I think what has got my back up is the fact that Roy stressed in one of his press conferences that he would be taking players on form, not on reputation.

Yet he then picks Wilshere and Sterling above Drinkwater and Townsend. Drinkwater has been an 8/10 performer all season in the Premier League champions team and Townsend has come into form just at the right time.

Poor from Hodgson.
Very poor. He's defaulted to the usual England Manager mindset at the very last minute.

Wilshire - you're kidding right?

Henderson - now you really are kidding.

Sturridge - hope you've packed the stretcher.

Barkley - below average season with below average Everton.

Milner - oh, dear.

Drinkwater - fantastic season feeding Vardy and commanding the midfield - nah, shalln't bother.

fking unbelievable.
Can't disagree with any of that.

I can see the thinking behind taking 3 CBs with Dier as cover, but who's going to do Dier's defensive midfield job if he has to drop into CB, or gets injured? Drinkwater has played there all season for the League champions.
Drinkwater had a steady game, and doesn't go.

Dier performed a diving header into his own net, got up, calmly walked away - and gets selected.

We should get past the Qtr Finals, and at least to the semi's if you look at other teams. Apart from France, Germany and Spain I dont see anyone else with much quality.
As I already mentioned:

BELGIUM !!!

Just like most in the ManU thread, you seem to have a lack of insight in the inherent quality's of all parties involved, both wenn it comes the ones that have, and the ones that don't.thumbup
To be honest i forgot about Belgium, but even though they have a good squad, they never seem to play well in Tournaments.

Interesting to hear Woy on the radio.

Drinkwater (or Townsend) didn't go because Rashford was selected. The other midfielders we've spoken about weren't even mentioned. They were always on the bus, regardless.

Same old.

Everything?

Anyhoo this is the first team everyone wants pretty much. Time to see how they go.

And then that's our best XI IMO

The one before the game that Dixon and Wright were talking about is pretty much exactly what was in my mind for the tournament. I hate seeing Vardy out of position, he's so much better starting centrally and making runs outwide than vice versa.

4-3-1-2
Hart
Clyne Smalling Cahill Rose
Henderson Dier Alli
Rooney
Kane Vardy
Just quoting myself from a few weeks back when I mentioned this system and lineup. Milner for Hendo is the only difference starting tonight from my team. If it does well I'll gloat thank you very much.

What does Milner do?

He either passes backwards, loses the ball or isn't fast enough to get to it in the first place.

He looks really uncomfortable given the rest of the team and the supposed need for fast play.

Why is Kane on Corners???

Also he and Vardy have offered very little together. If only we had some width???

And here we are again on the eve of a major tournament and we are still trying to shoe horn players into a system rather than pick players (even if not the big names) in their natural positions.

By playing Rooney at the tip of the diamond and playing that far forward you've now got Kane and Vardy who scored about 50 league goals between them playing as wingers tracking full backs and Alli sitting in a deeper role.

What a waste...again!

What's the chances of Alli getting through the tournament without getting a red card?

0%. He'll be gone. Speaking of which, to me that looked like a contrived and deliberate attempt to injury one of our key players just before the tournament. It was so ridiculous, I can't think of any way else to explain it.

Milner is truly woeful

I'd like to see Walker play right midfield & bring Clyne on.

Vardy really is no threat when not playing the Leicester way.

Precisely.

Roy needs to show some cohonas here and gamble a bit. Portugal are going with Nani up front alone and we have four defenders plus defensively minded Dier and Milner on the pitch. Milner has been woeful tonight so drag him off and go three at the back (Cahill, Dier and Smalling). Get Walker and Rose playing further forward and bring on someone a little more adventurous. Get Kane and Vardy in their proper positions.... with such an old creaky defence, it would have been perfect to put someone like Townsend on to terrorise their defence. But of course we can't....
