3500 hairs.
I have to say I am very happy with it. It did take a good 12/18 months for it to grow back normally though. And it also hurt quite a bit. Both during the op and afterwards.
