Mrs Zax is about to embark on a week without food. Just some syrup mixture drink allowed, and maybe some water. She says she is detoxing and it will help her to lose weight and feel great. I fear she'll be an irritable nightmare for the duration and even worse when she puts on what she loses and them some after a post-fasting eating binge
Tried to talk her out of it but no joy. Anyone had experience of this sort of thing?

I'd go down to Betfred and bet she'll be fatter in a month but they wouldn't accept the bet...
I cba to go into detail about it but she ought to do some more research. She WILL lose weight but unless she intends to eat bugger all for the rest of her life, she WILL be fatter. There's another term for this diet - the yoyo diet. Can you guess why?
People want the miracle cure but any long term, healthy approach to weight loss comes from hard work and discipline... which many people just have not got.

Completely agree, its dumb in the extreme.I cba to go into detail about it but she ought to do some more research. She WILL lose weight but unless she intends to eat bugger all for the rest of her life, she WILL be fatter. There's another term for this diet - the yoyo diet. Can you guess why?

Not to mention extremely unhealthy, forget the detox this is going to do the body far more damage than it does good, never mind detoxing is complete nonsense anyway.
Very silly.

There is no such thing as detoxing. It's utter bks. She can lose weight and feel great by simply reducing her calorie count, sensibly and doing some regular exercise. As others have said already, she will be depriving herself of vital nutrients and make herself ill, no doubt. Tried to talk her out of it but no joy. Anyone had experience of this sort of thing?
Thanks, all very sensible and I have tried to tell her. But it's in one ear and out the other. She just paid €40 for 1000ml of tree syrup FFS! It will be her main sustenance. That's almost single malt price levels
If there exists a web page which clearly explains the lack of sense behind such a plan I would much appreciate a link.
May require celebrity endorsement though, or she won't believe it....

I'm not a celebrity but am a doctor of medicine and can tell her that this is a stupid and unnecessary thing to do that will make her ill. If there exists a web page which clearly explains the lack of sense behind such a plan I would much appreciate a link.

I have done a fast twice now in a detox resort in Thailand.
The first one was 7 days and the second one 5 days. Some people did them for 10 days but this was a bit much for me.
We would have clay/cilium shakes at 7am, 10am, 1pm and 4pm, interspersed with juices, herbal pills and finishing with as much vegetable broth (water vegetables have been boiled in) at 7pm. No alcohol or caffeine.
The two days before the fast we had to eat only salad or fruit with no dressings and drink water, the first day after was fruit only and then you add things for the subsequent days - salad, protein, carbs etc.
Yes, I lost weight, but that wasn't my primary reason - I wanted to detox and get some healthy food back in my diet at the same time as cutting out caffeine and alcohol.
Yes, it is difficult. It was easier to do on holiday with the support of the staff at the resort, but I'm not sure I could manage one here doing a normal day's work and stress.
A fast is not that bad provided you manage it properly and use it to base a good diet on.
During both fasts, I never got hungry, irritable or ill.
Happy to answer any more questions if you mail me.

But (1) is the weight still off (2) are you back to your old habits? If (1) no and (2) yes, what is the point?

No, I'm not back to my old habits.
I can't answer for anyone else but doing this worked for me at the time and has helped me. It's worth emphasising that crash dieting and Heat magazine-esque fad detoxes are NOT the same as doing a well-supervised fast/detox.
Some say, the human race has endured life for this long because of the body's ability to store fat in times of hardship.
Thus when your body goes through a period of famine it clings on to the only thing that will enable us to survive until food becomes more abundant. Fat.
I have absolutely no research to back this up but it seems logical to me. I just hope your wife doesn't end up inadvertently putting on more weight as a result of this stunt.
Maybe this article will help educate your good lady:

Why not simply ease off on the crap you ate, though? That's what I did.
I did and have.Look, I think you may be misunderstanding me here. I was due for a holiday about the same time as I decided I wanted to sort this stuff out and that was what I did and it helped get me eating better.
Obviously others may not agree and dismiss it but all I can say is what I did worked for me and I don't believe that properly managed fasts are necessarily a bad thing.

I personally would bet she will NOT put on weight
IMO cutting down severley on food is the way to go but not totally.
The rebound doing something like that is most likely going to mean she is fatter than when she started! If you do anything extreme with your body, you've got to expect it to rebound!IMO cutting down severley on food is the way to go but not totally.
There's hugely more effective ways to lose weight over faddy nonsense like this.....
