Today's Telegraph leading the football coverage with an article saying Stevie G's number is up and the club are going after Pochettino. Surely a great outcome for Villa if credible?

God I hope so. I have lost any enthusiasm I have for Villa at the moment, all the great work done by Smith to build the team, get the feelgood factor and the buzz around the place has gone. Destroyed in less than 6 months by Gerrard. He has to go.

4 wins in 28 games!!

Loads of fans of Twitter have been calling for Poch for ages, so this is no surprise. Could be some substance to it, could just be lazy papertalk rehashing the rumours they read online. I'm hugely in favour of it if true.

Me too.

I did not want Smith to be sacked as I thought he had a st hand dealt to him at the start of the season (the Grealish Saga, having to accommodate Ings thus disrupting the forward line, and having to accommodate Tuanzebe thus disrupting what had been a solid back line).

He had to try to make a back 3 work, and try to play both Watkins and Ings, whilst having lost the "superstar" player and I think that most managers would have struggled.

I also think he would have been able to turn it around, but I understood and accepted the decision to pull the trigger on the basis that we took a step up in management quality for his replacement (someone like Poch), but we got Gérrard - I was very concerned by his background, and worried that Beale may have been the brains behind things at Rangers, but wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, but to date he has been terrible, with no sign of improvement. He has to go.

I think Gerrard will get the chance to stay until the World Cup starts, at which point he’ll be gone because he’s clearly not capable of turning it around.

Same system. Same players. Late substitutions. Lack of chances for fringe players, especially Archer. Given we’re not scoring goals how does a young striker not get a chance?

I will say the first half against Chelsea was far better than we had seen recently. With Watkins in a wider role utilising his work rate and running, gave space to Ings in the middle. It petered out in the second half as Chelsea went defensive but a glimmer at least.

Only if we had retained some wingers hey... The guys is a fraud of a manager and we need shot of him, the rot has firmly set-up in, he's not improved a single player through coaching

thought you played well against Chelsea

is the manager to blame for a Mings brainfart, and the keeper going for a disatrous two step wander?

2 incidents in a single game, versus months of rubbish team selections, mediocre performances, and general malaise.

From the BBC website:

Nine points from 10 games represents Villa's worst start to a Premier League season other than in 2015-2016, when they were relegated.

They have won just two of their past 18 games against current Premier League opposition.

Aston Villa have won only four times in 21 league fixtures, losing 11.

Villa have not had a winless away run of more than five games from the beginning of a Premier League season since 2011-12.

Their only win in the past 16 league games against London opposition was 2-1 at Crystal Palace last November.

Only Wolves have scored fewer Premier League goals than the seven by Villa this season.

Aston Villa's last nine league goals were scored by nine different players.

Philippe Coutinho has scored one goal and provided no assists in his past 21 league appearances.

Since the start of 2019-20, no outfield player has made more errors leading to goals in the Premier League than the five by Villa's Tyrone Mings.

Steven Gerrard lost only one of his 16 appearances as a Liverpool player against Fulham in all competitions, winning 12

That VAR wasn't clear enough for a red. I can't see the head movement and they both bumped chests.

The penalty was incredibly harsh too, but face it - we were losing that game regardless. Another turgid performance under a terrible manager. He has to go.

Kudos to all those vocal away fans singing 'Steven Gerrard, get out of our club' - there was no coming back from that, he has completely lost the fanbase.

I see a few journos online saying things to the effect of 'Poch might not want the job now it's a relegation fight'.

That irritates me if true, the whole charade of Moneyball. What do managers expect for their £XX million a year, a guaranteed top six finish?

Any manager worth their salt should relish the challenge. All they've got to do is guarantee 17th this season with 29 of 38 games still to play.

Lots of talks linking us with Thomas Frank from Brentford. I like and respect him, but I think the Premier League should ban the poaching of other teams' coaches within season.

Brentford are enjoying their first run in the top flight, doing really well (why would he step down the table?) and he's got just over three years left on his contract. He would be mad to take the gig right now, especially where Purslow is involved.

The latter seems to fall out of favour with fans very quickly. The Gerrard appointment was clearly because they have history together at Liverpool and I very much suspect he was on a shortlist of one to replace Dean Smith who, let's not forget, was sacked because the club wanted to see "continuous improvement". How's that working out for you then, Christian? If I was Dean Smith I'd be having a large beer tonight.
