The League 1 and 2 Thread

Well given we are favourites before kicking a ball and have replaced over 95% of last years team, this season is a mix of optimism and fear of banana skins. Evett has a great rep from his Barrow work and is making the right noises so far. Such a pity I probably won't be able to go to any of the dozen grounds I've not been to including 8 teams we never ever played in the league. Trips to the West Country and Far North would have been a laugh.
32 years since our only ever season in Div 4 and that started out with an ignominious 4-0 defeat at Scarborough. Probably a similar outcome against FGR today.....

Nice to see a couple of Ex-City players in action this evening with Ollie Watkins playing for Villa up against Ethan Ampadu playing for Sheffield United. Villa could also (if they were VERY brave) have had Ben Chrisene on the bench. But whilst it’s always nice to see your homegrown talent doing well if it wasn’t for the huge fees (and add ons) we got for them it’s highly likely we wouldn’t have a club to support.
Go Ollie, go Ethan.

Indeed Ant. You have always by far, had the very best academy and eye for young talent. But if that's what pays your bills, you need to be good at it.
Bit of a shaky start to the season for you, or as expected?
Bit of both really. Anyone who was out of contract last season was released after the Wembley game, which amounted to eight players and an awful lot of experience. They were replaced by three players and youngsters, however it’s two of our more experienced players who just aren’t doing it for me, and haven’t really for too long. Plus there was talk of Randell Williams leaving (he’s the one that did the back flip goal celebration after scoring against you in October), so there’s a lot of change since the Wembley debacle with them not quite settled down yet.Bit of a shaky start to the season for you, or as expected?
However, on the bright side, and hopefully a sign that our talent train hasn’t dried up just yet, we had five Academy graduates in the starting line up on Saturday and another two on the bench! But I think we’re in for a season as also rans, we just don’t seem to have the toughness, either mental or physical, to navigate the play-offs or automatics.
Pretty solid start for you though, despite the somewhat freakish scoreline at the weekend?
You know that we will score plenty and concede plenty, tis the Ryan way. His Bury was like that, got promoted simply by scoring more than the opposition. Risky strategy if you ask me, but one thing is for sure, it makes for nervous/exciting (delete as you see fit) watching.
Messed my bet up, which went like this..
Argyle 1-0 up - Yesssss! (bit early in the game, but ok)
Wombles 1-1 - Ahh, thought that would happen
Argyle 2-1 - Geddon! Bet back on.
Wombles 2-2 Bugger!
Wombles 3-2 Double bugger!
Wombles 4-2 Oh FFS!
Argyle 4-3 Hmmm
Argyle 4-4 Game On!
Shame it was behind closed doors, Loftus Road would have been a great away day.

So last week the U21s put four past West Brom in the EFL Cup and the U16s put seven past Crewe in the EFL floodlit cup. Not to be outdone the first team put six past Colchester last night - what the blimmin blue blazes is going on here?
Not scored six since a 6-4 win over Fulham 27 years ago (which, incredibly was the game either immediately before or immediately after a 6-4 defeat to Reading!).
This week, Oldham result as aside, is a good week.

So our chairman/owner has caused more than a few ripples by admitting that he has approached the local council and suggested they buy Huish Park and rent it back to the club with a buy back option.
Most fans realised early on that him and the guy "with the funding" didn't really have too much money but this has opened a lot of eyes to their potential plans for the club. Fans are currently split 50/50 with it; definitely a case of needing to see far more of the details before a judgement can be made. Trouble is, there is only just over a week before the council vote on whether to approve the deal or not.
The Supporters Trust, which has been pretty toothless in recent times, placed an ACV (Asset of Community Value) on the ground and its surround so in theory, if the owner wants to sell the ground, they should be given six months to raise the money to buy the club. However the current owner has stated that the club is losing £10,000 a week at the moment despite making several redundancies and there is a lot of unease over (a) all this happening and (b) the speed at which it's moving.

Have been working at games since the return from lockdown in July, mainly Championship but have also done League One, academy games and the FA Cup.
Atmosphere is just so bloody sterile with no fans there, it's horrible. I'm used to it at the youth games as they're usually only for scouts and agents who don't generally cheer anyway but football is badly missing the noisy support at the higher levels.

Managed one at Exeter. Everything good - staggered arrival times based on alphabetical order so no big queues, sanitiser on entry, allocated seating, then organised leaving at full time, row by row then block by block. We didn’t have anyone sat near us with plenty of spaces left. My only gripe, and it’s a petty one, is that we weren’t in our normal seats but four or five rows further forward which meant had it been raining we’d have got soaked.
Not sure how it works if you can’t go, I’m in a bubble with four or five others so we sit together so not sure what the club can do if one of us can’t go - by way of example one game was midweek and I had to be in at 7:00 but didn’t finish my shift until 7:00.
Anyway, I’m waffling so apologies. Not bothering with Boxing Day (never do) but hoping to manage a bunch in January and hoping we stay in Tier Two (and hoping it doesn’t rain too!).

Don’t think it would be allowed as I’m in a bubble with my family and we’re in allocated seats. I presume I’d have to tell the club I’m no longer in that bubble and would like different seats. As with Plymouth I think all the tickets - or all bar literally a handful - have been swallowed up by ST holders so there’s not much left over for anyone else.
Having said all that as I outlined in my previous post it does seem to work well and is very well organised. I certainly don’t think there are any issues with social distancing either going to and from the ground as well as being in in our seats, and as there are no refreshment kiosks open you can even take your own food and drink in with you (within reason!).

I was covering the Cheltenham Town v Newport County game tonight and the County keeper Tom Kingscored direct from a place kick, can't ever remember seeing it happen before!!
In 50 years of watching football, I've only seen 2 other keepers score - one from a penalty during a game & the other a bullet header from a corner. Was special seeing it live, mind, what a sight!!
