We are planning to get a Labrador pup however when we went to the kennels today my wife has suffered an allergic reaction. She has had dogs most of her life and was fine until our son was born almost 5 years ago (funnily enough both me and my son have suffered allergies in the past but are fine with Labradors). Is there anything we can do to overcome this allergy?

Thanks,

Mike

Well your wife could go through a desensitization program, she'd have to ask her doctor about it. Some breeds are meant to be better for allergy sufferers but don't be tempted by the labradoodles etc, they say they are allergy free but there is no guarantee. They can end up with a lab coat more than a poodle coat.

Poodles are claimed to be good for allergy sufferers because they don't moult, however as you don't know what your wife reacted to this isn't guaranteed to solve the problem.

A Labradoodle breeder would know regarding the coat.
Check for no undercoat, if no undercoat, no shedding.
Apart from Poodles, Salukis and Afghans do not have undercoats. Probably a few others too.

My whippet has no undercoat but he still sheds.

I had a similar problem and found several hypoallergenic breeds and after researching got a Havanese for the kids and have had no problems.
