I suspect that, for most people, 2k times in the low 8-minutes are perfectly achievable with just a bit of focus on technique.

If you're just after getting fitter, I suppose times don't really matter, but if you want to see how quickly you can go, get your technique right and I think most would see massive improvements.
When I first started rowing many many years back, I had a lot of help from our gym manager on my technique and my times massively improved (certain that I was putting in around 6m30 2k times, definitely well under 7m).

At the moment I'm still getting back into it; did a mini-gym triathlon at lunch - 5k row, 13.5k bike and then a 3k run. The run was quite sedate (legs were shot) as it turns out I put in a pb for the 5k row - previous attempt was 20:56, today it was better paced and i put in a 20:39. Not a big improvement, but still welcome. Sub 20 minutes should be easily do-able.

2k @ Level 7 = 9:05 for my first timed 2k run.

Christ I've got a long way to go. My arms felt like lead after that but the rest of me is OK. I might try reducing the resistance next time.

42 years old 90kg 6'4".
You're doing too much work with your arms. It should all come from the legs/core apart from the last bit.

I am not great at rowing - not had a go for a few weeks but when I started I found that after 4 or 5 goes over 3 or 4 weeks that I got to 7.59 for 2K. I am 45 and okish with fitness as I mountain bike at weekends. I am 94 kilos and just under 6ft. So do need to trim up a wee bit. I dont feel the rowing hurts any muscles but it certainly gets my heart rate and breathing maxed out.
I think that if I get a couple of good rows in every week and make sure I get plenty of sleep then I should hopefully break 7.45

Do I detect a hint of scepticism there Alan? hehe

Just done my PB for 5K at 19.55 and could have done better quite honestly, wasn't that tired, certainly far from that vomiting feeling.

Got my C2 in 2004 too and have log records going back to the start with last PB 20.21. Nice to know you get 8 years older but physically more fit smile

Oh yeah it was level 7 btw.

1:17 is awesome. Bloody remarkable. Just making sure it was on correct machine. What a man. Gotta be a big strong dude for that!
Envious!
Keep tugging and you'll get sub 20 soon. I've done nothing this week as not up to it!

I'm not convinced the 19-29 time of 1:18.7 is a record as I did that around 10 years ago - is probably still on the rankings somewhere

Level 7 for me too. Reckon I'm going to have to try for a sub 20 minute today. Was going to be doing a chest/back session with some colleagues, but a sub 20 minute 5k is way more tempting.

I've gone for it.

My response to my time is fffffffuuuuuuuccccckkkkkkk. Not fair.

20 minutes, 0.7 sec. 0.8 second faster, and I'd have been under the 20 minutes. Pacing wasn't far off though.

And of course not helped by the nicotine habit ......

That's so annoying isn't it!? Done the same thing many times. On the upside it means you can do it nicotine and all.

Started the Pete plan and am earnestly going for sub-7mins.

you.ve gotta accelerate the last 250m. so leave something in the tank for that. A good session for that is multi sprints. 20x100 rest 1. go as fast as you can and you'll get confidence in your ability to speed thru thu the line.
well done Richard..the PP is excellent. Sub7 is bloody diff. I havent tried a race for a year. pb still 6:47.6. Have done 100 and 500 pbs though. 15.8 & 1:28.6 respectively. My expectations to beat my 2k are too high and my brain says I cant do it...so I chicken out when the time comes. The shorter stuff is mentally much easier cos its over so fast. Thats why the 2k is a true test of rowing.

Sub 7 sounds hard but then again I only have 13 seconds to remove from my PB to get there.

Let it roll!

BTW Can we start a top ten 2000m and maybe 5000m list of the best times? I reckon this would eb really motivating.

I'll start below and maybe others can add theirs above and below in order of best time?
