Tried a recipe from the last Mens Health this morning for breakfast. Well, tried to try would be a better description!

400ml milk
40g protein powder
tablespoon flaxseed oil
3 tablespoons oats
strawberries

I managed two swigs then the rest went down the sink as it was close to making me heave.

Anyone got suggestions for a more palletable version? I quite like the idea of fruit, protein and oats in the morning as I'd normally have porridge anyways. Just the very gritty texture of the blended oats and smell of the flax I think got to me.

(should have expected it with the flaxseed actually, linseed oil used to make my stomach turn oiling my cricket bat, duno why drinking the stuff would be any different!)

I use whatever fruit's in the bowl or garden - loads of blackberries at the moment with milk or fruit juice. Add a scoop of myprotein and give it a whiz. I also have porridge/cereal or eggs and wholewheat toast.
Pretty sure there's some oats available that are specially ground/rolled for this - I'll have a butchers... stand by.

Chocolate flavoured protein powder (Using PhD at the mo) with oats and a bit of Peanut Butter is good as is replacing the PB with frozen blueberries!

I'll do a chocobanana smoothie if I have time.

1 banana, chopped.
2 - 3 LARGE t-spoons of Nesquick (chocolate).
300 - 400ml milk.
2 x Scoops of Protein powder.
(1 desert spoon of ground Flax seed - if I have any.)

Blend.

Then stir in about half a cup of oats (do not blend the oats).. proper-lumpy-oaty-goodness!! You end up having to get the majority of the oats out with a spoon.

Mmmm.. lick

Probably easier just sticking to the pre-flavoured protein powders to be honest. Tried a couple of these so called "recipes" and like yourself, nearly spewed on the spot.

Myprotein stuff tastes spot on smile

This - chocolate mint myprotein stuff is rather nice, although i find the key with any of it seems to be to make sure that you shake it up very very very thoroughly.

I do Myofusion strawberry & cream protein with a banana, frozen fruit mix (from morrisons) and maybe some extra fresh strawberries if they are cheap enough... Mix it with skimmed milk & low fat natural yoghurt. Maybe throw some honey in for good measure!

Great way to start the day!

Not sure about the tuna, sounds a bit sadistic to me!

I'm back to virtually living on mine - love them.

I use 'Whey Gourmet' protein powder (decent protein to carb to fat/ calorie ratios and tastes really good) - vanilla for the shakes and either that, raspberry or chocolate for 'plain' shakes (= just water or milk).

I mix the powder with frozen fruits - usually summer fruits, Black forest fruits or blueberries, sometimes a mix - porridge oats (usually) and semi-skimmed milk then crush/blend it in the mixer.

Excellent when really cold and the rest goes in the fridge or a freezer bag with ice blocks when I'm travelling. Also very nutritious.

MyProtein is very well priced.

I personally found it too sweet! The Carbs in it tend to be made up of ALOT of sugars which is bad.

My personal favourite supplement is Reflex (Strawberry). A bit more expensive but tastes ok and has high quality whey.

Like anything in life, you get what you pay for. High quality whey is important to me.

But if MyProtein works for you, then crack on!

Bit confused with what you're saying really...

Myprotein sell a vast amount of products.. Depends what product you purchase as to carb or sugar content.

And why the need for 'high quality whey' its predominantly branding and if you knew about dairy then you'd probably have realised you're pretty much a fool smile

And anyway, rather than wasting money on supplements you're better off purchasing food and test prop.

I quite liked the mint but didnt think i would be able to hack 2.5kg's of the stuff lol. So went with vanilla and a 1kg bag of unflavoured. If replacing a meal/snack, i will opt for a scoop of vanilla and scoop of unflavoured.

I had the PHD pharma whey stuff before and although expensive it really did taste the business and was quite thick a shake.

Good suggestions folks, cheers for that.

I'm a bit of a cheapo on the protein front tbh, just buy a few tubs of that half price stuff out Holland and Barrett usually but looking more in to it now that I'm looking at starting training.

Biggest battle is getting something in me in the morning that wont make me spew but gives me the nutrition I need. I'm not great for eating in the morning and early starts for work dont help either!

I really like my 'Snickers' shake.

Couple of spoons of chocolate nesquik
Spoon of smooth peanut butter (has to be whole earth organic or from a health shop, not sunpat etc)
50g oats
1 scoop why
200ml milk
300ml water

Blend it all up, lovely.

Is the Holland and Barrett protein not got added "ste" in it.. high carbs etc?

myprotein.com - 2.5kg is about 20quid. Get some of that on the go. Or if you can handle it, you could get unflavoured for ruffly a fiver cheaper.

I reckon your problem could be of the false economy kind, buying cheaper crap that tastes so bad you can't stomach it. I started training 30 years ago and the stuff we had then was absolutely disgusting - still vividly remember trying to force down Cassilan mixed with milk or coffee to try to disguise the nauseating taste (mixed like rubber balls too, nice!) The powders available weren't much better either.

There's so much around now that tastes great (or neutral) and is high quality in terms of nutrition to filler/calorie ratios that it shouldn't be hard. The Whey Gourmet is so good I can even bear it just mixed with straight water, though admit it's much better with milk and/or fruit.

I'm the fussiest eater anyone who knows me has ever met but can't imagine anyone spewing over one of my fruit shakes - they are ace!

It's not the taste that gets me mate, it's just food in the morning. Strange I know but most things don't agree with me at that time, adding flax seed oil just pushed it too far hehe

The H&B stuff I can take no probs later in the day on it's own, which did actually surprise me. One scoop choc, one scoop plain.

The 2.5kg tub from myprotein does sound the better bet next time I'm buying though.
