There was a good article in yesterday's Guardian about Jess Ennis.
She does a couple of events close to home and is obviously mobbed. Her trainer kept telling her she had to learn to "sign and walk, sign and walk"

Seems she's pretty grounded though and a tremendous experience for those who compete against her.

"Arsenal F.C. has its training ground on Bell Lane, London Colney, comprising a high-tech indoor training and fitness facility with outdoor football pitches. The training ground is also occasionally used by the England football squad, which regularly stay at the nearby The Grove Hotel during home matches at Wembley Stadium. Watford F.C. also train in London Colney on Arsenal F.C.'s old training ground which is situated next to their current one."

Frank Lampard a top bloke on signing autographs too. Met him and Christine at a cafe bar on the shores of Lake Como a couple of summers ago. Genuinely nice guy.

There is a premiership team training ground at the end of my road - sometimes they run around the estate in a group (I have often wondered how my insurance company would feel if they got a claim for a few million pounds of damaged players if I reversed out at the wrong time). The players all seem to be quite nice guys though; when there are fans hanging around the gates, they stop to give autographs and have their pictures taken. On Christmas day they had a meet up at the training ground (lots of overseas players, couldn't go home for one day when they had a game on boxing day I guess), I was out walking the dog with my youngest and one of them waved to her as he went past, which was nice.

I'm not a follower of football so much, so I don't know who it was - possibly Hugo Roddy-laker or something?

Thread hijack///

What is actually so great about an autograph anyway? I've never understood why people ask for them let alone collect them!

How is it any madder than collecting scale models or whatever example you want to give? Heck, at least collecting autographs you actually get to potentially meet a "hero".

  • No, i'm not an autograph aficionado, think I only have one on the cover of an album.

Except that you are not meeting a hero, just bothering a stranger who is sick of signing random bits of paper. It's utterly mad, as above.

Plus I can't see the Watford FC car park being banged out with top notch motors.......

I'd say it was Arsenal's car park.

Years ago, when the kids were small, we used to go to Centre Parcs at Elveden for our holidays.
One year, John Barnes was staying there with his family the same week as us and though he didn't get too much hassle from people, he always looked happy to sign autographs for the kids there.

You could also have guests for the day if you were staying and one day, JB's guests were Vinnie Jones and family.
I chatted with him (we were next to each other in the queue for one of the water slides) and he came across as one of the nicest people you could meet.
I saw them both having a kickabout with loads of kids later and seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Was at a wedding about 7/8 years ago and all of a sudden Allan 'Sniffer@ Clarke - Leeds striker from the 70s - walked in as a guest (evening do) ...

Rushed back home to get my 1972 FA Cup Centenary final programme (my dad took me - I was 10) - and he signed it for me ... top man!

(He scored the winner in the final as well for the young 'uns on here who have no idea who he is/was)!

Slightly off topic. Towards the end of last year i drove David Prowse around parts of the uk doing his book signing tour. I had a great time and i got loads of stuff signed making a few people\friends (star wars nuts) very very happy. He was great at signing bits and bobs for people, never too much trouble.
My 5yr old lad loved telling everyone that would listen that he had sat on darth vaders knee at his house, eating his biscuits.

I went to the Arsenal traning ground a few years ago as a guest of the Willow Foundation as a result of donating some money to them together with a few work colleagues. Met pretty much all the players and Wenger etc...the only one that had any attitude was Giles fking Grimadi.....all the others were very welcoming and happy to chat and sign anything anyone wanted signing.

One of the lads I work with is lifelong friend/best mate of one of the better know PL players.....whenever they're out he's always having to take photo's of people with said PL player....he claims to know how to take a photo in under 5 seconds with every phone on the market biggrin Having seen the way he gets mobbed at first hand I can believe it.

Not football, but cricket.

Years ago, when I was a kid, I saw Graham gooch at Centre Parc's.

It must heen in the late 80's when he was England captain etc

So you could imagine he should have been a role model to kids and was used to being approached.

He was there with his family and as a young kid, I was so starstrick when I saw him.

I went up to him and said hi. I didn't ask him for an autograph or anything but he was so bloody rude to me.

I wasa kid FFS!

i've met a few footballers when they've been on a night out - most have been friendly enough to shake your hand and acknowledge you and dont really cause much hassle or bother. ideally they just want to be left alone

which is more thank i can say when a few mondays ago (after city won the title) we had Ricky Hatton in the club. he's doing his usual thing and enjoying himself - the odd picture here and there and loads of people wanting to shake his hand.

but one fan was rather annoying him so he's told him to go away and leave him alone. needless to say the fan didnt and continued to harass him. reaching the end of his tether he grabbed the fan around the neck and shoved him away. at this point the promoter saw ricky pushing him away and got the fan to leave the premises. only a drunkard would want to annoy a drunk ricky..

aside from that I've met a few at the local hospital when my daughter has had to go in for her monthly check in around christmas time. they tend to spend the better half of the day talking to the kids or flirting with the nurses etc.

I'm in a position of working for a football team that I have supported for more than forty years now.

Only a League One team and of course none of the players I watched as a kid are still there now but the new players that come in have to deal with me regularly through my work. My two lads come to matches and events with me and they are a good cover to get signatures... hehe

I try to only get autographs of celebrities visiting the club and not the "normal players". In the last year, we had Matt Le Tissier and Paul Merson come to do after dinner speaking, both good though Matt was the friendlier and stayed longer.
