I'd love to see him take a punt at a smaller club.
He's always said that he wants to return to play for his boyhood club Newells Old Boys in Argentine before he retires....but fears for the safety of his family, would prevent that happening at the moment, so that idea is out, unless he is expecting to play until he's almost 40?

And as to the posts about wages, I 100% agree but just look at Gareth Bale. It seems for him he's content to stick two fingers up at Real Madrid, take his £600K a week and never play again. Admittedly he's won a lot of trophies but it seems an utter waste of his talents and it's not like he's going to be short of a bob or two.

Got no problem with Bale sticking there if he's happy to do so. Real screwed him over last season, he was willing to go to China and then Madrid pulled the plug on the deal at the last minute. I don't think he'll ever play for them again. They offered him the contract, so they've got to stick by it, fair play to Bale, just a shame we're missing out on seeing a world class player perform every week.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's still at Barca next year and this was all a ploy to clear out some of the top management at Barca now. I can't see any club taking the risk of having to pay his release clause if Barca somehow prove he's their player now rather than a free agent.

I might be wrong here, but Messi's dad might not be as good as his son.

Seems a bit sad to me, he probably has more money than he could ever spend and is sitting on a bench doing nothing.

Five years - a drop in the ocean in the overall history of these clubs. For example, why do you think Pogba joined Man Utd? Not for Europa League glory.
Pogba joined for the £300k a week I'd imagine.

Wait.... You're suggesting he joined United with the expectation of winning the CL..... rofl... That's brilliant!

Do you not think the CL was part of the wider discussion? If not and Woodward didn't sell the idea of lifting the trophy again then he's a moneygrabber and United have slipped much more than I thought.

That won't happen though.

If a club like man city comes along and offers say £200m, they can't turn it down, especially if Messi is genuine.

La Liga are now saying they won't de-register Messi unless his release clause is met. Can they do that? If someone offers a deal Barcelona are happy with then surely it's up to Barcelona? If they are forced to keep him unless the clause fee is met, they could potentially have him leave on a free transfer next year. Admittedly by then he's 34.

He's a great player but his best years are behind him. I think in another year or so I don't think he'd be any better than someone like De Bruyne.... Although I may get laughed at for saying that.

With Ronaldo gone, Messi is a massive TV and commercial draw for La Liga. Who is left to keep interest in their league if he goes? of course they are going to look at every way to stop him leaving.

confused

La Liga are saying they don't recognise his claim that he can leave on a free. So the release clause has to be met. Obviously Barca are free to accept a lesser amount...

I'm sure there will be reports of him signing for City or PSG or ?? and a deal's being agreed........and his terms met and.....

Then, right at the last minute, it will be announced he's staying at Barca.

This all comes across as messi's power play with Koeman and the board. Ultimately I suspect he'll be given reassurances about whatever it is that has him worried and it'll all go away.

Messi isn’t going anywhere in this transfer window.

All talk is just talk.
