Brighton are strong enough to win the play-offs without Stephens. They must surely ease past Sheff Wed and then Hull would be favourites to join them at Wembley. Can't see Hull pulling that off tbh.
The aggregate score of Hull City vs Derby County over the 2015/16 season was 6-0 to Derby County. (0-2 loss at KC Stadium in Nov, 0-4 loss at iPro Stadium in April) But Hull did win big today while Derby lost, so don't know what to make of that.

PS. This is the Brighton forum so I'll getmecoat

7000 rpm down Madeira Drive?
I love it when they 'give it large' in front of the crowds down there.
Been down Madeira drive a few times but not sure wether was doing 7000rpm lol hehe
As for yesterdays sending off what a load of rubbish he won the ball fairly and was just unfortunate for there player who should of wore his shin pads on his shin! Then the ref was gonna give a yellow til the player knocked it out of his hand and showed his gash then changed his mind useless premierste refs! Completely ruined the game after that but hey ho onwards and upwards hopefully win at wembley instead beer

I do feel for Brighton tonight; you play 46 games, miss automatic promotion on goal difference and then go out of the play-offs to a team which finished 15 points behind in the league. In many ways that doesn't seem right but everyone knows the rules before the season starts so I guess you just have to say good luck to Sheffield Wednesday. The Championship will arguably be tougher than ever next season and I can't help but think that one of the automatic promotion places will be taken by Newcastle, especially if they manage to retain Benitez; there'll be some other strong teams as well so I do wonder if Brighton may have missed their chance ever so slightly this season?

The play off system definitely favours the team who finished 6th over the team who finished 3rd. BHA went into that tie gutted and depressed, whereas SW went in just happy to be there and with nothing to lose.

If I wasn't so lazy, I'd chart who has been successful in all the playoffs in all the divisions since they were introduced and find out if the 5th/6th placed teams have a better success rate than the 3rd/4th placed sides.

But I can't be arsed.

OK, so 3rd place just edges it, but then 5th, 6th and 4th. I think 5th and 6th need to do more to get promoted than they currently do.

I like the idea of 6th v 5th over 2 legs, the winner plays 4th over 1 leg with 4th at home and the winner of that plays 3rd at Wembley for a place in the higher division.

Talksport said something similar last night. It does seem harsh on Brighton especially as they missed out on GD but everyone knows the rules on the play-offs and you would think that Brighton being 15 points ahead of Wednesday in the league they should have easily beaten them in the play-offs.

Im sure that in previous seasons 3rd-6th have normally been alot closer on points so the play-offs looked fairer.

Why bother with play off? bottom three go down, top three go up, so much simpler, and would surely have everyone pushing for the top three spots? Maybe I am missing something here?

Blimey! With that many games the season will be finished some time in June !!
The play offs are what they are. 3 up and 3 down leaves the end of season really dull and that is no good for the tv. Remember Sky calls all the shots these days!

It's 1 less game than the current system.

I think that third place should go straight to the final, then fourth and fifth play each other to see who else goes to Wembley. Fairer. With the luck they're having Brighton would still lose the final though....

You are missing something, the play-offs keep the season alive for a little longer for four clubs and generate a bit more revenue! smile

I guess there's no point complaining about the rules after a season's finished but personally I favour three up, three down and no play-offs; doesn't seem right to me that the points amassed over 46 games can in effect count for nothing with promotion for the third spot decided by the equivalent of a couple of cup-ties. However, if the play-off system is to continue perhaps 3rd in the Championship should have to play third from bottom in the Premier League? I suspect Newcastle are stronger than either Hull or Sheffield Wednesday yet they will be replaced in the Premier League by one of those sides for next season...

The play-offs keep the season alive not only for those four teams involved but also provide far more involvement for the teams that have a chance of getting into the play-offs. If you just have a three-up, three-down system then the season finishes so much earlier for the majority of teams. (and doesn't provide so much interest for the television company's to hype.......)

Having said that, as an Albion fan, I wish that it had been top three to go up for this season biggrin

Still, there's always next season and with Hoots signing a new contract yesterday we've got to be optimistic looking ahead to next season.

so, what if in your scenario, a team in 4th place only due to a goal difference of 1 goal and is 15 points ahead of the team in 5th place? Should all 4 teams go up as the 4th placed team would be in a similar position to Brighton right now?

The existing system works just fine, sometimes it's a close call but at the end of the day Brighton didn't get a win in either of the play-off games, so if they can't beat the team in 6th place then why should they even be considered for promotion?
