plus I make sure my sleep hygiene is on point too.
You know you are getting on a bit when you don't have a clue what this means. And the best thing about it was you didn't even have to sort it out yourself.
My late Mum moved into a residential home in 2019 when she was 97 and they did all that, but it wasn't cheap!

Raising your body temperature before bed is not a good idea if you want to get to sleep.
It actually is. A hot bath for instance make the body reduce its core temperature which is favoured for sleep. This is covered along with many other interesting sleep information in Matthew Walker's 'Why we Sleep'. I'd recommend this to anyone, it will change your whole perspective of sleep and its importance.Another early shift and another night of not sleeping! Not helped that I felt run down after nights (87 hours worked in eight days in a row). Friday I had to have a nap in the afternoon.
Monday I was up until 4am and woke up at 9am. Hoped I would be tired this evening but nope. Fell asleep and then girlfriend started eating something stupidly loud and woke me up at 1am. Wide awake since. (She’s now fast asleep!).

When I worked 06:30 to 14:00, I tended to have a snooze 14:30 to 15:00 then a proper sleep at night. You might be in the 'fight off sleep' mindset until bed then crash which for me, means when I wake later, its harder to drop off again as I would become wide awake and need to get up for half an hour.

Any ideas on why I sleep for a couple of hours, wake up and then can’t get back to sleep?
Same thing as normal. In bed at 2200. Fall asleep quickly. Woke up at 0100 and wide awake.
It’s only on early shifts. Lates and nights I’ll sleep for eight/nine hours.
I think it might be the mindset that you know you're going to be up early, so your brain won't settle.Same thing as normal. In bed at 2200. Fall asleep quickly. Woke up at 0100 and wide awake.

I have the opposite on earlies. On days or days off I can be in bed and asleep by 11pm if i've not had a lie in that day.
On earlies I lie tossing and turning until around 2am then I fall asleep for an hour and half 'til my alarm goes of at 3.30am. I then feel alright until about 9am and then feel knackered all day.
It only happens when i'm on earlies, I can only think it's me "worrying" (I say worry, I don't worry at all, i've never overslept and I enjoy my job) that i'm up at a silly hour so can't relax.
