Well what do you reckon?Have any of you expierienced different pricing structures, poorer quality goods or service?Maybe rules applied that seemingly are enforced to you rather than a Spaniard.Just a quick poll.

I think that if you try and integrate the Spanish will treat you equally as well as a native. I have seen people treated poorly, but then they have always been the " I´m English, so you should speak English to me" brigade. The Spaniards are no more racist to us Brits in Spain than we are to foreigners in our own country.

I agree with Kev, the only people that I think possibly get problems are the Brits,Germans or any other nationalities who have this mentality and end up creating Ghettos and want the Spansh to speak english or german etc.
Then the Spanish take whatever they can, but I have lived in Spain for 20yrs and have never ever had any problems but then again I always speak Spanish and mix with them all the time.

agree with some of that, but was chatting to a freind who is a mechanic(we both speak spanish btw)and i live in rural spain surrounded by "natives"and we recounted numerous tales of woe leading to the post.he lives in a mixed nationality urb with plenty of spanish families and one of the local spanish bars sells the out of date beer to brits only, puts all the lips eyeballs and bo***x into the paella for brits and has two pricing structures-spanish and brits. He also said he gets regular visits from the guardia over the vehicles parked outside the unit while sapnish owned tyre business next door has no such problems with the same number of cars.I have expierienced different pricing structures for brits/spanish for materials(not trade/retail)and recall the spanish getting a proper ticking off from fifa over racism.Sure there is good and bad in all but as things have nipped and tucked i think this attitude seems a bit more prevalent.

I think the short answer is that "There Is No Short Answer". No matter how tolerant a society is, you will always get some a***holes. Maybe I am lucky in that the region where I live (Costa del Sol) the locals do seem to recognise the value of the ex-pats here and the income they bring to the area. I still maintain though that those who make an effort are much better treated than those who don´t. I know somebody who has lived in Spain for 20 years, can just about say hello and order a beer in Spanish, and spends most of his time moaning about the rough deal he gets from the Spaniards. well frankly, I think he gets the deal he deserves and have told him so more than once. Me and the missus talk Spanish as much as possible and we very rarely have anything to complain about.

I have livd and worked in Spain for the last 20 years in various parts of Spain from the Costa del Sol, Estepona Casco Viejo, San Pedro de Alcantara, in the hills behind Marbella in Monda in a very peasant community, then in Galicia for 5 Years wonderful people and now I live in Ibiza which is a very picturesque and not built up at all again wonderful local people.

Through choice I will probably return to live in Galicia absolutely fantastic place and it does rain there but not at all like it is made out to.

I have never had a double price system put against me, the closest that I cam to that was when I bought the 3 houses in Estepona Casco Viejo to convert into 1 house and the then owner suddenly realised I was english and said to the Inmobiliario in front of me in Spanish that if he had known that I was English then he would have doubled the asking price not knowing that I spoke Spanish.

I then told him that had I known he was a con artist then I wouldn't have been interested in buying his houses either, he didn't know how to back peddle and swallow his words quick enough.
But that is the only thing that has happened to me, but I do remember the Hamilton thing last year in Barcelona.

The Spanish hate any nationality that does not even try to speak spanish, even just asking para la cuenta por favor o una cerveza o otra cosas.
La gente no tiene ningun palabra son mal educados.
The english are some of the laziest people living in Spain as regards learning the language, as Kev said some have lived here for 20 years and cannot speak even simple sentences and wonder why they get treated like st.

Me I prefer to live and mix with the Spanish all the time rather than anyone else.

If that's what he means then another Brit that should bugger off back to the U.K.whatever the country have the courtesy to learn their language and customs if you intend on living there.

Otherwise you will end up just like the U.K. LOL

My teenage son is half Asian, he holds a British passport and goes to the local international(English) school. On a night out recently with his mates a bunch of English girls called out to him "hey China boy, go home !" The irony was completely lost on them, at least until he reminded them of where they were.
The British are more racist the the Spanish

in the 18 months we have lived in Spain, i have come across most of the above posts. We are the only foringers in a town/village of 1000 people.
We had to learn (and are still learning) Spanish quickly and the hard way.

Buying houses is a joke e.g, Window price 150.000euros in black and white go to look at the house with the agent and add another 30k. Our Spanish maybe bad but that don't make us stupid. we can still read numbers.

Bit slow to come back on this but I was actually refering to the Spaniards con artist action in assuming you couldnt speak Spanish.
I work in Germany and so speak German and always try to speak the basics when in France, Spain etc.
Sat next to a family at a bar last year in Alicante who didnt make the slightest effort. Totally oblivious to the fact they were in Spain.
And yes for sure we had far better service from the waiter because we tried.

Apologies for joining the topic so late. The seller thought that a person that buys a second house, (a holiday house) also abroad must be quite wealthy. So he thought should have taken advantage of that and ask a higher price. That was a natural (although not fair) reaction and nothing to do with your nationality.

English tourists have pretty bad reputation in Spain; violent, vulgar, arrogant, drunk and extremely dirty.
British who buy properties in Spain and live in Spain for years don’t even bother to speak Spanish, wherever they go speaking English and demanding locals speak English as well. They use to live in close communities with other English or foreign, trying to live like in Britain, eating British food, speaking English, etc. they do not bother to know Spanish culture and traditions. This English bad reputation in general could explain why some local’s still doesn’t like English. So few are paying for the damage caused of many English.

As it has been said already, any foreigner from any nationality who try to integrate, to know Spanish culture, history, traditions and speak the language are welcome and treated like part of the family. I have seen many cases like this.

Well, as the season starts here, I'm beginning to see the tattoo'd, pink, foulmouthed/screaming at kids fatties.
Won't be long before the shopping trollies start going into the lake accross the road, and the broken glass starts appearing on the footpaths, along with the vomit, and junk food leftovers.
Oh, and the drunken couples screaming at each other at 0200 in the morning.

And breathe... the joys of living in Mallorca. rolleyes

I've recently spent a few days in Galicia. cloud9 What with the fantastic traffic and cyclist free roads, the tranquility, and the very friendly/helpfull people, I'd move there, if I hadn't spent the last 4 years renovating my house.
Maybe in the future....

No I don't think they're racist. But I am! I hate the Bloody British! (The rabble anyway) smile

I don’t for one minute believe the Spanish are racist. As others have said if you integrate the Spanish will be ok. I am sure there are a few but you will get that in any country.

On Saturday night we were in one of our favourite restaurants. The owner and 2 staff were there. The owner has reasonable English but never uses it. The waiter is the same and the chef is fluent in English. There were two English girls at the bar discussing “the Spanish” in loud derogatory tones, from their conversation they live here and their English registered car was parked outside. One would wonder why they are here and also why they are surprised to not get a good reaction from the locals.
