It is a great that he's given his salary to charity but let's be honest this move is more about Beckham plc than football. Given the new income tax laws in France the vast majority of his salary would have ended up in the tax man's hands anyway. He'll make more money out of endorsements in France than he ever would out of his wages and they'll be getting paid to his image rights company which I guarantee you won't be under French tax laws.

He also chose to announce the deal on "transfer deadline day" when there was absolutely no need to as he's a free agent . Having already gained maximum publicity training with Arsenal this week when the PSG deal would already have been done.

He's a very good footballer with a world class marketing machine. The day he moved to LA Galaxy he ceased being a footballer and more a marketing machine...you look at his peers that he grew up with at Man U...they have played at the absolute highest level they could for as long as they could. They're the ones really interested in football.

He loves football, you can't say he doesn't. He is the messiah, sent on a missionary mission to demonstrate to the stupid yanks that their gay version of rugby, rounders and netball with bouncing are fking st.

As far as I can see he only ever wanted to play for Manchester United and when that opportunity was no longer there he realised that he could make more money than he could ever dream of plying his trade elsewhere.

Pr stunt to give his wages away? Maybe. Did he have to? No.

Nothing would have been said had he kept them.

Probably one of the best crossers of the ball we have ever seen and seems like a pretty good guy all round. Not exactly an ugly guy either. Who wouldn't want to trade places with this guy? Apart from maybe having to bang that whiney bag of bones!

Fair play to him I reckon.

All quite true and fair play to him.

In the end, Beckham is one of the greatest footballers of our time. He has everything required to be a marketing wet dream and he brings in a lot of money because of it. He is also a top ambassador for football and is one of a very small group of successful footballers who has kept a reasonably clean image.

He has done a lot of work to promote football and is invloved in a fair amount of charity work.

He gets everything he deserves and I am glad he is English.

I would trade places with him tomorrow granted.

However, are you really naive enough to think that this "gesture" means hes actually losing money? From what I can gather he will clear £750k in wages during the five months after tax, now considering the world wide publicity him, and more importantly his brand is getting over it, don't you think its more a case of £750k well spent than £750k given away.

My argument is, if hes a genuinely nice guy that helps charities, fair play. But why does he feel the need to mention the fact he is giving his wages away literally hours after signing? This article is real charity, note the part where he refused to comment: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-11...

IMO its a publicity stunt for both DB and PSG, it just so happens the French Tax man and a local hospital will benefit from it.

His wages are 150k per week!! Not a month. So closer to 3.5 mil! In 5 months to a charity.

And people on here are slating him for it

The comment by Tuvra of clearing 750K in 5 months is I assume net, which is(roughly) right based on 150K a week with the French tax laws as they stand for high earners.

But surely by donating them to charity the wages wont be subject to those tax laws?

I might be wholly wrong there though

Either way I do find it remarkable that the guy didn't in any way have to do this, is well known for his charity work outside of this and still gets criticised.

Ridiculous. QPR will end up doing a Portsmouth.
No they won't rolleyes

QPR do not owe any banks money like Pompey did, the Mittals own 34% of QPR and they're worth £32 billion, they are spending much more behind the scenes.

Southampton spent £30m last summer, didn't hear any outcry about that.

Fulham, Reading and Cardiff (recently reported at £22m loss in the CHAMPIONSHIP) all spending far far more on players/salaries than income generated yet we're the only ones hung out by the press.

And if you believe that Samba is on 100k per week you're mistaken!

I'm assuming PSG will get tax relief for the donation, and Beckham will front up a product and make up the wages in royalties etc.No problem at all with with donating(who can seriously criticise it),but it's highly unlikely that the numbers would have stacked up for him to do the same over here.

Naive I am definitely not. His "gesture" as you put it is something he didn't have to do. Whether he is
losing money or not is irrelevant and if it has generated his brand some publicity so what? It is his money and as I have already mentioned he could have done and said nothing and no one would have batted an eye lid. I am pretty sure that with the wealth he has gained over the years that this isn't the only thing he has donated money to, in fact when he left Manchester United the kit man had fifty thousand dropped in his account anonymously 4 weeks after he left, it was found out from other sources that he had put it in because he was the guy that looked after him when he came up from London and he wanted to give something back.

Doesn't he give up his time to raise money for charity be it through events and also coach kids in his spare time?

I would have been more worried if we'd bought Remy, Samba, Crouch, Olsson and Odemwingie on long term deals, having Jenas (eek!) and Townsend on loan deals won't hurt their pockets too much, DJ Campbell went to Blackburn for a reported £2.5m of any real consequence going out.

Fernandes is a good businessman, let's hope this calculated risk pays off.

God I'm bricking it biggrin
