originally thought the car was way too expensive when the gave an indicative price. Then the reviews came in and I thought, yeah then maybe its about the right price and then I read the OP. if its rue that most of the spec options are pretty essential then this car is far far too expensive, especially when you consider it can get you another 2+2 seater which gets pretty consistently good reviews. The GT-R

The GT-R does seem to be great value, but without driving both I have a feeling that the Evora will actually feed the senses more than the GT-R, again it will be horses for courses, as some people love the elise, some people do not see the point (not a lot after driving it)

For me speed is not everything, feeling it is, and steering feel through a nice set of corners, something I think the Evora will have in spades...

I do appreciate however that as a showcase the GT-R is impressive...

I agree with you and as the OP, I do think the different packs will be essential making it just too much.

Ages ago I posted on here wondering what the market was, I still don't know. At that price if you want a fast four seater why would you buy the evora, you'd go with the GTR, an M3/5 any number of AMGs. Christ you can get a reasonable Massa GT for close to new Evora money and I'd take that any day.

The evora has to be cheaper. I really really hope that the US 'gets' the Evora and buys the thing or Lotus is in deep st!

the GTR is a 2 ton SUV in comparison to an Evora though ...im afraid I like my sportscars remotely light and 1.8 ton (2 ton with occupants) is a truck ...no matter how fast you make it go wink

I agree - I think of the GTR as a GT that can handle.

Thanks for the earlier tink to the R&T article, now I know who might have been responsible for driving like a tt last Saturday afternoon.

Lotus finally allowed us to sample its new sports car, the Evora. Despite the torrential downpour in Loch Lomond just outside of Glasgow, Scotland — imagine that, rain in Scotland — I drove the new car for more than five hours, and logged 350 or so miles on the area's twisty, and sometimes crowded, roads.

Driving down the side of Loch Lomond, something red and shiny appeared quickly in the mirror, jinking in and out of traffic. I was doing 60ish in a fairly continuous stream of traffic. Did'nt recognise what it was, even though it was soon sitting bloody close on the back bumper. Good throttle response as the nut behind the wheel overtakes and then has to force back in in front of me.

"Aha, it's one of those new Lotuses, shame an arse seems to have bought one" I thought.

He does exactly the same to the car that was previously in front of me. Then turns off into the Cameron House hotel.

Yeah, R&T it was crowded, and yeah the road was wet - tosser.
Nice car though, if a bit pricey.

don't get me wrong the Evora is a different driving prospect or so I understand, not having driven either the GT-R or the Evora, but they do fall into the same price bracket and from the reviews I've read the Nissan is till a pretty amazing drivers car rather than just a technical marvel.

My boss has a Nissan at work and is pretty unimpressed by it. Quick but not that fun, even on a track. I am hoping the Lotus will be much more fun, it appears so from the Autocar pictures.

Also the Nissan looks like a truck, its just massive.

Yep, that's the problem I have with the GTR, it's nearly S class coupe (CL) size. Great for US roads..

How much are the rear seats in Lotus's 2+2? Love the creative marketing. At Porsche you pay extra for a hard top Boxster, yet the opposite is true for the 911.

At least you get rear seats as standard in cooking 911 models, but then pay extra for their removal as part of lightweight GT3 etc packages.

There's plenty of cars about for less than £60k that will appeal to those who crave headline performance figures. For me its all about how a car drives, feels and communicates with me.
Lotus do this better than anyone else. The bankers can have their Porsches and those that want pub bragging rights can buy GTRs. Me? I'd take a Lotus any time as I know it will put a bigger smile on my face than anything else. Also, I'm less likely to be thought of as a 'banker'.

I agree, I could not say it better myself!

There's also the matter of styling - for the people whose priority is having a dramatic looking car, you'd be looking at an R8/lambo/Ferrari to beat the Evora.

I wouldnt say an R8 is dramatically styled and any better looking than an Evora, as it just looks like a big TT wink

I think the R8 is quite dramatic and having spent a fair bit of time in one, its bloody good to drive! The problem with the Evora is that it is kind of bland, a bit anodyne and the rear haunches actually couldnt be any worse, its a hunchback of a car.

Funnily enough I followed a M100 Elan down the road yesterday and the evora looks like an evolution of that design more than anything. Looking at the evora square on from the front it is ok, boring but ok. From the rear, square on, I quite like it - thats its best view. From the side is an utter horror, to long and from the rear of the doors backwards just a disaster!

I think both the side and rear views look fantastic! The front three-quarter I really dislike though - because the cabin sweeps in so much at the back, it looks like the car has a huuuge arse. I wish they had kept the cabin a bit squarer at the back.

Sure, for those that value either image or possibly insulation over a more interactive experience, an AMG or Masarati may be a good buy but if you enjoy driving it sounds like the Evora might just be a better bet.

This months Car magazine (well worth buying for 2 Evora articles, a GT3 v fly-by-wire GT-R and Nurburgring feature) compares the Evora to the 997 and M3 and it does very well indeed.

And apparantly they're only looking to sell 200/year in the UK - sounds like job done to me.

I find that hard to comprehend?

I can believe 200 for this year, but no way can they make it pay that kind of level....(unless the rest of the world were 90% of the sales)

I don't really understand the GTR comparisons.

I'm pretty sure that an R33 of the same value would MURDER my car both on the road and track. Do I want one? No.

I'm not sure on the styling, nor the pricing but the most important thing is always the driving for me. Not the speed (although of course it'a a major factor) but the fun.

I so hope it does well. I'd definitely be interested in a 2nd hand one.

On the flipside, if I had the money for a new one it'd be a 2nd hand Masser Gran Turismo with whatever exhaust the one I saw in Cape Town had. It don't matter how that drives, cos I'd have fun just revving it on the driveway.

200!! Did that come from Lotus?? If so that is a total downgrade, at the launch they were talking of selling at least 2000 a year! 200 is lunacy, unless the plan is to abandon the UK and European markets and hit the US' which wouldnt be a bad idea. The car looks much more US anyway.

200... You know where we heard that before... Ah yes, the Europa, that was the figure Lotus talked about because it was seen as a short term, non-core car! I have one and love it, but that is not the point.

Well there were more than a few US journos at the launch so go figure! I'm sure they'll sell a lot in EMEA too.
