I'm with Twigthewonderkid on this (you're OK Twig, I got the all-clear from the STD clinic last week).
If you're a footballer, there are bigger and more prestigious prizes to win than the Olympic title (and the IOC can fk right off if they think otherwise).
Thus, in my humblest, sports such as football and tennis should not be part of the Olympics.
If being Olympic Champion is the pinnacle in any particular sport, then it rightly deserves to be an Olympic event.

In football the Olympic medal isn't the top prize, when if it's an Olympic event then it should be the top prize.
I'd imagine for the Welsh, Scottish and NI players, its a pretty big deal. Its unlikely Bale for example will ever get to play in any other worthwhile tournament. I think its also a good chance for some of the younger players coming through to show what they can do.
Sturridge should be playing.
Also, unlikey to be any other worthwhile footy on at that time of the year. Whilst i'm not going to any games, i'll be cheering England on...

I agree , imagine showing your grand children your Olympic gold medal ,Not many people could do this
Don't you think Olympic gold medals are devalued by handing the out to confetti to footballing has beens who are too old for the proper team or to promising youngsters who may or may not amount to anything. If I was Usain Bolt, I'd be quite fed up if I was showing off my Olympic gold when some footballer who was ok as a youngster but never really made the grade at international level wondered up and said "I've got one of those."

Because if no one took any interest they would have to drop the whole daft idea of Olympic football, which I think would be a good thing for the Olympics and a good thing for football.TwigtheWonderkid said:

Any Chelsea players qualify for Team GB!??
Not sure we've got anyone old enough or bad enough. I believe we've got some football games up in Glasgow too. Probably says a lot about our enthusiasm for the Olympic football that last I heard 3,000 tickets had been sold for it!
The IOC is absurdly, insanely political. Its all about countries back-scratching their buddies, getting on the international sports body gravy train, or making sure some competing sports body doesnt get a look-in.
Football shouldnt be an olympic sport and neither should tennis, or golf for the reasons mentioned by other posters (its not considered the elite tournament in either sport).
but it will be included because:
- football draws more TV viewers than the myriad of niche olympic sports.
- sponsors like having sports that people care about in the olympics.
- there are plenty of countries that will never produce a gold medal track star, but football gets them & their national sports bodies the chance to send 21 athletes to each olympics.
- it gives sports bodies votes, cash and prestige.

The only way to stop it is for football fans to turn their back on this fiasco. Don't go, don't watch. It makes me very sad that this is a minority view and then I get called a negative prick by some blinkered halfwit for questioning people's support of Olympic football.

Apparently the Olympic football is a big deal in other countries. For example, Messi really wanted to go last time and he needed special permission from Pep as it got in the way of Barca's pre-season (IIRC). Mata really wants to play for Spain this year (again, IIRC).
The reason why a load of people in the UK think it is a waste of time must be partly due to the fact we have not entered a team since 1960. I am looking forward to it. As it is mainly Under-23's we will hopefully get to watch some of the emerging talent, from all over! Not looking forward to it enough to part with my hard earned for tickets mind.
