I’m at 3 weeks of a heavy cold now - getting to be a complete pain in the ar$e

I feel like it’s on the way out then boom, it’s back. Mainly a head cold with the occasional dizziness and at times I could fall asleep stood up. I should have bought shares in tissues as I’ve used boxes and boxes of the things!

My 14 year old has it as well and is at week 4 - fortunately his similar symptoms seem slightly milder than mine but it’s starting to get him down not sleeping.

My wife had a mild cold before both of us a few weeks back and has missed this one altogether so far. She isn’t long recovered from cancer so her immune system isn’t fully up to full strength - odd that she hasn’t caught it given it’s like a hospital ward in the house at the minute. Perhaps the last cold gave her some immunity?

Is anyone else getting bad headaches with this, mainly at night? Or is that something different for me to worry about?

I don’t think anything is off the table with this. My sinuses were blocked really badly, causing ear, tooth and headaches. I’m a few months clear of it, but still needed some prescription strength nasal decongestant for the past few weeks, as my sinuses are still causing problems now.

I had a week of bad headaches which have thankfully eased now

I’ve also had slight heart palpitations which don’t feel great - they have subsided but not totally gone

Anybody had something that's just a snotty nose? But dry bogeys and quite often bloody bogeys?

I have it, my 4yr old son has it but his nose is a lot bloodier, he also has some sort of ear infection that produces smelly wax.

My other half has been ill for a week - dizzy and a permanent headache. No other symptoms. I reckon it's some sort of inner ear infection, but not sure. She's not seen a doctor on the basis that 'I'll be better tomorrow'. A week later.... (a week in bed).

Four weeks In today since initial onset of symptoms, raging cold, savage cough, aches and pains, sore throat, radioactive st coming out of my nose most of the day.

This subsided slightly after two weeks before round two arrived which I’m almost certain is a result of having to work outside on this shyte weather. This time gained white spots in back of throat so it’s clearly developed into tonsillitis and have breathlessness and nearly given myself a hernia from coughing so much. Pissed off.

No bed here, self employed so it’s pop max dose of ibuprofen and paracetamol and crack on. Probably why it’s not getting any better…

Just found this thread whilst trying to understand what's wrong with me! I'm day 8 and barely left my bed in that time. Major chills and horrible fever if I don't stay fully topped up on ibuprofen and have no energy when I'm at my best.
Otherwise healthy mid 40s male.
Onto 2nd type of antibiotics from GP but doesn't feel like having any impact so far. Some variant of pneumonia I believe.
Just to update on off chance it might steer someone else as the more I've learned lyme disease can present lots of weird symptoms and doesn't seem to be super well known but tick numbers are increasing rapidly in the UK.

After more GP visits suspected a chest infection I eventually ended up in hospital with suspected sepsis. I must have had every scan and blood test going over space of a couple of days whilst they tried to figure out what was happening. IV antibiotics got me back well enough to go home and a few days later a more complex blood test result came back to report lyme disease as probable root cause. I do live and walk in "tick" areas but I've always taken precautions and have no knowledge of being bitten for many years.
I'm feeling mostly back to normal now and glad I kept going to GP and pushing.

My wife had had a cold for 2 weeks. Coughing / sore throat etc
I’ve had it about 10 days. Luminous snot, quality.
I never get colds..
Both bank holiday weekends written off.
Going abroad in 2 weeks, it had better be gone by then!

Every time we’ve been away recently (last 18 months) another virus ensues rolleyes

Now trying to steer clear of airports and crowded places for the foreseeable tbh (airports, cinemas, interior restaurants) luckily we’re based mid europe and enjoying lots of car based holidays and hotels with villas in the grounds.. sounds extravagant but removal of flights mitigates the costs quite well.

Haven’t a clue , my wife and I had this so called coughing bug for most of December. Hers faded out, mine got worse. Boxing Day she called, NHS 111 who sent a para straightaway, she did every test you could think of. This is not good news, straight to emergency critical care unit at RBH Reading. Streptococcal pneumonia, Sepsis, left lung full fluid, heart rate 50% above normal ( no wonder ). I was on my way out. This was seriously scary.
Plugged into computers, drips, everything you can think of. I was just flat on my back for 9 days. Those people there are just wonderful, they saved my life.
Been moved to the normal ward, getting better, but can not get out of bed unaided. Not sure how long I will be here. Next will be re hab.
I will keep you posted.
Fyikesk me - you lucky bd - well done your missus - get well slow and steady - I have found rushing this 'horrible bug just sets you back again.
I thought I would give you guys an update.
After the time in intensive care I spent two months in the main ward, lots of scans blood transfusion, ongoing treatment. Finally well enough to be transferred to the rehab ward of a small community hospital. This is where I spent time in the gym getting my legs working again and learning how to walk again.
After a month I was finally released from captivity and allowed home. The occupational therapist arranged a fantastic after care package. I had a state of the art hospital bed fitted in my dining room, together with other equipment to suite my needs while I lived down stairs. They also supplied one of those luxury reclining/tipping arm chairs for the lounge. I had a carer call in three times a day, a physio every few weeks. Being at home with my wife and getting all this attention was amazing and did wonders for my mental as well as physical health. In a few weeks I put on a stone,( thanks to my wife`s cooking and Indian take away`s ) was walking around the house with my 4 wheeled walker.
As I was getting so fit they arranged for an extra bannister to be fitted up the stairs. Very quickly I was able to get upstairs easily and safely. I had my first proper shower in FOUR months. They even fitted some grab handles by the bath. My progress has been quite amazing, I`m out and about, started driving again, life is almost back to normal. My care package has ended, all the NHS equipment has been returned, my dinning room and my home is back to normal. Remember in February I could not even put a leg out of bed let alone stand up and walk. I thought I would be an invalid for the rest of the year. Its all thanks to those amazing doctors, nurse`s and everyone else at the NHS.

Snip -

Phew !

Thanks for the update - the original message in February was 60 shades of shocking. So glad to hear you are going in the right direction, and quickly too!

Fair play for documenting the help you got from the NHS. Between them and your missus you've had some tile support.

Something tells me you are a good patient too? I can picture you throwing yourself into recovery and rehab. It's just how you come across, an inspiration.

That’s great news, thanks for updating and glad it’s all positive news. Have to admit I was quite nervous when you went silent, given what you’d disclosed about how serious things were.

Just found this thread, my son brought this up from Brighton when he came home as a Xmas gift, and both my wife and I subsequently contracted it (although not as bad as some on here) .

Anyway it lasted over 4 weeks but eventually tailed off.

However since then I have suffered from breathlessness at any sudden exertion (eg going up the stairs fast) and my heart races. Saturday I washed the car and I had to stop several times for a breather FFS.

I am ok on a flat walk, but hills tire me very easily.

Last year I was cycling 20 mile rides and walking out with a camera bags three or four times a week.

Now I’m like some 80 yr old with one lung.

Anybody else experiencing anything similar?

I think it’s probably doctor time, it’s not going away by itself…..

What you are experiencing is very similar to me before I was hospitalised.
As you say, it’s doctor time. Get your lungs and heart thoroughly checked out.

We contacted our in February and your symptoms and remaining effects remained for a while but a watered down version, last to go was the cough and the very last was phlegm that only made itself apparent once my head hit the pillow last thing, now, 4 mths after initial contraction, it’s all gone but that last bit held on forever!

Thanks for the nice words, I’m quite flattered. I was just happy to get so much treatment and attention. Those lovely people had good bed side manners, they convinced me that I would get better.
Particularly the physio in the gym. She pushed me and made me knackered, saying you can do this and will do more. I recently sent her a letter detailing my recovery and how grateful I was for her efforts. She replied, was over the moon to get a feed back from an ex patient.

Did you find you were choking with the phlegm at night and couldn’t sleep?

I’ve hardly slept the past 3 nights with the choking phlegm, tried more pillows (6 in a pyramid at one point) but nothing worked, I was keeping the OH awake so ended trying to sleep sitting up on the sofa.

Anything tips would be greatly appreciated, it’s really starting to get me down
