You know you are getting on a bit when you don't have a clue what this means.

Those were the days cloud9

And the best thing about it was you didn't even have to sort it out yourself.

I used to be in this bracket, but can now get off to sleep at 20.30 most nights of the week at least.

Things I changed...

No notifications on my phone (except from people in my favorites list)
No social media / news after 19.30
1 hour of outside exercise a day walk/run
Don't eat after 18.30
No booze except at weekend.
Set the alarm for the same time each day (for me 05.40)
I'd also recommend a Fitbit or similar for sleep tracking.
I sometimes take herbal sleep aids or melatonin as prescribed by my Dr
A hot bath before bed or sauna.
No evening exercise.
Make sure your bedroom is dark and at around 19c
Daily meditation also help.
I don't have any work stuff on my phone either, removed this years ago.

Now I'm getting around 8-8.5 hours of good quality sleep each night. Hope these tips help!

Put a few of these into practice last night.

Installed some blackout blinds on a skylight, warm bath at 10 and no devices, bought a room thermometer, setup sleep app / routine reminder on apple watch. Ate early and no further snacking

Now just going to keep it up consistently - felt much more rested than usual. No devices / TV past 10 is my main one - i can stay up very late watching videos and doing nothing much of any use

Got into bed at 2230. Fell asleep fairly quickly and then woke up around midnight.

Wide awake since. I’m at at 0500 for work.

I hate earlies. Roll on Monday night when I can catch up on my sleep!

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit

1.5 hours sleep then in from 5am !

That would kill me (I mean really kill as in death). How do you survive ?

I'm up and wide awake, but then I am on a 12 hour night shift and will have to set an alarm to be up in time for the GP today.

Are you worrying about something ? I have things I can think about that put me to sleep, like trying to work out how gravity works, or how to test something. Nothing that really matters but complex enough to divert me, I soon drop off. Reading when I wake up halfway through sleeping between night shifts always does it too. Something that occupies all my attention on a single thing that has no relevance. I also sometimes get into a cycle of drift of and wake, then drift off and wake that can only be broken by getting up for 30 minutes.

The real killer for sleep for me, is worrying about something.

Honestly no idea how I survive! It’s normal for me though on an early shift to get a hour or two though. I worry about over sleeping which is strange as I’ve only done it twice since I had a paper round at 13 (now 31).

I’ll sleep well tonight as long as I don’t have a nap when I get home. If I nap I’m fked. Always have been. Parents said that if I slept for five minutes I’d be awake for hours later. It’s the same now.

Strange thing is though come sleeping after nights I have to set an alarm not to oversleep! I’ll get home just after seven. Stick my eye mask and ear plugs in and I’m done until 7pm. Might get up for a piss but straight back to sleep.

Today I wish I drank coffee though!

Well it worked! Got into bed at 2000 and woke up at 0515 just before my alarm went off. Slept like a log!

Nature never intended for humans to be reading from tablets and screens late at night. Drop the phone/ tablet habit in the evenings and perhaps read a real book.

I love sleep but struggle with it at times. I have some audiobooks I listen to which I know very well which sometimes work, I know them well enough I am not thinking about it. I also read before I sleep now, which seems to help, and I put my phone on do not disturb.

There is a pretty good episode of the Joe Rogan podcast where he speaks to a sleep expert - episode 1109 with Matthew Walker.

3am for me, up at 10am usually, don't start work till midday.

I did make the error of going to bed at 11am and woke up wide awake at the ungodly hour of 07.30am.

It's a dead world at that time, the horror of breakfast telly, never again { shudder]

I used to work night shifts, leaving home at 8pm and getting home about 7:30am.

One time I got home and quietly got into bed, the wife was still fast asleep. I awoke at 4pm, turned over and the wife was still there, fast asleep.
