Feel so privileged to have pretty much seen him play in every game since coming through at Barca (thanks to Sky and Ryanair!) along with the other players he's been teamed up with.
Quick question as I havent seen him play as much as you. Does he ever have an off day and get angry or frustrated? I always see him have a blinder and smile at everyone. Two things about the modern game that upset me are backchatting the ref and when a player scores they will push away their team mates like they want to punch them.
He has had the odd lash out but it is very out of character (god I sound like his mum or teacher) but even when hacked to bits by Real Madrid in every Clasico he seems to brush it off. Mostly I think he expects it anyway as it really is the only way to stop him sometimes.
Slightly related also if he has a mentor of sorts they probably realised long ago that his unwillingness to go down and roll around like a big baby is good PR. How many times do we hear what a wonderful individual he is for this very reason?
Oh and he earned €31m last year through wages and sponsorship

Not a pups chance in hell of him going down as the greatest of all time.
He must win a world cup to do that or at least get to the final.
Does that mean NO player from any of the weaker nations are "allowed" to have the greatest player of all time? It doesn't matter how good they are, they will never be the best? Really odd and, imo, silly argument. He must win a world cup to do that or at least get to the final.
Actually, could it not be argued that Cryuff, Pele, Zidane, Maradonna etc were VERY LUCKY in that they have the nationality of a competitive nation? What if Maradona/Pele/etc happened to be Scottish?

I know its a Messi thread but I have to mention Xavi whenever I talk about Barca - absolutely one of the best creative midfielders I have ever seen and a very humble person who stills lives with is family!
Iniesta too. Iniesta is on par with Xavi I think.I know its a Messi thread but I have to mention Xavi whenever I talk about Barca - absolutely one of the best creative midfielders I have ever seen and a very humble person who stills lives with is family!
2 more goals tonight. The team didn't play that well neither. 2-0 win is better than nothing tho. Can't see Real losing another game though.

Then they'd be getting mentioned alongside the likes of Baxter, Law, Johnstone and Dalglish.flatline84 said:

Paul Scholes is better, plus he's ginger.
Err no, Scholes cant even dribble past a single person, while Iniesta isnt far behind Messi in that area. Not even comparable.
Iniesta: “(Scholes and Giggs) are living legends. They have played a great number of games, have broken records, have won titles and furthermore they prove they in every game they are great professionals.”
Messi: “At La Masia (Barcelona’s Academy) his name was mentioned a lot. He’s a teacher.”
Pep Guardiola: “Out of everyone at Manchester United, I would pick out Scholes – he is the best midfielder of his generation. I would have loved to have played alongside him.”
I'd say pretty comparable. Of course there's no "better" player because they're all fantastic.

Haha, shows what you know about football.
If you go comparing them, thats a big difference, wouldnt you say?One can dribble, the other cant?
Aside from that scholes was a brilliant fotballer.
Anyway the thread is about Messi.
I stand by my post on first page back in Jan saying he is arguably the best player of all time. It's always going to go down to personal preference. But for me, I think he is.
World cups are irrelevant, Maradonna stood out (and was my no1 before messi) because it was an average team.
But you can't say George Best wasn't one of the greatest footballers ever because his national team did nothing. Nor can you say Zidane dragged an average team to win the WC (as earlier poster said) Look back at the WC winning France team, the whole team was superb, world class players in ever position (sometimes 2) just read the squad names and then say it was an average side?!
1) Messi
2) Marradonna
3) Pele
4) George Best
(not the best but my personal favourite...Cantona!)

Yeah that was me, just had a look at the France 98 squad and it is a lot better than I remembered. Anyway my point was that Maradona has no questions surrounding him, Messi has a slight one in that he can not replicate his form when he plays for an (above) average side (Argentina). Otherwise he would go straight to the top of my list, however I don't include players I haven't seen regularly so it goes -World cups are irrelevant, Maradonna stood out (and was my no1 before messi) because it was an average team.
