Docs prescribed me this as apparently another medication for a completely unrelated consition I'm on, combined with the "serious amount I drink" (reported to him as 3 bottles per week), can attack the stomach lining. I've been on a slightly lower dose of the other for a few months with no issue and rarely have stomach issues ever, once in a blue moon some acid reflux treated with low grade stuff. Such side effects are not listed online and considered "heard of it, but rare" by another person quite experienced.
Lansoprazole though was treated with suprise and alarm by two people who know about it, is generally considered a last resort for those who really need it and shouldn't be played around with by those who don't.
Thoughts?
There is no real alarm in being treated with proton pump inhibitors (lansoprazole, omeprazole, esomprazole etc). It sounds like it it being used prophylactically alongside an NSAID (ibuprofen, naproxen etc) to prevent gastric and duodenal ulcers. NSAIDs will ruin your stomach if used long term and the lansoprazole just protects it. Many years ago I did suffer with reflux and adapted my diet etc and never thought about it anymore, then in 2021, I had a heavy meal and some alcohol and went to bed. At about 1 am I woke up and honestly thought I was dying, I couldn't breathe, it was truly horrific, each gasp got harder but I went out in the cold and it got manageable.
Eventually I went to A&E, they diagnosed me having Covid, the then said it was a pulled lat muscle, then a liver infection, then costchondtritis. They then proceeded to dose me up with Naproxen.
Between bouts of pain and fearing my pending harping it, I'd googled the various things including the waking up, it came back as severe reflux, apparently the airways close to protect the lungs, there is a simple test to confirm this. After seeing this they gave me a big dose of PPI but of course what they didn't tell me is it can take 24 hrs.
They sent me on my way, luckily I found a Pharmacy on the way home and grabbed most of their Gaviscon products, a few hours later I was feeling much better. I never not have Gaviscon type stuff in the house now and never eat or drink less than 3 hrs before bed.

I gather with PPI the body can become addicted, in the sense when you try to stop there can be a big swing back/overreaction (told to me by a physician). My wife used it too (professional singers complaint, only thing that worked) and the docs were reluctant for her to keep taking it long term. Both were surprised it was prescribed so liberally.
For someone with no reported stomach issues I'm wondering if it's something I want to play with, I generally don't want to resort to dugs unless I have to.
The doc might have been a bit of a prat though, he gave me a lecture that my alcohol should be "drink a little every day rather than binging at the weekend". I get why that is, but whoever dreamt it up might want to ingest a few beers themselves and understand why people drink in the first place before trying to inflict idiotic rules on it.

drug in question isn't an NSAID. I take a couple of naproxen infrequently for gout.

Doc prescribed this as I was feeling an odd bubble feeling in my chest for weeks on end.
So it was added to the pile of daily pills I take for having had a heart attack back in 2009.
Been on them since last Summer as they keep turning up in my repeat prescription.
The bubbling feeling went soon after taking them but I have not had a review plus, as others have mentioned, it's nigh on impossible to see a GP these days.
Over the past months I've been suffering from almost constant wind. So bad that I have virtually stopped all social life and lately has me wondering if it's this Lansoprazole.
Anyone else had the same problem?

I've been taking omeprazole since 2018 though have lowered the dosage myself over the last year (taking 20mg instead of the 40mg prescribed). I also take additional B12 and Magnesium to protect against hypomagnesaemia and B12 deficiency (known side effects). Main issues I have are the odd episode of diarrhea but probably a small price to pay to not get another chest pain/gasping episode (as another poster described above it is pretty intense).
Amazing how many people are on this. Very common.
I remember being prescribed it for a couple of weeks. It did relieve the symptoms so they just said carry on with it.
As a few above, must be 20 years ago now. Zero interest in actually finding out what the underlying issue is. More drugs is an easy fix.

Been on it about 25 years, stopped for a couple of years, didn't notice any deterioration, no reflux, no heartburn, thought I had it cracked.
Then started to swallow bits of meat in particular that were getting stuck in the oesophagus, not pleasant.....,ended up with another camera down to have a looksee, oesophagus had narrowed due to acid reflux when sleeping, now on it until I snuff it....

It horrible isn't it. I chew the hell of things nowadays but you still get the odd occasion when you forget and its pretty grim (either the tablet or the chewing). On one occasion I thought I was dying on holiday - for hours. Making myself sick resolved it in minutes but hardly ideal. I take a tablet once every few weeks. In my case red wine and alcohol I think is the main culprit.
