I don’t look like a fat git but I am a bit heavy. The 184 bpm concerned me at the gym. I was surprised. Never seen it so high!

He would mix my 1 hour sessions up with core work and working out the thigh muscle and back muscles.
184 is not overly high for your age, if you are concerned about it then ease off when it gets high, let it go down and then raise it up again but don't keep it at 184 for the length of time you quote.
After a month or so of training my HR would level at about 160bpm tops but I wouldn't let it stay that high for more than a minute or so and would ease off until it dropped to about 120 before pushing a bit harder again.

Aabbaa1980 - Yep very sad, he was tall blonde good-looking, loads of chicks, now he can't even wipe his own arse.... and 32 years young!

Just goes to show, never take anything for granted as you never know whats around the corner.

Get a proper check-up

Yeah, but Mr Selfish here still wants the view of the collective on the fact that my heart rate can hit 180+, but at rest it's 48 - 52, I'm fit and healthy and I've "the blood pressure of a teenager" (I'd give it back if I could find them).

Am I OK, or will I explode....?

Without checking back I don't know your age, but so long as you're sub fifty-ish I'd guess it's okay. I'm forty-feckin-seven; my RHR is about 50 bpm and I let my HR peak at 170 when running - not jogging. It may be possible for me to go higher but I'd rather play it safe-ish. A typical 45 minute jog/cross trainer session averages 150 peaking at 160-ish.
I drink beer*, schmoke tabs* and eat curry* but am fairly fit-ish.

You heard this from a bloke on the internet - inadmissible in a court of law or your inquest.

* These days once or twice a month, not the five or six times a week of old.

That's what I want to hear. Although it does rather remind me of that gag, famous last words....

Your max rate should be approx 220 - your age = 191. So you're OK but operating near the max.

Fat loss exercise is around 75-85% of that = 143-162.

There are more accurate formulas but that's a good basic look at what you should be doing.
I really would not worry about what your perceived maximum heart rate is, especially using the above formula, which is no longer used anyway.

I train with Commonwealth Games standard cyclists, and many of their maximum heart rates vary from 178 - 210, regardless of age.

If you want to find out your maximum heart rate, there is the VO2 test, whereby (under medical supervision) you run for a specific amount of time on a treadmill increasing the effort every few minutes, for a timed period, until you have reached your maximum threshold....not a pleasant experience by the way.

My lactate tolerance blows out way before my heartrate peaks on those tests. And yes, they are particularly unpleasant.

Are those heart rate monitors any good?

Like the OP I have similar health issues in my family and my chloestral is high.

I'm 5ft 7 and currently weighing in at 14 stone.

I've been back in the gym since the New Year and feel much better but I'm not convinced the weight is coming off as wuickly as possible.

Part of this is probably me not working myself hard enough (something I have been rectifying over the last couple of weeks).

I try and swim a couple of times a week and then get into the gym for some resistance training either once or twice a week.

I've also been trying to drink as much water as possible which helping with my hunger and watching what I eat.

I know it's not an over night process but i'm enjoying it!
I'll let you know in a few days, I've got a waterproof gps enabled one coming for my birthday on Thursday. This should be fun!

I think I'll remain in blissful ignorance as I don't fancy the taste of that amount of unpleasant.
