For about a week now I've been suffering from a clicking jaw whenever I eat and open my mouth beyond a certain point. Just wondering if anyone else had experienced it?

My OH has had this for a while now (at least 2 months). Apparently the doctor just said it was temporomandibular joint problems, it'll be temporary and will go away.

She's in quite a lot of pain I think, but it's getting really irritating listening to yawn - click - ow, yawn - click - ow...!

I've had this for about 6 years now, you get used to it. Got it laughing at someone that fell over. That'll teach me.

Hurts a bit but nothing special. Doc said the only way to stop it is to wash out the jaw joint using a very big syringe. I decided I could live with the inconvenience!

Luckily it doesn't hurt yet but I'm no longer allowed to eat with the family as they find it disgusting, means I can go and watch a bit of TV, so not all bad.

I'll probably pop into the Doctor later in the week but I'm not too fussed by it, I suppose it is just one of those things.

you might find an osteopath or chiropractor may be able to manipulate the TM joint. might be worth a try though i've never had it done myself!! i doubt it's anything to worry about, everyone has at least 1 joint which clicks. only interesting thing with the TMJ is it has 2 compartments with a disc (similar to an intervertebral disc) seperating the 2 (1 for moving the chin up and down, and the other for moving it side to side).

i wouldn't worry about it yet to be honest.

hehe it's possibly due to ligamentous or muscular structures. if lax, then my previous post of a manipulation will not apply. (you don't want to manipulate an already mobile [hypermobile?] joint)

unless you are getting other side effects i doubt it's much to worry about mate.

Mine has been clunking a lot recently, and occasionally locking. Dentist was referring me for an OPG (?) but that was weeks ago and I've heard nothing. Think I'll just put up with it. I do seem to be gritting my teeth a lot though.

I've had this for probably 15 years now. It comes and goes in terms of how loud it is, but it's often audiable when I'm eating. Once in a while it'll stop doing it for a few months at a time, always seems to come back. I've seen a few doctors about it over the years and the general concensus has been that there's nothing much can be done about it.

Mine's been clicking since my last game of rugby in 2003. Has got worse since unplanned contact between my head and the malayaian sea floor about a year ago.
Doc told me not to worry.

Yep, i've had this for several years now. It happens every time i chew, every time i open my mouth more then half an inch and if my jaw moves side to side. People also occaisionally hear it when i eat.

Sometimes i forget about it or don't notice it for a while, other times it annoys me to the point of wanting to rip my own face off. If i'm in "noticing it" mode, the repeated action of it can sometimes make me feel a bit strange.

I've been told there's nothing that can be done about it, although i might look into this:

Same here. I've had it for a few years mildly (clicks every time I open my mouth) which is not audible. It now clicks very loudly sometimes when eating and especially yawning... Ouch!

I heard you can see your dentist about it, and the doctor will do nothing.

I had a good old fashion punch up many moons ago and received a cracking one to my jaw, could not eat properly or clench my teeth down was killing me pain scale a good 9/10, a couple of weeks into this I flew to Ireland and was given a boiled sweet prior to take off after a while there was a loud crunch (the woman next to me heard it!) and I could move my jaw again! So was obviously a dislocation. Just thought i d share that with you. Bloody killed.

I finally saw my dentist for a check up yesterday and it turns out that I grind my teeth subconsciously at night, you can see where I've ground down some teeth, and this is putting pressure on the joint in my mouth and stressing the ligaments/muscles causing the clicking when I open my mouth.

To reduce the damage and maybe help things my dentist recomended a mouth guard to wear at night so I'll be looking into getting one made and fingers crossed it does improve the situation.

This is what I've had recommended, but I don't know that I want to wear a mouth guard every night for the rest of my life!
