That is crazy-greedy from Messi.
Why?

He has a market value, which he naturally wants to take.

Barca have offered him a contract (presumably) in line with that market value. If they can't afford it, they shouldn't offer it and they certainly shouldn't off-load other players to accommodate it.

But it's not Messi's fault that they have offered it. He hasn't put a gun to their heads.

If you were doing your job contractually and your company said that they'd give you a new contract but they'd have to off-load other staff, would you offer to take less money or advise your company that perhaps they should re-think their finances whilst you look for another employer?

Exactly. Barca should just let him go as said. But also as said, they have had several years to plan for life after him and have frittered that time and money away on poor or over-priced players. €260m net spend in 4 years - which includes selling Neymar for €222m! €620m spent on the likes of Coutinho, Dembele, Malcolm, Lenglet, Griezman, De Jong & Pjanic and who know how much on wages and agents. This is why they are so desperate to keep Messi, they have totally screwed up any transition and are on a downward curve even with Messi.

Which makes me surprised that he’s probably going to stay with them … I thought for once he might fancy challenging himself somewhere else.

Headline this morning is that they cannot confirm the signings of Aguero, Depay and Garcia as they are still in breath of the wage limit for La Liga, that's without Messi's new contract

Shockingly run club

It's just their turn to put it all on red; they and Real Madrid seem to take turns to throw the financial rule book out of the window and neither ever seen to get anywhere near to being out to the sword.

The Spanish banks will never foreclose on them. But they will stop lending to them.

Have you got a link? Can't see it on the BBC page, even in the gossip section.

Cheers.

How on earth can they achieve that with signing Aguero, Depay, Garcia on free's and are still trying to keep Messi...!!?

No wonder they are trying to offload the likes of Grizeman & Coutiniho etc as well.

I'm astonished Messi wants to stay frankly, but I guess the club is his life comfort blanket, and despite what he says, he simply hasn't got the confidence to go elsewhere.

I don't think it's a question of confidence.

I think that, at this stage of his career, he doesn't particularly want to uproot his family to go to another country for what, a year or two? Then uproot again to go somewhere else.

I think in his mind, he either stays at Barca until retirement or stays there for another year or two before making the move to MLS for a few years.

In that case then, its a lifestyle choice, and he should be weighing that up against his wage demands, juts like people in the real world do.
I've taken a big salary hit in the past, the trade off being a dramatically reduced commute. Its part of life's balance. He seems to want his cake and eat it though....its not as if a couple of years contract extension on a reduced wage is going to make him poor and not be able to pay his mortgage....

Surely the truth is somewhere in the middle

Messi knows, especially on a free that he could go to PSG, City etc and get 350-400 a week

He says Barca need to match this and they agree

The fact they shouldn't have and couldn't really agree isn't his fault, its just astonishing that they are so fearful of him going that they'll risk upsetting the rest of the squad to achieve it

Usually I'd agree but the key difference here is that Barcelona aren't saying no.......

Messi is asking for (x) million, Barcelona are saying yes and trying to fund it by off-loading other players.

Messi doesn't have to take a salary hit, simply because Barca aren't rejecting his demands.....they (foolishly IMO) want to keep him and are doing whatever it takes to achieve that.

I read that article, but its not clear if the salary limit is based on a percentage of the clubs turnover?

350-400 would be a pretty significant pay cut... Messi’s last Barcelona contract was over €1M/week.

Scrub that, I miss read the article.

His contract was €551m over 4 years. €138m a year. >€2.5m a week.
