A question for those that know their rowing machines:

How do the Concept rowers compare to the Water rower?

I mean in terms of if you can do 2000m in x mins on a concept, can that be broadly compared to a time for the same distance on a water rower?

cheers

I think you'll struggle to find many active oarsman who have ever use da water rower, although I dare say someone will know roughly what the comparison is.

At the end of the day every rowing club in the world uses Concept machines, nuff said.

I have tried both, and I know which I preferred using. It wasnt the concept!

I do understand that the concept is widely available, very durable, and the software/measuring is supposed to be excellent. All of which make it a very good machine for club use.

to keep it simple, whats the deal with the levels ??

I do 7:14 on lvl 10... will i do the same time on lvl 1 or will i do a faster time ?
you will do a very different time...how different and whether you are faster or slower depends on you. For me, at 6ft6 and very slow stroke rate i could easily get around 6mins on 10 but would be stuck on level one as my body is able to move fast enough to compensate for the reduction in power per stroke....the fact that each stroke is "easier" doesnt help as i still have to shift 18 stone up and down the machine! If your a skinny little guy then you may find an "easier" pull is better and that tugging on level 10 was knackering you.

It depends what causes you fatigue....i'm wide so have no issues pulling against force but dont like moving quick, the opposite is true for smaller people.

...and a lot of ex-rowers (who are no longer interested in time-comparisons) use the water-rower. The water-rower is a far nicer machine to use in terms of aesthetics, noise, and feel - I'd happily have one in my house whereas my C2 is situated in the garage. The reason it's not more widely used is because because the C2 has become the benchmark for times. Kind of like the Mac vs PC debate.

Comments above are valid - water rowers are nicer to use and just as good for fitness (if not better as they are less stressfull on the body for the same work load)...they also look cool!

Concepts are in gyms because they are expected to be there and for those who need to check their times...as this thread shows, 99% of people only need a time relative to their own PB not that of the international rankings!

I bought a C2 10 days ago on fleabay, first time on one since gym 15 years ago when I would do 9.16 (an easy one for me to remember) as part of a circuit training. I did manage a quicker time a few times but they wouldn't be much under 9 mins.

First time on it level 1 2000 metres 12.46 and I have been on it every morning and now got the time down to 10.43 which is a fair achievement for me and I realise it's not up to a lot of the other times you super fit guys posts!

I wouldn't say I enjoy it or look forward to using it but having it right outside the shower room helps me feel guilty if I step over it in the morning without the 2k workout.
regardless of time that's a great workout every morning
I have now managed to get below 10 minutes twice now (9.42 is the best) and still on level 1. Some mornings I can do it easily and others it's a struggle to get close to 10.15

I have started using it because 3 years ago got I knocked off my bike and ended up in hopital with a badly fractured leg and a brachial plexus injury and a broken ulna and radius which is now getting back to normal. To think I couldn't move my arm at all 3 years ago. I have put a lot of weight on, I'm about 11st 10 at the moment (5' 10") and that's after having an AKA May 07. I used to weigh 11st with two legs!

I think I might start doing it twice a day as so far I have been using it nearly every day.

Had my first proper effort last night at the end of a not too taxing workout. I got 8.12 which i was pretty happy with - I'm sure i can push that lower though biggrin

Is it just a case of keep rowing to make the times fall?

ergo times are affected by three things - build, technique and fitness. The main one here is really build in many ways as someone 6ft6 but out of shape will have a good shot against someone shorter in shape (i've beaten short fit guys when i was 21 stone and FAT!) However, you cant alter that.....next is technique....i always found the easiest way to focus on this was watch the handles arc of movement - it should be parallel to the floor - not up and over the knees like you see with some many people...and then fitness, just row! (to do a REALLY fast time you also need to work on your mental attitude as the last 2 mins of a 2k row are quite hard to keep focused during...but dont worry about for now!)

The world record holder is a bit of a freak - highest VO2 max ever recorded. That's nearly half of my time.

Interesting how much of it is height/weight - the fastest light weight man in the world is still of my PB time.....but i would doubt that i was ever fitter than him!

For the statistics, Stephansen’s splits per 500m:
1:31.1, 1:32.3, 1:32.4, 1:30.7

183 tall, 74kg
