I think we're close to knowing our strongest XI, but the formation is still wildly up in the air.
It's obvious we have to play two up front. But then how do we do that and keep both Sterling and Coutinho on the pitch? If we play either Sterling or Coutinho on either side of a diamond then it leaves the side unbalanced and ultimately drops Gerrard to deep lying playmaker where he isn't effective defensively.
Be really radical and play them both as wingers? Yes, I know I'm old fashioned...It's obvious we have to play two up front. But then how do we do that and keep both Sterling and Coutinho on the pitch? One tactic is with two up front the midfield to attack the opposition is Gerrard, Hendo, Sterling and Cout - this would not work against the likes of Chelsea obviously - hopefully we get a few goals then put on Joe and Cann or whoever to shut up shop or take a striker off. It's obvious we have to play two up front. I got really pissed off on sunday that we are doing a Spurs when the recent example of how to fail when selling your best player was written on the wall in 10ft letters -they still haven't recovered. We all pay fortunes to watch them either live or on the tv it costs a lot and we should not have to put up with this inept crap.
I`ll be back to not caring tomorrow
Gerrard infront of the back 4.
Hendo right, coutinho number 10, sterling on the left.
Lambert and Balotelli infront of the midfield.
When defending Hendo has to drop back alongside Gerrard and one of the strikers takes it in turn to defend the wing and put pressure on the wing backs who are trying to bring it out.
Wish we would have brought in Song from Barcelona. He is looking good for West Ham.

I thought the same and I suspect this is what our strongest side and formation would be.
However that is (slightly) unbalanced, with Hendo on the right you've moved the engine of the midfield out of the middle, plus he's not that attack minded. Where as Sterling on the left is very attack minded but not massively defensive - though he often does well with tracking back.
Plus it doesn't get the best out of Gerrard.

I'm not sure what the best position is for Gerrard anymore
He might look better in his defensive midfield role when Sturridge is back, as we will give opposition a harder time so he might get more space to himself to bring it out of the defence and ping the ball like he does.
Right now with us having hardly any attack whoever we play are thinking we are fair game so can compete all over the field and not have to worry that we have a great attack who can score on the counter.

Top 4, get out of the Champs league group stages and go on a good cup run. That would make it a decent season having spent £120m in the summer.
My worry is our defence still looks poor from last season. We've lost our top scorer and the best player in the world of 2013/2014. Other teams are looking good this year too so there is more competition for 3rd and 4th specs. We are basically waiting for Sturridge, an injury prone player, to kick start our season.

I think Ronaldo with his 51 goals and Champs League winners medal might want a chat.

And improve our defence - Wonder Sturridge !!! he will have to score 2 or 3 a game whilst fit to ensure we win - Christ Im depressed today.
Cheer up, Its Ok we still have Mario I think being knocked out of the CL in the group stages could be the best thing to happen.
We can then concentrate on the league and qualifying for next season's CL and for BR to suss out his best team and how to rotate without messing things up.
I think Chelsea this season are us last season (sort of...), they have cracking first team but not much on the bench

Ronaldo is a better player than Suarez. Not many are, on last season's form - but when did Ronaldo last have a poor season? Suarez came good in his second season with us. He was good but not great before that. You might assume he will be great in Spain but he might fall on his arse, just like Torres did when he left us. Unlikely though...
Anyway, Ronaldo is better. So ner.
