Just a point of curiosity, I was looking at the BBC premier league table, and noticed something I couldn't quite figure out.

Aston villa sit in 6th place, with 1 win, and with 5 games played, and Everton sit in 7th with 2 wins, and having played 4. The GD and point standings are the same, so how come Aston Villa are in 6th and not 7th? (It's a purely curiosity point, no moaning about being in 7th). So how is that worked put? I would have thought wins would take priority, if points and goad difference Are them same, is it simply goals scored, rather than number of wins that determines it?

At this stage in the season it is done on a simple alphabetical basis as positions don’t really mean anything till May, it is effectively journalistic lethargy. If the same situation occurs when the season is concluded (i.e. two teams on same points and same goal difference) it is then dependent on the results of when they played each other. If that does not produce a higher positioned team (i.e. two identical draws) I think it reverts to a coin toss. Where more than two teams finish on the same points and goal difference the maths could get potentially complicated, but in reality this does not often occur given the amount of possible variables over the season.
