I've had a TIA/ mini stroke, any changes I should be making?
Discussion
I had a mini early one in 2017. I was 49.
With hindsight I felt a bit off...had couple of friends to stay and just didn't really feel like staying out late...
A week or so before I had cut my leg up avoiding some stupid Chinese tourists, stacked my bike at maybe 5kph.
Didn't think too much of it. Then...started to have trouble reading, just for a second or so. Thought I needed new glasses or was tired.
That got worse and then I suddenly couldn't type - it was just gibberish - for a few seconds at a time.
Things got a bit worse then as my wife was going into labour, I wasn't able to sign a consent form; I just could not think how to spell my name!
Saw a neurologist the next week and straight into an MRI. This showed a white spot in one hemisphere. Damage caused by a blood clot from a mini-stroke. The issues I was experiencing were very short epileptic events.
Question was why? Never been overweight, 120/80 blood pressure every time I've ever had it taken, heart rate around 54bpm, cholesterol maybe a bit high which is probably genetic, capable of jumping up and running 20km, gym, never smoked, moderate drinker (have never drunk on my own or rarely at home) etc...
Sticky blood! Clotting factor was way up.
Again in retrospect I could understand it - always healed up very quickly from cuts etc. Now, I'm on blood thinners its really odd to see blood running..its a lighter colour as well.
Anyway I'm stuck with the epilepsy but hopefully the thinner will reduce the chance of another stroke.
Epilepsy is another story - sat here typing this with a titanium shoulder, bone missing from hip..... I really wouldn't recommend it.

Funny you should say that jdw, I used to give blood but have up when it got to the point where they struggled to get 1/2 pint out. Sticky blood
I've had a few comments before when giving blood samples. Once the nurse said' thats very sticky' whilst swirling it around the vacutainer 'look how its sticking to the sides'.I really wish I had done something about it then.
If you are not, you should!
Even a low dose aspirin daily might be enough to save your life.
Things went to pot on Saturday, sadly. 11am, I was cleaning eggs (we have a lot of hens and ducks) in preparation to sell to the local allotment shop. With no warning I became incredibly faint, so stepped back from the sink. Moments later, according to S, my legs collapsed under me, and I was out of it. A 999 call was made, my first memory was 3 paramedics in our front room trying to get anything other than codst out of me, to little to no avail.
What I describe now is from what I was told, rather than memory. I was blue lighted to hospital, and supposedly I had many nurses and the like try to get sense out of me, with no joy. I had a CT scan, relieving nothing, followed by an MRI scan which again, showed nothing of concern. The next steps are that I'm booked in for numerous heart scans, a neck scan (WTF?!) and some other tests, which have done little else but to serve to confuse me.
Right now I am finding this fking scary as st, like my body is failing me without reason.
stting it doesn't come close.

Sorry to hear it's gone pear-shaped. I may be able to shed light on the neck scan - I've had that done, it's to check for something which I can't remember the name of (it's a word which is commonly used for something else) but is cholesterol build-up in your carotid arteries which, if bad, can obv reduce the flow of blood to the brain. Mine was done as part of a cholesterol study which I took part in, not due to an illness. What I describe now is from what I was told, rather than memory. No idea what's wrong with you and I'm not going to try and guess, but I hope you've been knocking the liquid and gaseous stimulants on the head?
Really sorry to hear that. I know from experience how scary it is when you’re facing the unknown.
It was an ultrasound scan on my neck that diagnosed my stroke. I’d managed to tear the artery in my neck and the bleed clotted and blocked it. Took them a while to figure it out though. I went into hospital on the Friday and it wasn’t until the Monday they finally figured it out.
I know there isn’t much anyone can say at the moment to make you feel better, but the fact that you can still post on here tells me it could have been a lot worse (not making light of it though, obviously) so try and think about that and what you can change to try and minimise the risk of a really big one hitting in the future.

That's really useful to know RE the neck scan Cappo, cheers for the heads up. RE the consumption of alcohol and nicotine, the answer is that I've managed to reduce these both, circa 90%. It's not perfect, but for me that is a result! No idea what's wrong with you and I'm not going to try and guess, but I hope you've been knocking the liquid and gaseous stimulants on the head?
Neck scan will be an ultrasound on the cartoid arteries, them being blocked or made narrow by something (plaque, probably).
If you need the thing cleaning out then you'll end up with a fine ol' neck scar from the surgery I'm afraid! Alas the alternative is worse!
All the best, and get that bevvy knocked on the head!

This thread reassures me that the people of Pistonheads are amongst the the very best the internet has to offer.
I'm feeling like utter total st, like the wheels have well and truly fallen off, and I'm getting nothing but kindness off internet strangers. The thank you is one I mean.
The important question mind, which one of you is going to adopt Sarah to look after her?

Further to what someone else mentioned, I found this today: https://elemental.medium.com/coronavirus-may-be-a-...
Things aren't going too well then. You're in good hands with the NHS and I wish you all the best. You have shared plenty on here about your life and you sound like a good egg, with a great sexy Sarah supporting you.
I didn't realise you had a heart attack last year though. Sorry to hear of this latest episode and hopefully they will find the issue quickly.
