I rate Gerrard as highly as Scholes, it would be higher if he didn't keep trying to play hollywood fking passes.
You mean the kind of passes Scholes completes week, in week out?

Nobody, but nobody runs a game like Scholes has done (and still does).

Gerrard was a good player (I really don't think he's "all that" these days) but he's never been in Scholes league for running & controlling the game pretty much every time he plays.

Scholes is the best midfielder I've ever seen, you only have to read about the worlds best players saying he is the best to realise just how good he is. Ronaldo said in an interview he's number 1.

So...Scholesy > Hoddle as the former wouldn't have the arrogance to say what the latter said...

...that in my book makes him both a greater player and a greater man than Hoddle.

I really didn't think that it was possible for a United fan to have a grudge against Paul Scholes. Unless you are patriotic Digi. Well, are you?
The image is of endearment. Paul Scholes is the best English player of the past 50 years, since Bobby Charlton himself.

Oh stop it. biggrin
Better than Hoddle, Robson, Gasgoine? No.
I would even go as far to say Lampard is better than scholes, Paul ince certainly was too

laugh Dembele will be though, he is true quality, shame he's not english

True enough i do rate Lennon hidger than scholes, I prefer to see a flying winger beat defenders with trickery & pace than see a fella just kicking lumps out of anybody that is close to him.
Decent player, but to suggest he is the greatest English player for 50 years is just ridiculously ludicrous

Jimmy Lad even Hoddle himself thinks Scholes was the best:-

There isn’t a player of his mould anywhere in the world.
Glen Hoddle

In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen — the most complete — is Scholes. I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything. He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn’t give possession away. If he had been Spanish then maybe he would have been valued more.
Xavi

My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder.
Zinedine Zidane

Out of everyone at Manchester United, I would pick out Scholes – he is the best midfielder of his generation. I would have loved to have played alongside him.
Pep Guardiola

I tell anyone who asks me – Scholes is the best English player.
Laurent Blanc

He is the one whose level I aspire to. He is the best player in the Premier League.
Cesc Fabregas

Why isn’t he playing for England? It is crazy. Only in England. Scholes is a great, great player. So experienced and still, for me, one of the best in the world in midfield. Manchester United are lucky to have him.
Jose Mourinho

Paul Scholes would have been one of my first choices for putting together a great team – that goes to show how highly I have always rated him. He would have been one of the first players I’d have bought, given the chance.

Don't forget that Scholes is nearly 40 and is still just about the best English midfielder all be it that his legs cant last the 90mins these days.

Gerrard isnt as good as Robson was so thats him ruled out. Scholes doesnt grab games by the scruff of the neck, he runs games instead, he is the heart beat of the United team, and the only English player that can be said to be at the level of Iniesta and Xavi at his peak, something you cant say about Gerrard et al
Have you been drinking? What a load of old crock ... he was lucky to ply in some very good United midfields ... any game played at any pace now he doesn't get a look in, the ball passes him by - he was good (not tat good) but he was never great. And he should hang up the boots.

best of all time ffs ...

Classic comments from the WUMs and ABUs. For once I am in complete agreement with digikal.

For those trying to make out that Scholes age is making him "rubbish" can I point out that he's not always been old. Anyone who can play for the best part of 20 years in a United side must be pretty damn good to say the least.

Ronaldo is in awe of a lot of the things Scholes can do.

Gerrard is a class player but he's spent too long in a poor team. Any sort of quality can look good in an average team. Lampard has over achieved in a very good team. Neither are in the same class.

Maybe if Scholes was more of a Spice Boy he'd get more credit but instead of shagging his way through life or beating up club owners he's taken the family man route which shows true class as well.

I think it's daft to comparelahers from different eras, the game is far too different .what scholes had was the ability to dictate the tempo of a game ,something virtually no other English midfield player has managed ,Gerrard could lift his team with. Moments of inspiration much like Robson did ,but he could not for example slow the game down.
As far as England goes, crap managers made the mistake of listening to the press, instead of building the team around scholes they shunted him onto the wing to leave Gerard and lampard free to get in each others way.

Xavi, iniesta, blanc, Lippi, mourinho, Zidane, ferguson, alonso all think he is the best English player of his generation.

Meanwhile BCM favours the United reject Ince.

Let's leave it there

The game is all about opinions & if i had to pick an all time England XI over the past 50 years scholes wouldn't have been in mine

Guess i just like footballers with flair rather than the water carrier type players
