So, diet coke is like 1 calorie per 250ml, but pure (not from concentrate) fruit juice is around 50 calories per 250ml. So when trying to lose weight am I better off drinking Diet Coke or Fruit Juice?

Logic says drink fruit juice, but the stats on the bottle say diet coke is lower calorie. I'm confused!

Diet Coke- fruit juice is dreadful for weight loss- has LOADS of sugar in it

plus coke has caffeine which boosts the metabolism

of course you're best off drinking cold water, but that can get a bit dull...

I switched to sparkling water with either lime cordial or elderflower which is very refreshing.

I don't understand why you're confused. You've already said Diet Coke is only 1 calorie, i.e. nothing, so what's the confusion?

Fruit Juice has 50 Calories per 250 ml

Why the confusion? hehe

Diet Coke.

Although there is/was some controversy over the use of aspartame, but I read somewhere you had to have 14 cans of diet coke a day before it becomes a health risk...

Hi. Thanks for your replies. My confusion was just that logic would say 'fizzy pop' = bad and pure juice (basically just mashed fruit, and nothing else) = good. But the calories don't match with my 'common sense' understanding of healthy vs unhealthy.

If you want to lose weight just work on the basis that calories in is less than calories out. Simple. smile

If you like to drink fruit juice then you should drink it! 50 calories is not going to be the deal breaker, but all the sweets and biscuits might be wink

You may have high water retention as a side effect of your drinks intake.. thus increasing your weight!
Fizzy drinks are also worse for tooth decay. Fruit juice can provide vitamins. Diet coke is not on for a good diet. High volumes of juice not good either.

Take the Diet Coke. In fact, if you make sure the can of Diet Coke is ice cold, drinking it will actually result in negative calories (the physical energy required to drink it, and the energy required to bring the liquid up to body temperature). Low calorie squash is good as well - same calories as Diet Coke, but considerably less harmful for your teeth.

If your logic says juice, have a word with yourself!

have you tried buying lemons or limes and squeezing a bit in your water? You only need a drop or two to completely change the taste of a glass of water.

I've seen a number of TV, non scientific, studies that have shown people who drink diet drinks end up eating more as a result of being starved of sugar. These studies were carried out following current thinking/findings of a number of nutritionalists. So I don't think it's clear cut.

Naturally, drinking a smoothie is bad news due to the increased sugar but am not so sure about regular fruit juice. Personally I'd stick to water as has been suggested.

Of course it's clear cut. Assuming you're on a proper diet and excercise regime then if you are thirsty a diet coke is better than 50 cals of fruit juice.

Do keep it in mind though that fructose (fruit sugars) are better for you than refined sugars, if you are picking where to get the calories you do consume from.

The problem with drinking diet coke (and other sweet diet drinks) is that they can cause sugar cravings I'd avoid them and have water.

You could drink green tea.
